ENERGY EFFICIENCY IN BUILDINGS
Energy conservation in the built environment has become one of the most important topics
on both political and scientific agendas. The rising global population, decreasing fossil-based
energy resources, rising emissions of harmful gases have emerged as the main motivators
for energy efficiency in buildings. In addition, cost efficiency, safety, and the need to reduce
carbon emissions are fundamental reasons for energy conservation. In the last century, the
incredible increase in the amount of energy usage and the increasing dependence on energy
resources have forced human beings to consume energy in the most efficient way in every
area. The world is dominated by buildings with about 40% energy consumption. For this
reason, the construction sector is affected by global energy issues, and the traces of these
effects are manifested in the design, construction, and usage processes of the buildings. In
this context, energy efficient design systems related to the production of the buildings that
draw so much of the world's energy consumption have been put forward. This paper
scrutinizes approaches to energy efficiency in the buildings of the last century.

Aim
• Introduce the concept and benefits of energy efficiency in buildings.
• Give an overview of the methodology used to determine the energy efficiency of buildings.
• Present the different opportunities and measures for reducing energy use in buildings
without sacrificing comfort levels.
• Describe the different mechanisms for financing energy efficiency measures in buildings.
• Give a summary of legislative and policy tools that have been successful in promoting energy
efficiency in buildings.

Objective
• The many benefits of energy efficiency include: Environmental: Increased efficiency
can lower greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and other pollutants, as well as decrease
water use. Economic: Improving energy efficiency can lower individual utility bills,
create jobs, and help stabilize electricity prices and volatility Enhance awareness of
the glorious military heritage of India instil and motivate citizens to greater devotion
and duty to the country.6. Inform about the challenges under which Armed Forces
operate to enhance comprehension and understanding of the Armed Forces.

• Establish itself as an outstanding landmark in the National Capital Region for Indian
and foreign visitors

Scope
Using energy more efficiently is one of the fastest, most cost-effective ways to save money,
reduce greenhouse gas emissions, create jobs, and meet growing energy demand.
PASSIVE DESIGN
'Passive design' is design that works with the local climate to maintain a comfortable
temperature in the home. Good passive design should reduce or eliminate the need for
additional heating or cooling depending on your location and often relies on an active
occupant to work properly.

Aim
The aim of passive design is to create buildings and environments that utilize natural
resources and conditions to maintain comfortable indoor temperatures and good
ventilation, without relying on mechanical systems such as air conditioning or heating. The
primary goals of passive design are to reduce energy consumption, minimize greenhouse
gas emissions, and promote sustainable living.

Objective
The main objective of passive design is to create comfortable, healthy, and energy-efficient
built environments by using natural resources and conditions to provide heating, cooling,
and ventilation. Passive design aims to minimize the reliance on mechanical systems such as
air conditioning and heating, which consume energy and contribute to greenhouse gas
emissions.

• Maximizing the use of natural light.

• Optimizing thermal comfort.
• Reducing energy consumption.
• Promoting sustainable living.
Overall, the objective of passive design is to create buildings that are comfortable, healthy,
energy-efficient, and sustainable, providing long-term benefits to building occupants,
owners, and the environment.

Scope
The study will only cover all types of buildings in composite climate. And it will only talk
about passive cooling and daylighting strategies. The strategies talked about in this study
will be especially suitable for Odisha (Naupada district).
