EDITOR’S LETTER
Ten. Massive. Years. This October, Adore celebrates its
10th birthday. I know it’s a cliché but honestly, where
did the time go?!
I could not be more proud of where Adore started (as
Australia’s first online-only interiors magazine) and
what it has become: a fully-fledged print publication.
I still pinch myself when I see copies of Adore on
newsagent stands. Did I really get here?
Back when I was at university studying graphic
design, I had a keen interest in magazine layouts and
dreamed that one day I would get my foot in the
door of the publishing industry. I got a job at a small
Brisbane-based publishing company and, with a few
years of experience under my belt, decided to start
an online magazine focused on my other passion:
interiors. A friend of mine (who is now the editor of
Artichoke magazine – so much love to you Cassie!)
encouraged me to go for it, and I did. A couple of
years later, I left my job to concentrate on Adore full
time, and I’ve never looked back.
When I think about all of the opportunities this
magazine has given me over the years, I feel so
blessed that this is my job. It really is a dream come
true to curate and edit an interior design magazine
showcasing so many talented people, great
businesses and dreamy homes.

Fall in love with Adele Naidoo’s larger-
than-life florals in dusky pastels.

Having a father as an artist meant Adele Naidoo’s
life has always centred around art, teaching her to
appreciate beauty and colour from a young age.
Inspired by early memories of watching her father
create, as well as flower boutiques and other artists,
Adele has developed her own distinct style that’s
feminine and fun, featuring a calm palette with pops
of colour, rich, earthy tones, and organic shapes.
“Large-scale florals, thick, textured brushstrokes
dripping in paint on a subdued pastel or contrasting
dark, moody background is my signature style,” says
Adele.

“Some of my work I leave at the digital stage and get
these printed onto canvas,” says Adele.
“When I feel pieces need an extra element of texture,
I take them onto the painting stage. The digital art
is printed onto a canvas and I paint over the printed
canvas with acrylics.”

Transforming a tired, dark home near Warrnambool in
Victoria has involved opening it up to spectacular valley
views and letting light flood the space.

Casey Pearce and her electrician husband Jesse bought

the house in 2019 and set to work reimagining it. “We

Since buying their three-bedroom Brisbane house
in 2018, Róisín and Zac Tarrant have renovated it in
stages. They’ve saved up before completing each
section, transforming the downtrodden bungalow
into an inviting space that combines Scandinavian
sensibility with warm Mediterranean tones inspired
by their travels to Italy.

Although neither of them is trained in a trade, they
aren’t shy of DIY. “We watch YouTube tutorials and RENO TIP

Jasmin Watkins and her carpenter husband bought

their ’80s concrete block home sight unseen and are in
the midst of an 18-month-long project that will double
its size.

“Instagram has been the greatest tool for inspiration,”

says Jasmin, who describes their aesthetic as “informal
and inviting, with lots of natural elements, textures and
timbers, in a muted colour palette”.

To save money, the couple has lived in the home for

the duration of the reno (at the time of writing they’re
camped in their garage!) and they’ve completed most
of the backbreaking stuff like demolition, painting and
carpentry themselves.

They recommend living in the home prior to planning a

renovation, if possible. “Get to know the space: where
the morning sun hits; where the best breezes come
from; which areas work as is and which ones need a
major overhaul. This really helps with deciding where
to make the biggest investments to maximise the
improvement.”

FLUTED GLASS
Fluted glass is one of the hottest trends to
hit bathrooms and kitchens this year. In this
bathroom designed by Luke Fry Architecture
& Interior Design, it was used to enhance the
architecture of the building. “Fluted glass was
selected for use over clear glass to create a
textural layer in the space, which contrasts
against the terrazzo floors and marble
benchtops,” says Kate Monkhouse, interior
designer at Luke Fry. “Fluted glass also adds a
layer of privacy.”

And as for the feature ledge behind the tub, Jim
explains: “The house has an architectural look to it
and this wall is on an angle so I wanted to square
it up to the bathroom, which framed the bath,
broke up the wall, plus housed the bath spout”.

The ledge wall was tiled in the same tile as the

floor but in a longer rectangle profile, which
created a textural panelled detail to the space.

