The Cherry Hill Sun

It was a green team dream
come true.
Earlier this month, U.S. Sen.
Robert Menendez (D-NJ) chose to
deliver news about his Sustain-
able States Act of 2011 at the Cam-
den County Environmental Cen-
ter Parks Department building in
Cherry Hill.
And Menendez had good rea-
son to unveil his new national leg-
islation in the township. After all,
the legislation is based on the
Sustainable Jersey program, a
certification program for munici-
palities in the state that want to
make their communities more
sustainable, as well as promote
environmental consciousness for
future generations.
Cherry Hill is one of 74 munici-
palities in the state to receive cer-
tification. In total, 348 of the
states 566 municipalities are reg-
istered members of the program.
(The legislation) is inspired
by the incredible work of Sustain-
able Jersey. Cherry Hill is an out-
standing participant in Sustain-
able Jersey and a model of how a
community can take a proactive
role in making their community
more sustainable, Menendez
said.
Mayor Bernie Platt, Sustain-
able Cherry Hill Executive Direc-
tor Lori Braunstein, Camden
County Freeholder Director
Louis Capelli Jr. and former
Maplewood mayor and Sustain-
able Jersey founder Fred Profeta
joined Menendez to make the an-
nouncement.
Platt, who spoke about the
townships recent green efforts,
which include joining a green
purchasing cooperative, integrat-
ing hybrid SUVs into the munici-
pal fleet, implementing the Recy-
cleBank program, and installing
solar panels on the Public Works
building, thanked the local, re-
gional and national partners
Cherry Hill has gained by work-
ing to become more sustainable.
Together, weve put Cherry
Hill on the map as a green com-
munity, and while there is still
work to be done, when I look back
at all weve accomplished, Im so
proud. Throughout all of this, our
partnership with Sustainable
Cherry Hill and the recognition
and support weve received from
Sustainable Jersey have been crit-
ical in providing needed re-
sources that might not otherwise
have been available, Platt said.
Sen. Menendez has helped Cher-
ry Hill secure hundreds of thou-
sands of dollars in federal fund-
ing, allowing us to complete
many of these projects without
putting the financial burden on
our local taxpayers.
The legislation, which should
be introduced in the Senate next
month, would cost about $5 mil-
lion to implement nationwide,
Menendez said.
The U.S. Environmental Pro-
tection Agency would fund grants
up to $600,000 over three years to
build municipal sustainability
certification programs, modeled
after Sustainable Jersey, in partic-
ipating states. The EPA would
also make available $100,000
grants over three years to top per-
formers that are certified as sus-
tainable by their state.

e arent anywhere close to
being sold on a second term
for Barack Obama.
We arent even close to being excited
about any of the current GOP wanna-
bes.
Chris Christie says he doesn't want
to run for president.
Hence, we were candidate-less.
Until now.
We hereby endorse Philadelphia
Mayor Michael Nutter for president
for one simple reason: The man tells it
like it is, which is way, way more than
what we are getting from any other
politician.
A week or so ago, Nutter threw po-
litical correctness out the window. Ac-
cording to recent reports, he spoke
with passion, honesty and sincerity.
And that's more than we get from most
politicians, who are worried only
about securing votes and pandering to
their political bases.
Nutter channeled Bill Cosby when
he talked about personal responsibili-
ty and addressing some of todays is-
sues. It wasn't the usual political fluff
we hear from officeholders. He didn't
blame society or unknown, unseen,
unavoidable forces of nature.
No, he said that parents need to be
responsible for raising their kids.
Now, it's sad that saying something
so obvious, so simple, so logical gar-
ners this much attention. It's sad be-
cause we've come to expect so little out
of our elected leaders. We've come to
expect excuses, lies and cowardice.
We're so conditioned to watching sup-
posed "leaders" dodge and duck basic
questions that, when someone just
says what's on his mind and steps up
to seriously address an issue, we're
blown away.
So, Mr. Mayor, how about it? Toss
your hat into the ring. If you get Cos to
run as your VP, you're in.

