The Medford Sun

About 20 years ago, this article
never would have existed, but
today its a necessity. School is
just around the corner, and stu-
dents and parents alike will be
flocking to different school dis-
trict websites to see their class
lists, download permission forms,
physical forms, and even track
their grades.
Parents and students can visit
the Medford Township Public
School website
(www.medford.k12.nj.us) and the
Shawnee High School website
(www.lrhsd.org) for information
on the district and all of the ele-
mentary and middle schools.
The welcoming screen of the
K-8 website introduces visitors to
the district and provides a news
and information screen that is
updated with new data and
changes within the district. Gen-
eral school information, which
can be found on the left side of
the website, allows parents and
students to access the yearly
school calendar, administration
and BOE sites, and individual
school sites for the seven schools
in the district.
At this front page, parents can
find up to date information about
school closings a linked tab is on
the left of the screen and yearly
lunch menus for all seven schools.
Copies of The Bridge, the publi-
cation for the district, can also be
downloaded and can be found on
the welcome screen.
Parents can also sign up for an
account with the Genesis Parent
Access program, which can be
found at the very top of the wel-
come page. The access program

The vote on the 2011 township
budget has been postponed to
Sept. 6.
The reason?
Bids for the townships cell
towers were what Township Man-
ager Christopher Schultz called
unresponsive, and so the coun-
cil had to rebid.
Schultz is hoping the cell tow-
ers sale will bring in another $1.2
million to a budget that has al-
ready been cut drastically.
We cannot adopt until a suc-
cessful bid is awarded, Schultz
said.
In the spring, the budget refer-
endum put forward to the public
was voted down.
That would have gone about
$2.4 million above the 2 percent
tax cap.
The latest proposal is a $21.9
million budget, around $350,000
more than last years.
Under that proposal, the aver-
age homeowner would contribute
around $1,046 to municipal taxes,
up $47.90 from last year.
The town has a fiscal dilem-
ma, Schultz said. We need to fig-
ure a way to get out of it.
As many as 30 township em-
ployees will lose their jobs if this
amended budget is approved.
Schultz also said that services
such as trash, leaves and brush
pickup may be suspended and
there could be additional person-
nel cuts.
The township has already
stopped curbside bulk trash and
Saturday drop-off, as well as per-
sonnel cuts in various depart-
ments.
And what about next year?
We will be in a similar posi-
tion as we are now or possibly a
bit worse unless we can reduce
expenses and raise additional rev-
enues, Schultz said.
Resident Randy Pace said he
understands why council tabled
the budget vote because of the
cell towers situation.
We need to do whats best for
the township, he said. Its un-
fortunate that were having to sell
assets to meet a budget deficit but
the reality is thats where were
at.
Pace said the 2011 budget
should have been worked on earli-

er in the year.
I think weve pushed it so far
down the road that any changes
or any significant gains are lost
simply because were so late in
the year, he said.
Pace alleged that council has
been aware of the financial situa-
tion but has been unwilling to act.
They knew in February what
the requirements were should the
referendum fail, he said.
It failed [and] I dont believe
they were prepared and thats
why were standing here pushing
the budget to September.
Schultz started as township
manager after the budget process
was underway. Because of that,
he said he cant comment on what
was done or not done during the
budget process.
Since I came on board, I have
looked at the budget to find a way
to keep services intact for the bal-
ance of the year, he said.
Although I would prefer the
stability of the annual cell tower
revenue, I have an obligation to
provide council with their op-
tions.
So where does the township go
from here?
There may be services cur-
tailed or provided in different for-
mats moving forward, Schultz
said.
We need to develop a sustain-
able course of action which in-
cludes a reduction of expenses
and stabilized or increased rev-
enues.
Were not out of the woods
yet, he said, adding he now has
to start looking at next years
budget.
There will be a public hearing
on the budget at the councils
Sept. 6 meeting.

The following reports are on
file with the Medford Police De-
partment:
On Aug. 1 at 8 p.m. Medford Po-
lice were called to the intersec-
tion of Jackson Road and Stokes
Road for a two-vehicle crash. The
subsequent investigation resulted
in a 25-year-old man from Min-
isink Trail in Shamong being ar-
rested for driving while intoxicat-
ed. His vehicle was impounded
and stored at a local facility.
On Aug. 2, he attempted to re-
move property from his vehicle
without the proper release. He
was stopped by facility staff who
observed him attempting to re-
move numerous GPS units from
his vehicle. Medford Police were
alerted and determined that he
and his vehicle matched the de-
scriptions provided by a resident
on Southwest Lakeside Drive who
observed someone in the drive-
way of a residence.
When confronted, the subject
ran to a vehicle, which was
parked at Birchwood beach. He
and his vehicle were also consis-
tent to a description provided by a
resident who observed suspicious
activity on Lakewood Avenue.
On Aug. 4, a search warrant
was executed on his vehicle and
11 GPS units, three iPods, a radar
detector, a purse, and sunglasses
were recovered. He was inter-
viewed by police and admitted to
stealing the items from unlocked
vehicles on Northwest Lakeside
Drive, Southwest Lakeside Drive,
and Lakewood Avenue in Med-
ford as well as Tuckerton Road in
Shamong.
He stole the items during the
evening hours of July 30, July 31
and Aug. 1. He was charged with
receiving stolen property and re-
leased.
Additional charges are pend-
ing upon determination of exact-
ly where the items were stolen
from. Anyone who believes that
the items may have been stolen
from them is asked to contact the
Medford Township Police at 609-
654-7375.
On Friday Aug. 5 at 3:53 p.m.,
Medford Township Police were
dispatched to the intersection of
Stokes Road and Nelson Drive for
a report of a motor vehicle crash.
Upon police arrival, a blue Dodge
Ram and a bicycle were located in
the parking lot of 700 Stokes
Road. The bicyclist was complain-
ing of pain in his right hand and
right hip.
The bicyclist's guardian signed
a medical refusal with E.M.S. Ini-
tial investigation revealed that
the Dodge Ram was making a left
turn onto Stokes Road from Nel-
son Drive.
The bicyclist was traveling
southbound in the northbound
lane of Stokes Road, at which
time the bicyclist crossed the cen-
ter line of the roadway at the in-
tersection of Nelson Drive and
was struck by the Dodge Ram.
On Aug. 6 at 10:31 p.m., Med-
ford police stopped a red 2010
Hyundai sedan after police ob-
served the vehicle cut through the
parking lot of Wawa to avoid the
stop light at Medford-Mt. Holly
Road and Church Road and then
drive around police barricades
onto westbound Church Road.
Upon making contact with the
driver, police observed a small
baggy of marijuana sticking out
of the front pocket of a rear juve-
nile passenger. The 17-year-old ju-
venile passenger was removed
from the vehicle and found to be
in possession of nine small bag-
gies of marijuana and two Xanax
pills.
Subsequently, the driver was
also removed from the vehicle
and at this time police observed a
marijuana cigar on the driver
side floor of the vehicle, which
the driver advised was his. The
driver and the 17-year-old were ar-
rested and transported to Med-
ford Police headquarters where
the driver was processed, issued a
summons for possession of less
than 50 grams of marijuana as
well as multiple motor vehicle
summonses and released pending
court.
The 17-year-old was processed