Smout Property wanted to create something different and bespoke
for this space, and sought out a textured profile for the drawer front
of the vanity. “We worked closely with our joiners and Scandinavian
Profiles to develop a fluted drawer front,” says co-owner and
designer Becky Smout of Smout Property.

“The profile is very tactile and works well with the vertical mosaic
wall tiles. The door fronts are made from a typical 16mm MDF board
laminated to a custom routed front, which is then 2 Pack painted in

A front entry can be decorated by simply adding a few

The Stables designer Catherine Heraghty says, “The

Catherine believes the most important feature of a

successful mudroom is storage. “I view mudrooms as a
stylish dumping ground as you enter the house,” she says.
“I like to have drawers for shoes, hooks for jackets, and hats
and consoles or shelves with trays for things like car keys.”

For the mudroom pictured on the opposite page,

Catherine installed a custom joinery unit under the
stairs to make use of underutilised space. “This space is
opposite the front door. My clients have three kids and
there was nowhere for them to store their shoes,” says
Catherine. “So now they have this fantastic unit and each
child has their own drawer for them to store their shoes.
It’s definitely functional and also a great space to walk
into as you enter this family home.”

An epic renovation took a dated ’60s brick home and turned

it into an enviable Byron-meets-Palm-Springs-style abode.

A lot of hard work went into this home to get the feeling
the Miller family–made up of Lucy, her husband Marcus,
children Sunny (seven) and Frenchy (five), and Banjo the
dog–wanted: one that was calming and serene.
When the couple bought the house at auction (well,
Lucy did as Marcus was on his Christmas work break up),
it was in a very bad way.
Lucy explains, “it was a 1960’s brick three-bedroom,
two-bathroom, set to the front of a great north-
facing block. It hadn’t been lived in for 15 years, and
you couldn’t even walk up the front stairs as they were
falling down. Plus, it had rotten window frames and a
bad ’80s colonial timber kitchen refurb. It was in need of
a lot of love, but we could tell it had so much potential,
and we love the location right near the Barwon River.”
The family took the option of a long settlement to get
the planning stages of the renovation and extension
underway, knowing exactly what they wanted to do for
the extension.
“We just needed someone to draw it up, so we went
with a draftsperson instead of an architect,” says Lucy.
“The engineering and waiting for approval is by far the
most tedious waiting period of the whole project.”
From purchasing the property through to planning and
building, the process took just under two years, the
build itself taking around 12 months.
“It all of course took so much longer than we
anticipated,” says Lucy. “The build started about
10 months after purchasing the house, with much
excitement, and then 12 months to complete once
everything began.”
Achieving the look they wanted for their home meant
incorporating into the design a lot of natural light, white
and timber, VJ panelling, and keeping the original raked
ceilings.
“We also love terrazzo tiles, so they feature a lot too,”
says Lucy. “Linen curtains give such a beautiful feel to a
room, so we opted for those in the main bedroom and
lounge.
“It’s a little bit mid-century Palm Springs, and a little
bit relaxed Byron Bay … a couple of our favourite vibes
mixed together.”

painted in Taubmans ‘Aniseed’, which instantly
transformed the old brick facade. A beautiful
custom timber pivot door from Pickering
Joinery and a simple black balustrade from
Ore Designs completes the look.

breeze blocks were sourced locally from Better
Bricks and Paving,” says Lucy. “We are obsessed
with them and they were part of the design
from day one. Our street is full of originals too,
so they fitted in perfectly.”

the house in size by adding a new main suite, a study
and second lounge room to create an L-shaped
configuration at the back,” says Lucy. “Because the
block slopes up, we needed to create split levels. I love
it and it works so well with the style of the house. We
also added another bedroom to turn the house into
a four-bedroom, three-bathroom family home. It’s a
lovely size now and we still have a great sized backyard.”

never thought I’d have a husband who would agree to it,” laughs
Lucy. “It’s such a beautiful shade of nude pink … not too strong.
It’s called ‘China Blush’.”

“You get so far into the process that it’s hard to go

back,” says Lucy. “And all the little things that add
a thousand dollars here and a thousand there, end
up being the details that you love the most about
the house, and make it worth it.”

