MODULE 1: QUADRATIC EQUATIONS & INEQUALITIES

LESSON 8:

Sum and Product of Roots of

Quadratic Equations

Given the quadratic equation ax2 + bx + c = 0, the sum and product of the roots r1 and
r2 can be obtained by:

Sum of the Roots Product of the Roots

b c
r1 + r2 = - r1  r2 =
a a

The quadratic equation with roots r1 and r2 can be obtained by:

x2 – (r1 + r2)x + (r1 ● r2) = 0

Example 1: Find the sum and product of the roots of the following quadratic
equations.
(a) x2 + 5x + 4 = 0 (c) 3x2 – 2x – 1 = 0
(b) x2 – 8x – 15 = 0

Solution: (a) x2 + 5x + 4 = 0 a = 1; b = 5; c = 4

Example 2: Give the quadratic equation given the roots in each of the following.
(a) 3 and -5 (c) and
(b) and (d) and

Solution: We have to solve for the sum and product first.

(a) 3 and -5
r1 + r2 = 3 + (-5) r1 ● r2 = (3)(-5)
= -2 = -15

Substituting we have,
x2 – (r1 + r2)x + (r1 ● r2) = 0
x2 + 2x – 15 = 0

Therefore, the quadratic equation whose roots are 3 and -5 is x2 + 2x – 15 = 0.

x2 – 3 = 0

The quadratic equation whose roots are 3 and  3 is x2 – 3 = 0.

x2 – 4x + 2 = 0

The quadratic equation whose roots are 2  2 and 2  2 is x2 – 4x + 2 = 0.
