In cardiovascular procedures, the responsibility for opening the sterile disposable linen package
lies with the cardiovascular surgical instrument maker, who must reduce the possibility of
contamination by preserving the entire contents of the sterile package, in order to guarantee the
safe care of the patients of the Institute Cardiovascular de Bucaramanga at the different sites.
The disposable linen package is protected by single or double wrapping and these have four ends
and two sides which are: lower left and right end, upper left and right end, inner or sterile side
and the outer or clean side.
These packages are wrapped in such a way that when the opening is made it is easier and the
sterile part is preserved.
There are two techniques to perform this disposable package opening, open technique: it can be
performed with and without gloves or with a transfer forceps and the closed technique: it is with
sterile gown and gloves.
At the Heart Institute of Bucaramanga S.A. for the opening of disposable clothing packages
cardiovascular models, is the open technique through the manual method with sterile gloves
since the packaging of disposable packages is usually made of medical grade paper and
impermeable polypropylene industry.

Development
Precautions and recommendations:
Before performing the opening of a disposable clothing package should be verified:
 The authenticity of the sterilization through a witness tape and/or the external control marker
of the polypropylene paper, which ensures that it was exposed to a sterilization process.
 Make sure that the package is not worn and/or perforated.
 Verify the name of the package to be used according to its content and the needs of the
surgical procedure to be performed.
 Verify the expiration date of the package
 Wash or disinfect hands before opening the package.
 When the sterile package is already fully opened, you should stay away if you are not
wearing a sterile surgical gown.
Description of activities:
 The package is placed in the center of the clean and dry reserve table.
 With clean and dry hands open the outer wrapper of the sterile packet and slide the contents
onto the reserve table
 Then the sterile glove position is performed with open technique.
 To open the sterile package, the sterile package should be removed by traction, taking care
not to tear it, since it is reinforced and sealed with a paper band.
 Take each corner of the wrapper, lower and upper left tip, lower and upper right tip and
gently drop it on the table.
 Simultaneously open the top and bottom right ends of the package cover and slide them over
the entirety of this area of the reserve table.
 Repeat the same maneuver with the upper and lower left ends.
 Check and remove the chemical indicator of the sterile package, which guarantees the
sterility of the internal content of the package and allows us to guarantee an adequate area for
the circulation and handling of the medical devices to be used in the surgical procedure.
 Place the pieces of the contents of the package in the upper right corner.
 Place the instruments necessary for the procedure in the upper left corner.
 Proceed to regularize the edges of the package by fixing the ends of the package with
hemostatic clamps, adhesive tapes or tying them manually, both on the left side and on the
right side of the reserve table.
 Proceed to the circulation of the medical devices necessary for the surgical procedure,
according to the needs of the procedure, verifying the quality control and maintaining the
adequate aseptic technique.
