Case Title:

Swiggy Instamart

“Groceries in 10 minutes!”

In the past year, how many times have you heard this statement? Yes, that’s what

we thought.

Super-fast deliveries, especially for Groceries, have become such a strong trend

that we have come to expect “speed” when it comes to buying Grocery online. As

users, we rarely notice the other human force in this chain that makes super-fast

deliveries possible - delivery executives. Often, they have to brave the rush hour

traffic and compromise on their safety to deliver our packages faster.

Let’s understand what it means to have user empathy.

You are the PM for Swiggy* Instamart, working on improving delivery time for

Instamart orders. While you could optimise for total orders fulfilled or revenue, you

do not want to compromise the quality of life for delivery executives, especially

during rush-hours.

Step into the shoes of a delivery executive commuting in rush hour traffic to deliver

an order.

Think about the last time you ordered a fast-delivery item (grocery / food). If you

could ask the delivery executive three questions to understand their problems and

desires, what would you ask them?

Flipkart

It’s the year 2022. Flipkart is in peril. Net conversion on the e-commerce

marketplace has seen a 15% drop.

While there is no clear indicator on which demographic groups are causing this and

whether competition is hit, high level analysis suggests higher value purchases are

hit worse than others.

You are a PM at Flipkart.

Think about the different angles you will analyse this problem from. List top 5

hypotheses on what might have gone wrong along with supporting arguments?*

Based on your hypotheses, what questions would you want the internal dashboards

of the company to answer? *

Case Title:

Google Maps

Ever planned a trip?

No, don’t think about the trip itself, but the process of planning and executing it.

Unless you are one of those “spur of the moment” / “going with the flow” travellers,

you are remembering some hassles.

Google has decided to step up and make Google Maps the go-to place for trip

planning. You are the PM for Google Maps leading this. Build the end-to-end trip

planning experience for Google Maps.

Let’s get started!

While solving, answer the following questions:

Understand your users: What are the different user personas and their most

pressing problems?

Choose the user persona you feel you should solve for first. Who did you pick and

why?

Think about the user persona you picked in the previous question. How will you

solve trip planning for them?

How will you check if the solution (the one you gave in the previous question) is

working?

Case Title:

Instagram Reels

How many Reels did you watch this month?

Reels are Instagram’s popular offering to create and discover short entertaining

videos on the app. Reels can be shared with followers and with a public account,

they can be made available to the global Instagram community through a new

space in “Explore”, allowing anyone to become a creator on the platform.

Let's assume it is September 2020 and Instagram has just launched Reels for the

first time. You are the new PM for Reels.

Think about the goal for Reels. What will mark the success of Reels

What are the key metrics you will monitor to check the performance of Reels

Your engineering counterpart approaches you to check if there are any system-

level metrics you would like to track. How would you respond

You are planning to introduce a new feature using which users will be able to

share Reels with their friends via Direct Messages. What are the metrics you

would look at to confirm the following: The product is improving. There is no

negative impact to other offerings on Instagram. Explain all your metrics

mathematically and think about how they (and your targets) will change over

time.

Case Title:

CoWin

You have learnt about system design, and learnt about the various components,

data flows, that exist within a system. Ideally by now, all of you would be

vaccinated

For India, the official vaccine slot booking portal is called CoWIN* (which also has

its own app). If you have booked a slot using CoWIN in the past, you would

remember the user flow. Let’s try to go deeper into the system design of booking a

vaccine slot on the CoWIN app.

How does a vaccine slot get booked on the CoWIN App

Trace the step-by-step user journey to book a Vaccine Slot on the CoWIN App.

Identify the logical components that build that flow

What technical challenges will you face to implement these components

How will you solve those challenges? -

By changing the user flow / experience, OR

By changing the system design and technical implementation
