TITLE

Coastal Protection and Conservation: Planting of Mangrove trees at Brgy. Libjo

Polillo, Quezon

INTRODUCTION

Mangroves are shrubs or small trees that grow along coastlines and in brackish
water, or water that is part salt and part fresh. In fact, these trees have adapted to grow
in low-oxygen soil, where saltwater intrudes several times a day and where slow-moving
water introduces fine sediment and particulates. They live where land and sea connect,
one of their most important ecosystem functions is to protect the former and serve as a
frontline defense for people and property along the coasts. There are many species of
mangrove, and the most famous are characterized by their tall, skinny, stilt-like roots,
called prop roots. These roots grow in a tangle that actually helps the trees withstand
the daily rise and fall of tides. These structures also cause sediments to settle out of the
water, falling at or near the roots. The roots build up the muddy bottom near the base of
the trees, which actually stabilizes the coastline by reducing erosion from storm surges,
currents, waves and tides. "NOAA".

Mangrove planting is one of the activities that has been undertaken to help in
promoting awareness of the ecosystem. It nurtures marine life by providing new
sanctuaries to fishes and other crustaceans. Planting mangroves can reduce shoreline
erosion and can protect coastal communities against coastal flooding, high winds and
waves, and tsunamis. Restoration of a mangrove ecosystem aims to support livelihood
without destroying the mangrove forest. Planting more of them could help restore the
health of the planet’s lands, seas and climate.

The goal of tree planting activity is to create public awareness about the need of
planting and saving trees from coastline, convey our concerns for the environment, and
mitigate the negative consequences of climate change. It can also help us to have a
strong bond with the environment to the procedure of transplanting tree seedlings,
usually for along tropical coastlines, purposes known as the tree-planting of mangroves.
Mangroves are important to people because they help stabilize coastline ecosystems
and prevent erosion. Mangroves also provide natural infrastructure and protection to
nearby populated areas by preventing erosion and absorbing storm surge impacts
during extreme weather events such as hurricanes.

Nowadays people say that planting trees are easy but it is one of the biggest lie
of our time planting trees is not simple, the only simple thing here to do is harvesting
trees without replanting. Deforestation is one of the most problem here in our Island,
even if it is in our coastline trees such as mangrove trees, our community is expanding
so people here tend to use trees to build houses, they are using trees but they are not
replanting some trees without knowing it can be harmful for the future generation, loss
of tress can cause climate change flooding, greenhouse gasses in our atmosphere,
erosion, without plant there is no life. So if I plant trees I can save our future
environment even though it’s not that big activity but I believe that little things are the
one that matters so make a move to change our future, give our future generation a
green clean environment.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The main purpose of tree planting of mangrove trees is to save our environment,
to have a clean green environment and to help to stabilize the coastline ecosystem and
prevent erosion at Polillo Quezon.

1. What will be the possible effects of planting mangrove trees?

2. What are the hindrances of planting mangrove trees?
3. What are the effects given to the people living along the coastline and to their
properties?

OBJECTIVES

1. Planting more mangrove trees for a better outcome.

2. Develop more on understanding of the importance of having mangrove trees
to our ecosystem and environment.
3. Dealing with such unexpected circumstances when it comes to planting.
4. Giving importance and time for our environment.
5. Strengthen biodiversity conservation and reduce degradation of the mangrove
ecosystem.
6. Ensure long-term sustainability of livelihoods for local communities living in
and around mangrove areas.

EXPECTED OUTPUT

The expected output or outcome of this project is to help our environment to

survive for our future generation, by replanting trees. It can be a great help for rebuilding
our nature. It provides an educational experience along the opportunity to do something
good for the local community in an open friendly environment. Mangroves provide a
habitat for fish, crabs, shellfish, birds, and reptiles. Mangroves also provide a natural
defense against storm surges, coastal erosion, and coastal flooding for the people who
live in coastal areas.
