STRONG AS STEEL
When three perfectionists come together – all of whom have
a different idea of the end result in their pursuit – a constant
battle of wills inevitably ensues. But as with any close-knit
family, constant bickering comes to a head when someone
from the outside attempts to interfere, bringing them back
together to draw strength and resist collectively.
One such example cited in the biopic involves John Barry,
the long-time James Bond musical arranger, who branded the
band ‘Hitler Youth’ after a fraught experience collaborating on
15th 007 movie ‘The Living Daylights’.
Lars Horntveth, seen in the film battling to keep control as
arranger/producer during rehearsals for the highly-acclaimed
MTV Unplugged acoustic shows in 2017, had a similar effect in
galvanising the core trio, with Harket telling the band’s official
website at the time: “Lars deserves the credit for bringing the
band closer together than we have been for a very long time.”
However, Thomas Robsahm – who wrote the film and
co-directed with Aslaug Holm - found all three in a
lucid and obliging mood across the many interviews
conducted over several years. “They were really easy to
work with and accessible most of the time,” he states, before

Therein lies the rub; Robsahm originally intended for the

Having originally formed in Düsseldorf,
Germany in 1982, the group soon caught the

signed the band for their 1985 debut ‘A Secret Wish’.
The album showcased the band’s trailblazing

earning critical acclaim and fame that, in its wake,
led to cracks that broke up the band two years later.

FEELING FABULOUS
“After ‘Singing to Strangers’, it almost felt like a
curtain call,” says the musician on the origins of his
latest chart-topper. “I felt like it had taken my life up
until now - at least professionally - to make that kind
of record and to have the courage to really tap into
my Italian roots and actually go to Italy and make an
album. A lot of the musicians made fun of me, they
said, ‘This is an Italian album sung in English.’ And
that was the first time I really tried to be bold without
following some sort of a wave, I guess.”
Born in Westminster, Jack has an Italian father and
half-German, half-Polish mother, who raised him in
London before moving the family to the Swiss city
of Lugano. Produced by Cam Blackwood - who also
oversaw ‘Europiana’ - that project saw him relocate
to Rome, where he set about recording at Ennio
Morricone’s studio, and was met with critical and
commercial acclaim upon its release. But when it
came to working on the follow-up, however, things
couldn’t have been more different.
Although riding high on the success of ‘Singing
to Strangers’ and its subsequent tour, which saw
Jack play a headline show at London’s Wembley
Arena, his world was turned upside down when the
country was plunged into lockdown. “It was the end
of our movie - it felt like one of those Walt Disney
moments,” he recalls. “And then the world stopped.”
Faced with a period of downtime, Jack retreated to
his family home in Oxfordshire with his wife, actress
Jemma Powell, and their three children, and soon
after began tapping into his creativity as he looked to
the future. “I started writing and, I think like anybody,
I started on piano and guitar writing things about
isolation, fear and loneliness and went down that
rabbit hole,” he explains. “But very quickly, I realised
I didn’t want to really partake in that, and whenever
what was happening was over, I wasn’t going to
