SECTION B (20 MARKS)


3. You are provided with a thermometer, two test tubes, sodium hydroxide pellets,
ammonium sulphate, dilute hydrochloric acid solution, spatula and measuring cylinder.
a. Put 2 cm3 of hydrochloric acid into a test tube
b. Measure the temperature of the acid and record it as initial temperature in table 1
c. Drop 4 pellets of sodium hydroxide in the acid and record the changes taking place as
reaction occur
d. Record final temperature reached in table 1
e. In the second test tube, pour 2 cm3 of hydrochloric acid and record its temperature as
its initial temperature in table 1

f. Add spatula full ammonium sulphate to the acid, record the final temperature

reached and other changes taking place as the reaction proceeds

g. Draw energy level diagram for the reaction of hydrochloric acid and sodium

4. You are provided with 3 test tubes, distilled water, a test tube rack, copper sulphate
solution, Aluminium nitrate solution, iron sulphate solution, copper foil, Aluminium foil
and iron nail
a. Pour 2 cm3 of copper sulphate solution in each of the three test tubes.
b. Place a piece of copper foil, Aluminium foil and an iron nail in each test tube
c. Observe and record the results by indicating “reaction” or “no reaction” in the
appropriate spaces in Table 2
d. Rinse the test tubes using distilled water
e. Repeat steps (a) to (d) using Aluminium nitrate and iron sulphate solutions