in our opinion
W
e arent anywhere close to
being sold on a second term
for Barack Obama.
We arent even close to being excited
about any of the current GOP wanna-
bes.
Chris Christie says he doesn't want
to run for president.
Hence, we were candidate-less.
Until now.
We hereby endorse Philadelphia
Mayor Michael Nutter for president
for one simple reason: The man tells it
like it is, which is way, way more than
what we are getting from any other
politician.
A week or so ago, Nutter threw po-
litical correctness out the window. Ac-
cording to recent reports, he spoke
with passion, honesty and sincerity.
And that's more than we get from most
politicians, who are worried only
about securing votes and pandering to
their political bases.
Nutter channeled Bill Cosby when
he talked about personal responsibili-
ty and addressing some of todays is-
sues. It wasn't the usual political fluff
we hear from officeholders. He didn't
blame society or unknown, unseen,
unavoidable forces of nature.
No, he said that parents need to be
responsible for raising their kids.
Now, it's sad that saying something
so obvious, so simple, so logical gar-
ners this much attention. It's sad be-
cause we've come to expect so little out
of our elected leaders. We've come to
expect excuses, lies and cowardice.
We're so conditioned to watching sup-
posed "leaders" dodge and duck basic
questions that, when someone just
says what's on his mind and steps up
to seriously address an issue, we're
blown away.
So, Mr. Mayor, how about it? Toss
your hat into the ring. If you get Cos to
run as your VP, you're in.
Finally, a politician with sense
Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter should run for the nations top job
And your pick?
Do any of the presidential hopefuls
get you excited to run to the polls
next November?

Congratulations, Kevin Comer: Hes a Jay
Seneca High School grad
chooses Blue Jays over Vandy
Kevin Comer is going straight from high
school to professional baseball, without
stopping for college along the way.
But he might go back later.
After verbally committing to attend Van-
derbilt University on a baseball scholar-
ship, the powerhouse pitcher from Seneca
High School in Tabernacle chose instead to
accept the offer from the Toronto Blue
Jays.
The Jays had chosen him all the way
back on June 6 the 57th overall pick in the
draft and Comer apparently has been
weighing his options from that day until
late Monday night...
...Yeah, a college education is important.
But they offered him $1.65 million. What
would you have done when you were 18?

Police uncover alleged burglar
by hearing him snore
Police in South Brunswick say they
caught a burglar napping loudly.
Officers who had arrested two suspects
at a commercial break-in were searching
the site afterward when they heard snor-
ing from over a large refrigeration unit in
the basement.
Police say they pulled out Israel Cortes,
35, of Ewing, whose brother Christian
Cortes of Pemberton had already been ar-
rested in the same burglary, according to
MSNBC.com.
A couple of hours earlier, an officer had
noticed cars parked behind the former Big
Eds restaurant on Route 130. After police
entered the basement, three suspects fled.
Christian Cortes was arrested right out-
side the building. Another suspect,
Richard Wilson, 39, of Ewing, was arrested
near the Travelers Inn Motel about an
hour later.

South Jersey natives producing
horror flick Deer Crossing
Swerving to avoid a deer can lead to un-
foreseen consequences.
Thats the jumping-off point for local in-
dependent film-in-the-making Deer Cross-
ing, which horror movie fans are already
buzzing about.
It starts with Maggy Chancelor (played
by Laura Lynn Cottrel) who has a 6-year-
old son. They are on their way to visit fami-
ly in the Poconos, get detoured, swerve to
avoid a deer and crash. They are abducted
and held hostage for eight years. The son
escapes and tells a detective of the horrors
he and his mother suffered during that
time.
Cameraman Amel Figueroa has lived in
South Jersey most of his life. He and his
business partner, Brandon Brooks, have a
small production company called SaintSin-
ner Entertainment based in Salem.
Id like to think of myself more than
just a cameraman, Figueroa said. I
mean, I believe (Im) an artist who can easi-
ly work with other artists to create some-
thing magnificent.
