The assignments

Addenda A to E contain assignment instructions for Assignment 01 and the


Assignments 02 to 05. Please read the assignment instructions in this tutorial letter with
tutorial letter 101 for CSP 2601.

Assignment 01

NB: If you do not submit Assignment 01, you will forfeit the marks for the
assignment. There will be no other submission opportunities. Note that only the
instructions for this assignment are given here since the assignment questions will
be randomised per student when they are completed online. You must look for the
date on which the Assignment 01 submission system opens on myUnisa (two
weeks before the due date) and then complete the multiple-choice questions online.

This multiple-choice-question assignment will count towards your final mark. The purpose
of the assignment is to familiarise you with the content of the study guide for CSP2601 –
do not consult other sources since all the answers are in the study guide. You should work
independently (in other words, you should work on your own; do not compare your
answers with those of members of a study group or request assistance from a lecturer).

This assignment consists of 25 questions. Each question counts two marks. Complete the
assignment on myUnisa. Make sure the assignment is finalised and submitted on
myUnisa before the submission date since it will be marked by computer. No late
submissions are possible under any circumstances. Once the system has closed after the
due date for online submissions via myUnisa, you will not be able to submit your

assignment. Also note that the assignment cannot be resubmitted to improve your mark.
There is only one opportunity for the completion of the assignment online.

Each question contains two statements, as well as options, numbered A to D. Study the
applicable sections in the study material to determine whether the statements are correct
or incorrect. In each question, choose the correct option from the four options provided.

QUESTION 2 [25 marks]

2.1 Read the brief case study below and answer the questions that follow.

Ayanda is an 11-year-old boy who lives with his parents and two siblings. His
parents work long hours away from home to provide for their three children.
Nevertheless, they do their utmost to make time for all the children. They check
how the children are doing with their schoolwork daily. Ayanda’s aunt and uncle
live close by and they make sure that they know where the children are at all times
and actively monitor their homework. His parents also communicate often with
their teachers at school.

Ayanda and his siblings are fortunate that they attend a good suburban primary
school that offers dependable aftercare assistance. The teachers and school
management are very dedicated to their work and the children and community
they serve.

Ayanda enjoys going to school. He particularly enjoys Mathematics, as well as


taking part in after-school extramural activities. He interacts with his peers in
positive ways and he has a few close friends who are a good influence on him.
Sometimes he struggles with languages but he tries hard and seeks help from his
teachers when he finds something difficult. He even visits the school library to take
out extra books to read at home. His grandfather encourages this. His grandfather
tries to see him and his siblings a few times a week. Ayanda and his grandfather
have a very close relationship.

2.1.1 Refer to Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory. Provide a detailed


outline of the macro- and mesosystems in which Ayanda functions. (8)

Read the incorrect statements provided below. In each instance, argue why the
statement is incorrect. Each correct answer is worth two marks.

2.1 Read the brief case study below and answer the questions that follow.

Mrs Smith is a Grade 5 teacher at Cloverleaf Primary School. Sally, an 11-year-old


learner in her class, has appeared to be deeply unhappy and disengaged in class
for the last two months. Previously, Sally was enthusiastic, actively involved in all
lessons and enjoyed playing with her friends. She has stopped completing her
homework and refuses to participate in the extramural activities she used to thrive
in.

There is a school counsellor who works from a house on the same street as the
school. During break time one day, Mrs Smith takes matters into her own hands.
She asks Sally to go for a drive in her car so that they can chat. She drops Sally
off at the school counsellor down the road instead. The counsellor agrees to do an
assessment of Sally to set counselling goals so that they can meet weekly during
school hours for the next six weeks. Mrs Smith says that she will bring Sally to the
sessions every week.

2.1.1 Outline the ways in which Mrs Smith’s actions in taking Sally to see the
school counsellor breached the principles of ethical conduct. (7)

QUESTION 1 [10 marks]

Indicate whether the following statements are true or false. If a statement is false,
provide a reason why this is the case.

1.1 A public school may administer an admission test to a learner before the

1.2 If a learner is older than 14 years, he or she does not have to be
accompanied by a suitable adult when he or she attends a school disciplinary

QUESTION 3 [14 marks]

Read the brief case study below and answer the questions that follow.

A 14-year-old boy confides in you that he is lonely and unhappy at school and
does not know how to fix the situation. He joined the Grade 9 class from another
school at the beginning of the school year. Now, four months later, he seems
unable to settle into his new environment. His marks for the first test cycle are not
as good as his Grade 8 end-of-year results at his previous school and he is quite
anxious about this.

3.1 What is known about the problem that this learner is experiencing? (3)
