INTRODUCTION TO LITERATURE

A. COURSE DESCRIPTION

This compulsory course which is prerequisite for Poetry, Prose, and Drama provides students
with the opportunity to examine the basic concepts and three principal genres of English
literature. To arrive at this objective, accordingly, discussion on content in context will not be the
main priority. The topics to address in this course cover the concept of Literature like: Literary
Appreciation, English Poetry, Drama, Prose, Comparative Literary and so on.

2. Goal
At the end of the course, students are able to: (a) gain some knowledge of literature, for
example the definition of literature, literary genres, the elements of novels and plays, etc;
(b) use this knowledge for joining the next courses such as Poetry, Drama, and Prose.

3. Description of Content
In order to provides chances for the students to develop their knowlege about literature,
types of literature (Poetry, Prose, and Drama). The topics to address in this course cover the
place of literature in English Department, the definitions of English literature, the function
and role of literature, liteary truth and genre, the problem of fictional and non-fictional
writing, serious and pop-literature, problems of the text, and the basic approaches to literary
interpretation.
