The bar chart compares the proportion of Britons aged 25-34 who owned or rented a home between

2004 and 2014.

Overall, the percentage of people who own homes has been on a downward trend throughout these
years, while the percentage of renters has steadily increased far outstripping the percentage of
homeowners.

From 2004 to 2009, the percentage of homeowners differed markedly from the percentage of tenants.
The homeownership rate was close to 60% in 2004 and fell to 52% in 2009. Meanwhile, the percentage
of tenants increased slowly from 20% to 30%.

The aforementioned trend accelerated and resulted in a narrowing of the gap between landlords and
tenants between 2009 and 2011. The percentage of tenants jumped to 40% while tenants dropped to
42%. These numbers were unchanged in 2012.

At the end of the day, the percentage of tenants spiked to about 50% in 2014, while the percentage of
homeowners plummeted to 35%.
