Lesson 8 Sum and Product of Roots of Quadratic Equations
Lesson 8 Sum and Product of Roots of Quadratic Equations
LESSON 8:
Given the quadratic equation ax2 + bx + c = 0, the sum and product of the roots r1 and
r2 can be obtained by:
b c
r1 + r2 = - r1 r2 =
a a
Example 1: Find the sum and product of the roots of the following quadratic
equations.
(a) x2 + 5x + 4 = 0 (c) 3x2 – 2x – 1 = 0
(b) x2 – 8x – 15 = 0
Solution: (a) x2 + 5x + 4 = 0 a = 1; b = 5; c = 4

r1 r2 = 4 r1 + r2 = -5
Example 2: Give the quadratic equation given the roots in each of the following.
(a) 3 and -5 (c) and
(b) and (d) and
Substituting we have,
x2 – (r1 + r2)x + (r1 ● r2) = 0
x2 + 2x – 15 = 0