Now that the project is finished, Lucy offers

the sage advice to would-be renovators that an
important thing to do is work on your ability to
make choices–and good ones–quickly.

“You can really get bogged down in the million

things that you have to decide on with renovating,
a bit like planning a wedding,” says Lucy. “But in
the end, you just have to trust your gut and make
a decision. I never wanted to be the one to hold
things up!”

Despite all of the beautiful spaces in the home,

Lucy says the original sunken lounge is the family’s
favourite room.

“We kept the original timber beams on the raked

ceiling, and the same large window plan, there is
the most amazing big tree right out the front, so
it’s very protected there even though it’s on the
street,” Lucy says.

“We are so thrilled with how the house has been

transformed–inside and out.”

Stylist Cath O’Donnell and her husband Marty began their
renovation journey four years ago. It’s been a long road for
the couple, who have three children: Jacob (7), Grace (5)
and Georgie (2).
“We started renovating four weeks into moving in and
are still going!” says Cath. “The house was very run-down
and outdated. The layout didn’t work; it was obvious
that rooms were tacked on and some spaces were
afterthoughts,” she explains. For example, accessing
the garage from the house involved walking through a
bedroom – not ideal!
They tackled the kitchen and dining room first. Dark,
cramped and dated (think green walls, red tiled floors
and timber cabinetry), the area was ripe for a complete
overhaul.
“We knew the key to making this space work was letting
natural light in,” says Cath. So, they knocked down the
wall between the kitchen and dining room and then set

to work on the windows. Fortunately, the couple owns a
commercial window company. “We took out the existing
sliding doors and replaced them with a set of bifolds, and
the kitchen window was replaced with a wall-to-wall gas
strut window.”
Their finished kitchen, with its glossy white cabinetry and
spherical timber pendants, is a space so light and serene
it seems set to float away. The zone is grounded by the
strong black lines of their new window frames and a bold
wall of dark panelling around the fridge.
Cath and Marty opted to gut the upstairs section of the
home and rework the layout to include an extra bedroom,
bathroom and living area.
The main bedroom was transformed into an upstairs living
room. “It was a large but dark space and had beautiful
ocean views. We thought it was such a waste to only have
views from our bedroom, so we knocked out all the walls,”
says Cath. It’s now her favourite room in the house; with
its stunning elevated outlook across the ocean, it catches
the afternoon light and is the perfect spot to watch
the sun go down. The old ensuite became the master
bedroom, with the addition of a deck to capitalise on
beach views.
The family’s love of coastal life has informed the home’s
styling. Its unfussy spaces are characterised by clean lines,
pale timbers and white surfaces, with gentle strokes of
blues, greys and pinks. >

a TV as the focal point in our living room, so it was
important to us to cover this up,” says Cath. “My husband
made sliding cavity doors covered in Porta timber
half-round dowels to cleverly hide the TV. This quickly
became one of my favourite features of our home.”

The bathrooms were designed for family functionality but are simultaneously
tranquil and luxurious, thanks to a double shower in the ensuite (“Space
permitted so we went for it!”), a freestanding bath and full-length window
in the downstairs bathroom, and floor-to-ceiling marble herringbone tiles
behind the children’s bath.

The tile selections in each bathroom add texture and depth, while black
fixtures keep the look clean and contemporary. “It’s always daunting
selecting your finishes,” Cath admits. She suggests using mood boards to
maintain aesthetic continuity when redesigning interiors.

And the secret to a successful reno? Planning and tenacity. “My advice to
anyone who is about to start renovating is to be organised. Make sure that
you budget and are willing to work hard and sacrifice your time,” she says.
“It’s a tough but really rewarding experience; looking back on everything that
you have achieved is so satisfying.”

