TEACHIN FEBRUARY 15, QUARTER 3 THIRD
G DATE 2023
AND TIME
I-OBJECTIVES
A. CONTENT The learners demonstrate an understanding of difference
STANDARD between speed and velocity that they can used in their
daily activities.
B. PERFORMANCE The learners should be able to calculate the speed that
STANDARD they had in their everyday activities.
C. LEARNING The learners should be able to:
COMPETENCIES Describe the motion of an object in terms of distance or
(LC CODE) displacement, speed or
velocity, and acceleration; (S6FE-IIIA-1)II
D. SPECIFIC At the end of the lesson, learners should be able to:
OBJECTIVES3 a. distinguish between speed and velocity quantities;
b. calculate speed and velocity; and,
c. give the importance of speed and velocity in the real
world

 Classroom Rules (including non verbal
rules)
ELICIT (5
mins) Let’s have a recap about our discussion yesterday.
1. What is distance?
2. What is displacement?
3. How is displacement different from distance?

B. ENGAGE (5 The teacher will ask the students the following

minutes) questions. Each question worth 5 points. This
will be given to the students who can answer the
questions.
Who runs fastest?
1. Bicycle vs. Motorcycle
2. Dog vs. Mouse
3. Cheetah vs. Lion
4. Snake vs. Turtle
5. A man that was running vs. Bicycle
The teacher will introduce the topic about Speed
and Velocity, and the objectives.

C EXPLORE Group Activity:

. (10 mins) Divide the class into three groups.

Group 1: Based on the given picture, what is

speed? (Consolidate ideas in all group members)

Group 2: Based on the given picture, what is

velocity? (Consolidate ideas in all group members)

Group 3: Based on the given picture, what is the

difference between speed and velocity?
(Consolidate ideas in all group members)

D EXPLAIN SPEED is a scalar quantity that refers to how fast

. (15 mins) an object is moving.
SPEED is the rate at which an object moves.
Depends on distance traveled and the time it takes
to travel that distance.
SPEED is defined as distance travelled divided by
the time of travel.

SPEED FORMULA

Distance
Speed =
Time

The unit of speed can be miles per hour

(mi/h), kilometers per hour (km/h) or meters
per seconds (m/s).

Example 1:
A car drives 100 meters in 5 seconds.

Given: distance= 100 meters

Time= 5 seconds
Solution:

d
s=
T

100 m
s=
(5 s )
s= 20 m/s

Example 2: You run 360 m in 60 seconds

d
s=
T

360 m
s=
( 60 s )
s= 6 m/s

VELOCITY is a vector quantity that refers to “the

rate at which an object changes its
position”.
Imagine a person moving rapidly one step forward
and one step back- always returning to the original
starting position. This might result in a zero
velocity. Because the person always returns to the
original position, the motion would never result in a
change in position. Since velocity is defined as the
rate at which the position changes.
VELOCITY the speed of an object in a particular
direction.
VELOCITY must always include a direction.
VELOCITY changes as speed or direction
changes.
Formula of Velocity

displacement
v=
time
d
v=
T

Example:
What is the runner’s average velocity if his position
changes from 15 m east to 40 m east during a
three second time interval?
Given:
Initial position: 15 m, E
Final position: 40 m, E
Time: 3 s

Formula:
d
v=
t

Displacement= 40 m-15 m
= 25 m
25
v=
3s

v= 8.33 m/s, East

E. ELABORAT Boardwork:
E (15)
1. A boy walks at a speed of 4 kmph. How
much time does he take to walk a distance
of 20 km?
Solution
Time = Distance / speed = 20/4 = 5 hours.
2. A cyclist covers a distance of 15 miles in 2
hours. Calculate his speed.
Solution
Speed = Distance/time = 15/2 = 7.5 miles per hour.
3. If a sprinter runs 100 m in 10 seconds, what
is his average velocity?
Solution
velocity=distance/time
v= 100m/10s
(Answer: 10 m/s)
F. EVALUATE Individual Activity
(10) Direction:

For 1 & 2, draw a star if the statement is

correct and circle if not.
__________1. Speed is a vector quantity that
refers to how fast an object is moving.
__________2. Velocity is the rate at which an
object changes its position.

True or False.
3. The quickly moving train to the west is
considered as having velocity.
4. The speedometer of the motorcycle is an
example of speed.

5. Alan travels 100km in 5hrs. Find his average

speed in km/h
answer choices
a. 5km/hr
b. 10km/hr
c. 50km/her
d. 20km/hr
