OPERATING PRECAUTIONS ON THIS FISHFINDER

Strictly observe the following precautions on the operations of this unit:

● The life of the fishfinder is determined by the hours of its operation. When not using this unit
even for only a brief time, turn off the power switch to let the unit rest.

● The use of the fishfinder at a high output level means that yourself also suffers noise
interference correspondingly. It is suggested that the output level be reduced using the
power reduction unit (PDC), instead of reducing the setting of the gain control provided on
the receiving amplifier.

● For a fishfinder that can emit frequencies of two cycles or more, it is advised that a
frequency be selected with the frequency selector to minimize any noise induced to the
fishfinder.

● Long outgoing pulses deteriorate range resolution on video. If your fishfinder has a pulse
selector, select a pulse width as short as possible.

● The use of the transducer at its wider angle of orientation reduces the ultrasonic emissive
power in the necessary direction because more noise is picked up and because fish location
detection accuracy decreases. If your fishfinder has a frequency selector, select a frequency
as high as possible and use the transducer at an angle-of-orientation as narrow as possible.

● Fishing areas are common property of all people engaged in fisheries. You should refrain
from emitting ultrasonic waves in the direction that other vessels are inconvenienced.
Horizontal fishfinders, in particular, should be operated so that they do not disturb the
fishfinders of other vessels.

intensity. Increase the gain level in deep areas, and reduce it in shallow areas.

VRM : Short for Variable Range Marker. Also, referred to as a cursor or a depth marker
movable across the display. The water depth where a school of fish is present can also
be detected by moving VRM in a vertical direction using keys.

Keel : Refers to the backbone of the vessel that is longitudinally connected from the bow to
the stern along the center of the vessel's bottom.

Cavitation : Refers to air bubbling in water, and affects the video level selected using the
transducer. Usually caused by the installation of the fishfinder at an incorrect angle or
position.

Bow : A nautical term meaning the head of the vessel.

Stern : A nautical term meaning the tail of the vessel.

Transducer : The component of the fishfinder that emits ultrasonic beams into the sea and receives
ultrasonic beam reflections from the bottom and/or schools of fish.

Defaults : Factory-preset values.

Master Reset : A function that clears the settings of the fishfinder to its defaults (factory-preset values).

Range : Refers to the depth range displayed on the screen. The specified range is displayed as
a depth scale on the screen.

1. UNIT OVERVIEW
1.1 Functions
The JFV-700HP color fishfinder detects schools of fish by emitting ultrasonic waves from the
accompanying transducer fixed to the bottom or side of the vessel, in the direction of the bottom, and
acquiring with the transducer the ultrasonic waves reflected from the schools of fish beneath the vessel.

Detected schools of fish are displayed in a color-coded format on the 10-inch color CRT monitor
according to the particular level of the wave reflections from the schools of fish. A partial expand display
mode (ZOOM), a sea bottom expand display mode (BTM. EXP.), and a mixed display mode (MIXED) are
available in addition to three standard display modes (low-frequency display, high-frequency display, and
low-frequency/high-frequency split display). An A-scope split display function is also available that
identifies the fish detection l evel by a color tone and a width. Furthermore, the JFV-700HP provides a
water temperature*1/water depth graph display function that displays a graph of changes in water
temperature*1/water depth, in overlapped form on the fish detection video.

*1: Water temperature display requires a water temperature sensor.

1.2 Features

This unit has the following features

High Brightness and High Resolution

• The 10-inch high-brightness color CRT monitor displays exquisite and clear video.
• Any color tone can be selected from four types each consisting of a 16-gradation-level signal color
pattern and a background color. A day/night selection function can be used for all types of color tones
in order to enable night operations.
• Since a user color setting function favorably accepted among the users of large-scale fishfinders is
provided, the desired color can be created and used according to the particular conditions of the fishing
area or the type of fish to be detected.

Easy Operations
• The operations panel has the minimum number of keys required, and uses independent controls for
gain adjustment, noise reduction, and debubbling each. High-resolution video adjustments can
therefore be performed according to conditions such as the sea zone, season, and fishing method.
• Various functions can be selected from readily understandable menus. Depending on the selected
fishing area or on the type of fish to be detected, the appropriate function can also be selected and
registered beforehand. In addition, even if a selected/registered function has been inadvertently
modified, its original status can be restored with a single key operation.

High Power 3kW transmitter brings strong echos

• 3kW high power transmitter is built-in 10-inch CRT compact body. High power transmitter ensures
wide-range search from shallow water to deep water.

A Wide Variety of Other Functions

• Simultaneous plotting
Even when the screen display mode is changed, video comparison is relatively easy since the previous
video is momentarily displayed.
• A-scope display
The A-scope split display mode for displaying the fish detection level by a color tone and a width, can
be displayed together with another display just by pressing the required key.
• Identification display (Mixed display mode)
A mixed display mode consisting of two different frequency display modes and one identification display
mode, is provided to allow easier identification of the types of fish.
• Water temperature/water depth graph display (with alarm)*1
A graph of changes in water temperature and water depth, can be displayed in overlapped form on the
fish detection video. Even when a graph is not displayed, water temperature/water depth data is
automatically stored into an internal memory. Therefore, there is no need to display a graph
continuously, and it can be displayed at any time when necessary, with a single key operation.

*1: Water temperature display requires a water temperature sensor.

Bottom discrimination display mode (see
Dual display in the bottom
operations panel control 8 on page 6, and bottom discrimination
discrimination mode
expansion on page 32)

In general, the tail width of the bottom echo changes as follows according to
the hardness of the bottom (BH is a bottom hardness level changing
according to the type of bottom material):
Type of bottom material Tail size BH
Rock Long 8

Gravel ↑
Sand ↑
Mud Short 1
Thus, changes in the hardness of the bottom can be identified from
changes in the tail width of the bottom echo.
In the bottom discrimination display mode, since echo of the bottom tail
is displayed directly below standard expanded bottom echo, changes in Mixed display
tail width can better be identified than with a conventional fishfinder.

MIXED display mode (see operations panel control 8 on

page 6)
Triple-display consisting of low-frequency/high-frequency dual display
and identification display modes is available in the MIXED display mode.
Identification display shows only signal levels that, although detectable in
high-frequency mode, cannot be detected in low-frequency mode.
Reflections that can be detected in both high-frequency and low-
frequency modes are displayed in white (this color can be changed using
the user color setting function).

A-scope dual display

Regardless of the settings of the dual-display mode (see page 29)
or the ZOOM display range (see page 30), mixed display shown at
right is always made.

A-scope dual display (see operations panel control 6 on

page 6)
The A-scope for representing the reflection level of the ultrasonic waves
from schools of fish by a color tone and width can be displayed in each
display mode, except for mixed display.

Graph display (see pages 15and 34)

A graph showing changes in water temperature and water depth, can be
displayed. Even when a graph is not displayed, water temperature/water
depth data is automatically stored into an internal memory. Existing
water temperatures and water depths can therefore be confirmed just by
displaying the corresponding graph only when necessary.
