2. PREPARATION
1) All materials to be used for this work shall meet the drawings and/ or specific job
requirements. Catalogs and/ or samples of the materials shall be submitted to
Contractor and Owner for approval prior to commencement of the work.
2) Prepare the execution plan including all related man power and equipment to be
provided, schedule, and working drawing for following works.
3) Provide mix design concrete and conduct trial mix for all required grades of concrete

3. SETTING-OUT
To get the precise position of the drainage the following items shall be carried out.
1) Set the alignment of centerline of drain by Subcontractor License Surveyor,
refer to reference drawings.
2) Establish marking at the edge of intended drain line for indicating depth of
excavation as per reference drawings.

4. EXCAVATION & COMPACTION WORK

In order to get properly earth work execution the following activities are required:
1) Excavate existing soil to get intended elevation of drainage using backhoe
loader and manual labor.
2) Soft soil, obstacles and other unsuitable material that encountered in the sub-
grade shall be removed and replaced with suitable material as approved by Contractor.
Compaction of replacement materials shall be as specified in Construction
Specifications for Earthworks.
3) Once the formation level is achieved, the bed of excavation shall be compacted
immediately.
4) The slope and shape of excavation of the drainage shall be such to minimize
erosion and sedimentation.
5) All excavations shall be provided with stable side slopes to minimize slope
collapse and to ensure safety at all times.
6) Part of excavated soil to be dumped offsite and the remaining quantity to be
used as backfilling materials. Excavated material must be stacked at least 1.2 m clear
of edge of trench.

7) Provide a red safety tape surrounding excavation pits as safety measure. Hard
barricades shall be provided where necessary.

5. LEVELING CONCRETE & SAND BEDDING

The following activities shall be performed:
1) The intended level of bottom of excavation to be checked and hand compacted prior to
laying of concrete for pipe culvert and prior to laying of sand for manhole or precast U-
ditch/ box culvert.
2) Inspect level and depth of the excavation by Subcontractor’s QC, withnesses by
Contractor’s QC.
3) Install sufficient wood at boundary of leveling concrete or sand bedding if necessary.
4) Apply and compact sand bedding for manhole and RC pipe culvert.
5) For pipe culvert installation, in accordance with paragraph 4.2.2.3 of Construction
Specification for Sewer and Drainage, bedding shall consist of grade 20/ 20 concrete
reinforced with a layer of wire mesh no. A8, unless specified otherwise on the drawings.
6) For manhole, a layer of 50mm thick of sand shall be used for as pipe bedding, as
shown on the drawings.
7) The sand bedding must be compacted using approved compactor. Inspect the bedding
before lying of drain.
8) Check level, thickness and compaction of sand bedding by Subcontractor’s QC and
Contractor’s QC.
9) Pouring ready-mix concrete for leveling concrete. Leveling concrete is applied for U-
ditch, manhole , road crossing culvert and where specified.
10) Compact and level the concrete using manual tools.
11) Check level and thickness compaction of lean concrete by Subcontractor’s QC and
Contractor’s QC before laying of precast drain or manhole.

6. INSTALLATION OF PRECAST U-DRAIN

1) Make sure the drain to be used is of the approved type and manufactures and check
size and dimension of material by Subcontractor QC and Contractor QC.
2) Ensure that Inspection Release of sand bedding is achieved.
3) Mark center line of drain using peg and string.
4) Lay the drain from higher end to lower end.
5) Check the invert level of the drain and record it section by section by Subcontractor QC/
Surveyor witnessed by Contractor QC. The tolerance for invert level is+10mm
6) All joints between the pre-cast units shall be filled with 1:3 cement mortars.
7) Joint inspection for drainable slope of drainage partially between Subcontractor’s QC
and Contractor’s QC.

7. INSTALLATION OF PIPE CULVERT

1) Make sure the drain to be used is the approved type and manufacturer and
check size and dimension of material by Subcontractor QC and Contractor QC
2) Pipe culvert for road crossing normally installed is of spigot and socket type
unless specified otherwise.
3) Make sure that bedding has been accepted including its elevation prior to
installation.
4) Pegging area of drainage to guide centerline, elevation, and left-right border as
necessary.

5) Provide a recess on the bedding material to accommodate the socket. The width
of the recess of the socket by more than 50 mm.
6) Pipes shall be laid in upstream direction with the socket towards the inlet.
7) Check the alignment of pipe or drainage section by section, partially, by
Subcontractor QC and witnessed by Contractor QC.
8) Prior to jointing, rubber rings and jointing surfaces shall be cleaned of all
contaminants.
9) Rubber ring joints shall be installed strictly in accordance with the manufacturer’s
instruction.
10) The care must be taken to ensure the rubber ring is adequately compressed to
seal the joint.
11) Inspect joints by Subcontractor QC or Supervisor and witnessed by Contractor
QC.
12) After all pipes for certain section of road crossing is completely installed, the
survey on the intended invert level of the pipes to be checked and must be within the
tolerance given in the specification before the backfilling can be started.
13) Joint inspection for drainable slope of drainage between Subcontractor’s QC and
Contractor’s QC.
14) Subcontractor shall submit details of proposed methods and program for testing,
including details of test equipment, for Contractor’s approval and shall arrange for all
test to be witnessed by Contractor.

materials.
2) Use approved compactor to compact the backfilling material.
3) For pipe culvert on road crossing, sand to be used as backfilling material until
150mm (or as specified) above pipe top level, then suitable materials from the original
ground to be used to complete the backfilling.
