something which can be verified with
evidences and is provable, observable and
measurable. Those are statements that can be
proven by reliable authority or information
such as based on statistics, scientific laws,
history books and others.
For example, Ferdinand Marcos is the
former president of the Philippines.
Why do you think it is fact?
Very good! This statement is a fact
because it is provable by history.
On the other hand, opinion is
something which can’t be proven, and they
are based on someone’s thoughts, feelings and
understanding. There are statements that can
be confusing especially if it is widely
accepted.
For example, President Duterte is the
best president.

Even if everyone agreed with this
statement, it is still an opinion. Because it is
not provable. Well, an opinion is not
necessarily wrong, it is merely not a provable
fact.

Okay, based on the first sentences in
the board, what is the adjective that we used?
Correct! The adjective in the sentence
1 is large. And this sentences shows a positive
degree of adjective. A positive degree of
comparison is the basic form of a descriptive
adjective. When you use this, no comparison
is being made.
But when you compare the
hippopotamus to something else? Is it
possible?
Yes it is possible. It is just like the
number 2 sentence. We compare
hippopotamus to pig and we use the adjective
larger. This sentences shows a comparative
degree of adjective. A comparative degree of
comparison is used when comparing two
nouns. You either add the “-r” or “-er”
suffixes to the positive degree if it is regular
adjective and at least 2 syllables only or add
“more” or “less” before the positive degree if
it has 3 or more syllables.

from the text that, when combined with prior
knowledge, allow you to decide the meaning
of unknown words in the story or article you

There are several different types
of context clues that are commonly used by authors:
1. Definition context clue- the meaning
of the word is stated in the sentence.