Congratulations, Kevin Comer: Hes a Jay
Seneca High School grad
chooses Blue Jays over Vandy
Kevin Comer is going straight from high
school to professional baseball, without
stopping for college along the way.
But he might go back later.
After verbally committing to attend Van-
derbilt University on a baseball scholar-
ship, the powerhouse pitcher from Seneca
High School in Tabernacle chose instead to
accept the offer from the Toronto Blue
Jays.
The Jays had chosen him all the way
back on June 6 the 57th overall pick in the
draft and Comer apparently has been
weighing his options from that day until
late Monday night...
...Yeah, a college education is important.
But they offered him $1.65 million. What
would you have done when you were 18?

Police uncover alleged burglar
by hearing him snore
Police in South Brunswick say they
caught a burglar napping loudly.
Officers who had arrested two suspects
at a commercial break-in were searching
the site afterward when they heard snor-
ing from over a large refrigeration unit in
the basement.
Police say they pulled out Israel Cortes,
35, of Ewing, whose brother Christian
Cortes of Pemberton had already been ar-
rested in the same burglary, according to
MSNBC.com.
A couple of hours earlier, an officer had
noticed cars parked behind the former Big
Eds restaurant on Route 130. After police
entered the basement, three suspects fled.
Christian Cortes was arrested right out-
side the building. Another suspect,
Richard Wilson, 39, of Ewing, was arrested
near the Travelers Inn Motel about an
hour later.

South Jersey natives producing
horror flick Deer Crossing
Swerving to avoid a deer can lead to un-
foreseen consequences.
Thats the jumping-off point for local in-
dependent film-in-the-making Deer Cross-
ing, which horror movie fans are already
buzzing about.
It starts with Maggy Chancelor (played
by Laura Lynn Cottrel) who has a 6-year-
old son. They are on their way to visit fami-
ly in the Poconos, get detoured, swerve to
avoid a deer and crash. They are abducted
and held hostage for eight years. The son
escapes and tells a detective of the horrors
he and his mother suffered during that
time.
The director is Christian Grillo and the
director of photography is Scott Kaufman.
Cameraman Amel Figueroa has lived in
South Jersey most of his life. He and his
business partner, Brandon Brooks, have a
small production company called SaintSin-
ner Entertainment based in Salem.
Id like to think of myself more than
just a cameraman, Figueroa said. I
mean, I believe (Im) an artist who can easi-
ly work with other artists to create some-
thing magnificent.

Nearly 1,000 attendees enjoyed an exclusive tour inside seven of Absecon Islands most luxurious homes
earlier this month to benefit Jewish Family Service. The House Tour raised more than $45,000 for the
agencys Older Adult Services. Guests were able to take in the views of a bay-front home in Longport,
examine the eclectic art collection of a three-story home on Pacific Ave., and hear the rolling waves in
the newly-constructed Margate beach home. The JFS House Tour brings together the entire community
for an incredible day and cause our Older Adult Services, said JFS Executive Director Andrea Stein-
berg. This year was the best yet. It would not be possible without our gracious homeowners who lent
their homes to us for the day, over 100 volunteers, the entire JFS staff, and of course our wonderful co-
chairs Beth Shor and Susan Lutz. Jennifer Greenberg, Susan Meklinsky, Dawn Stern and Donna Nahum
of Cherry Hill took a trip to the shore for the 24th Annual JFS House Tour on Aug. 1.

