1. ….Music is as strange as it familiar. Questions about the familiar strangeness of music are as
old as philosophical inquiry itself. Philosophers and other theoretically-minded individuals
have wondered at music's storied ability to stir or express the deepest recesses of the inner
life of human beings. They have wondered whether and to what extent music is adequately
described as an object fit primarily for a certain sort of aesthetic or contemplative experience
and, if so, what the central features of that experience might be. They have wondered about
the various sub-practices of music, from musical composition and performance to music
appreciation and music criticism. They have wondered about the place of music in human
affairs generally, in connection with which they have sometimes sought to find connections
between music and the structure of the universe, music and religion, and music and the good
life. They have wondered at the peculiarity of a practice that seems at once so artificial, and
yet so utterly intimate and natural…