It’s hard to imagine this holiday home on the New South
Wales south coast was once an “80s tiled beast”, but that’s
exactly how owner and interior designer Aimee McKechnie
describes its state when she and husband Blair bought it.
“It was in desperate need of renovation with doors,
windows, tapware and a fireplace that had all eroded from
the salt air,” says Aimee, who’s the founder and creative
director of Curated and Made Interiors.
“The entire house was tiled and so cold, the only exception
being the threadbare blue carpet in the bedrooms.”
Regardless, Aimee and Blair saw the home as something
they could transform into a special place to spend time
with family and friends; away from the city and never-
ending to-do lists.
Purchasing the property in March 2019 and with the self-
imposed deadline of Christmas the same year, they wasted
no time getting to work, spending most weekends at the
house sleeping on mattresses on the floor and sketching

out ideas before renovations began in June.
June and July were packed with demolition tasks as well
as reconfiguring rooms like the laundry to include a mud
room. In the same period, all of the windows and doors
were replaced with low-e glass for increased insulation.
Next up was demolishing and replacing the boundary
fence as well as putting in plumbing and electrical
services, which kept them busy through August. Once
the walls were plastered up, the bathrooms, kitchen
and laundry were tiled, the engineered oak flooring was
installed, plumbing and electricals were fitted off, painting
commenced and joinery was installed.
Nearing their deadline, in November the downstairs
deck area was built and the upstairs balcony was rebuilt
(after discovering it was rotted out). In December they
completed the pool and balcony balustrading and outside
tiling, as well as having the bulk of the furniture delivered.
Not one to miss a deadline, Aimee says the extensive
renovations, bar the landscaping and “handyman”
jobs such as hanging art and installing shelving, were
completed a few days before Christmas.
“In all of my projects I’m quite passionate about
showcasing Australian artists and craftspeople, so a lot of
the furniture and art was sourced locally,” says Aimee. “I
combined these pieces with wall hangings and ceramics
from Morocco as well as a selection of beautiful tiles
throughout the house to add interest and warmth.” >

Looking back on the project, Aimee says one of the
biggest challenges was the timeframe: “Six months
to re-build a large home when you live two hours’
drive away, both work and have two kids means we
were pushed to our absolute limit”.

But, her best advice to would-be renovators is to

communicate with and be a step ahead of your
tradespeople.

“Don’t ever wait for your builder or tradesperson

to come to you and say they need the spec for
something,” Aimee says. “When you start the project
and engage the trades you should have a really clear
understanding of the items you’ll be specifying.

“All our fixtures, fittings, tiles, flooring, lighting,

etcetera were chosen way back in May and June to
allow for lead times and delivery delays.”

As well as being the McKechnie family’s go-to coastal

getaway spot, The Shore is available to rent for

Melbourne-based Jenny Vizard shares how

function, flair and heritage flavour converted
her rental cottage into the purrfect abode for
her and her beloved cat Dot.

Behind the heritage front façade lies the newly
renovated addition. “The circular window
awning at the back adds an irregularity to the
contemporary interpretation of the heritage
place, creating a point of interest, but most
importantly providing a porthole out to the
world for the ‘Queen of the Castle’: the cat,
Dot,” says architect Ton.
Jenny Vizard bought a single-storey Victorian
heritage terrace home in North Fitzroy in the late
1980s to be used as a rental property. The two-
bedroom, one-bathroom cottage provided years
of fond memories for the librarian, who’d painted,
gardened and maintained it with her family over a
30-year span.
So when Jenny’s own home sold in 2017, the stars
had long been aligned to transform her beloved
investment into the purrfect abode for herself and
her cherished cat Dot.
“I wanted a home that was understated, welcoming
and functional,” Jenny recalls. “The cottage could
be adapted to provide me with what I needed–a
bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, living room, and spare
room for guests … and of course, room for Dot.”
Indeed, her cat’s happiness was paramount when
Jenny decided to renovate. After all, Dot spent the
most time at home, an environment where Jenny felt
she should feel secure and happy. This would include
distinct areas for eating, toileting, play and relaxation.
Beyond these ambitions, Jenny desired plentiful
storage for her treasured books and other items,
along with soft, filtered light and optimal task
lighting in the kitchen. She adds, “I didn’t want a
bath tub or spa; just a lovely walk-in shower. Nor did
I want a kitchen bench with stools–having no desire
to eat whilst perched on a stool–rather, a space for
a dining room table and chairs.”
Jenny enlisted the help of Melbourne-based Atlas
Architects, who would team with local Resicon
Master Builders to revamp her cottage in two years.
First, they would contend with the home’s
structural challenges: extensive wall cracking,
internally and externally, laundry facilities in an
outdoor shed, and the home’s long, narrow site
with party walls on both sides, inhibiting natural
light from coming in. Because of these issues, most
of the house beyond the heritage-protected façade
required demolition and rebuilding.
“Atlas felt it was important to create a harmonious
dialogue between the new build and existing
fabrics,” Jenny explains. “They achieved the concept
of ‘the frame’–using the new to frame the old, and
the old to inform the new.” >