In recent years, my administra-
tion has led an aggressive push to
recycle more, and, in the process,
propelled Cherry Hill into the
forefront of sustainability efforts
across New Jersey.
In fact, two weeks ago, Cherry
Hill was the backdrop for a spe-
cial announcement by U.S. Sen.
Robert Menendez, a champion of
green efforts and a longtime
friend of Cherry Hill, as he an-
nounced new legislation to roll
out a federal program to incen-
tivize municipal sustainability
programs.
As the senator noted during his
announcement, Cherry Hill has
served as a special model for its
ambitious push to implement
more sustainable policies and
procedures.
Time and again, those efforts
have proven that doing the right
thing ultimately pays off for mu-
nicipalities and for our taxpay-
ers.
Earlier this month, I received
news that Cherry Hill had once
again been chosen to receive a
hefty grant by the State Depart-
ment of Environmental Protec-
tion in recognition of the amount
of recycling tonnage collected in
a single year.
The grant, totaling $146,679,
was determined based on the
amount of materials collected in
the township in 2009.
It is the 10th largest allotment
of its kind in the state, and the
highest amount awarded in Cam-
den County. It is roughly $41,000
higher than the award given to
Cherry Hill last year.
The funding for these grants
comes from New Jerseys Recy-
cling Enhancement Act, which
was signed into law several years
ago to help the state reach its re-
cycling-rate targets.
The program has significantly
increased the amount of award
money available for local govern-
ments through a $3-per-ton sur-
charge on trash taken to solid-
waste disposal facilities.
Recycling is mandatory here in
New Jersey, and the DEPs pre-
scribed goal for its 566 municipal-
ities is a rate of 50 percent.
Cherry Hill boasts an impres-
sive rate of nearly 65 percent
compared with the average mu-
nicipal rate of just about 35 per-
cent.
That number has garnered nu-
merous awards and accolades for
our community, as well as hun-
dreds of thousands of dollars in
state and county incentives in re-
cent years.
Its a number that makes me
proud to be both mayor and a resi-

Cherry Hill a green model
Braunstein said the Sustain-
able Jersey model has served
Cherry Hill well and could do the
same for other towns nationally.
Sustainable Jersey gets local
governments and community
stakeholders to work together to
achieve certification, Braun-
stein said. Realizing the collec-
tive vision of a sustainable future
requires such collaboration and
communication, and this strategy
has worked beautifully here in
Cherry Hill.
The next step to move the legis-
lation forward, Menendez said, is
to find a Republican co-sponsor.
He said he hopes the legislation
will be considered as an amend-
ment to various energy measures
that will reach the Senate floor
this fall.
For now, Menendez said, he is
just excited about the potential
for Sustainable Jersey-like pro-
grams to reach a national audi-
ence.
Were taking what weve
learned here in New Jersey and
taking it to the national level,
Menendez said. Were making
good on our obligation to future
generations by taking it national-
ly.

dent of this community.
I firmly believe that we have
two factors to thank for this suc-
cess: the rollout of the Recycle-
bank program three years ago
and, more importantly, our resi-
dents.
Since the programs inception,
weve seen our recycling rates
nearly double, and our benefits as
a community have in turn grown.
Our households have em-
braced incentivized recycling,
using Recyclebanks reward
points to save themselves money,
and in the process, become more
closely engaged in our municipal
waste-reduction initiatives.
Whats more, though, is that
this increase in curbside recy-
cling has directly affected the cost
of municipal trash-hauling and
processing again resulting in
tens of thousands of dollars in
savings for our taxpayers. Simply
put, the less waste were sending
to the incinerator at a rate of
about $65 per ton the less money
were paying in tipping fees, and
the less pollution were dispers-
ing into the air.
As we move toward the future,
I look forward to sharing other
ways that we as a local govern-
ment can help promote recycling.
For example, last Monday, the
Cherry Hill library launched a
partnership with Recyclebank
that will give patrons bonus re-
wards points every time they bor-
row a book from the library.
Read more about that effort on
our website at www.CherryHill-
NJ.com.
In the meantime, please feel
free to share your thoughts on all
our environmental efforts by call-
ing my office at 488-7878, or e-

Crude: The Real Price
of Oil to be discussed
The Cherry Hill Library, in
partnership with the New Jersey
Council for the Humanities
(NJCH), will host a screening and
scholar-led discussion of the
movie CRUDE: The Real Price of
Oil. This film provides an in-
side look at the infamous $27 bil-
lion Amazon Chernobyl case.
The plantiffs claim that Texaco
(now Chevron) spent three
decades systematically contami-
nating one of the most bio-diverse
regions on earth. Rutgers Univer-
sity Bloustein School of Planning
and Public Policy professor,
Frank Popper, will lead the
screening and discussion on
Thursday, Sept. 15 from 7 to 9 p.m.
at the Cherry Hill Library. The
event is free, but registration is
required. For more info., visit