“The existing roof line informed the rear façade, the
ceiling line, and the north awning. The window shapes
would act as the different perspectives framing the
outside context. The existing brickwork and hard plaster
texture of the original cottage were exposed along
the hallway. The new joinery, wall niches and light
fittings over the kitchen bench provide a more literal
interpretation of this concept, as they ‘frame’ my history–
highlighting my ornaments and books.”

Complemented by a subtle colour palette of light timber,

white walls and clean black lines, the open shelving
underscores Jenny’s story while doubling as a storage
solution with the concealed cabinetry throughout.

“Shelves, with appropriate reinforcement, were also fixed

to the north wall of the house, acting as a ladder for Dot
to access the round window–her porthole to the outside
world,” adds Jenny.

Also integrating the outdoors was the addition of

skylights and large bi-fold doors, providing the quality
lighting Jenny yearned for.

Meanwhile, the unified laundry is kitty-centric, offering

a separate sink for Dot’s dishes plus private eating and
toileting spaces–cleverly accessible via cat flaps under
Jenny’s desk. Flaps were also installed in the master
bedroom and at the back of the house, allowing Dot entry
into the two small yards.

And with the stylish kitchen, dining area and walk-in

shower worth showing off, Jenny is beside herself with
love for her new home.

“I pinch myself every day. Dot enjoys it too … she is happy,

healthy and relaxed. A princess in her own domain.”

The owners of this garden in Sydney’s beachside
suburb of Coogee enlisted Stone Lotus Landscapes to
upgrade their garden space.
“It was unkempt and uninviting, with outdated
finishes,” recalls Jessica Cheng of Stone Lotus.
“There was a turfed area and a few random plants
haphazardly planted along the boundaries.”
“Our clients were after a robust, fairly low-
maintenance space to entertain friends and family. As
camping enthusiasts, a fire pit or fireplace was flagged
as a necessary inclusion from the get-go.”
The owners described the look they were after as
‘Australian Cottage’, which the Stone Lotus team
interpreted as “a relaxed, multi-layered, free-flowing
garden – without some of the maintenance required of
a flowering or fruit-bearing cottage garden.”
Rather than starting from scratch, they worked within
the original layout (which included a paved entertaining
area, a pathway and a shower) and took inspiration from
the home’s style and its coastal location. The project
took 12 weeks and cost around $60k.
“The exterior facade of the home had been painted in a
beautiful warm taupe colour called ‘Wet Cement’ from
Porter’s Paints. This was combined with a somewhat
unexpected dark-blue accent colour for trims and
gutters, and the window frames and bifold doors are
in white,” Jessica explains. “So, it was working against
this backdrop that we specified materials and finishes
to complement the home.”

Grey ‘Garonne’ limestone pavers from Eco Outdoor
were laid in a French pattern; hardwood was used for
privacy screening and the shower façade; and crushed
granite was added in the garden.
A bespoke bench seat–undeniably the hero of the
space – curves around the fire pit and appears to float
among the plants. The rounded lines of these fixtures
work alongside the feathery textures and mounded
shapes of plantings to soften the garden’s geometric
elements.
Plants were selected to suit the sandy growing
conditions. Some were chosen to screen off
neighbouring properties, while others create a slightly
overgrown feel that recalls traditional cottage garden
plantings.
The chosen foliage adds colour to complement the
home’s exterior palette. “The soft grey-blues and
greens are reminiscent of lavender often found
in cottage gardens,” Jessica points out. Even the
boundary fence, painted in Dulux ‘Monument’, tends to
throw silvery-blue light when sunlit.
Such carefully considered design appears effortless in
the finished space, in which the interplay of texture, hue
and shape creates an organic and calming ambience. All
that’s left to do is light the fire and invite friends over –
or lounge quietly in the sun with a good book.
