Frequently Asked
Questions About:
Q: Is a facelift the only way to
achieve a younger look?
A: No.
Dr. Wise offers numerous procedures and
techniques that create a more youthful,
refreshed look.
Q: What is involved with a
facelift?
A: Dr. Wise performs minimally-invasive
facial rejuvenation procedures that restore
the young architecture of the face and
minimize recovery after surgery. By tight-
ening the neck and defining the jaw line,
Dr. Wises technique has created a long
lasting, natural and youthful appearance
in over 3,000 procedures.
Q: Does it take a long time to
recover from a facelift?
A: No.
Dr. Wise incorporates a protocol that
accelerates healing and rapidly
decreases bruising and swelling. This is
achieved by an advanced surgical
technique, nutritional supplements, and
vitamins. Most patients are able to
resume their normal routine in a relatively
short time.
Q: What is fat transfer?
A: Surgeons who perform facial
rejuvenation procedures have long
recognized the importance of volume
enhancement. Recent techniques with fat
grafting have provided for predictable
and longer lasting results. Fat is the ideal
soft tissue filler substance because it is
from your own body and you can never
have an allergic reaction. Dr. Wise
frequently performs fat transfer in
conjunction with face lifting to achieve a
more natural, youthful look.

T
iger Woods has fallen
from the top of the
leaders bulletins, the
player money list, the TV talk
shows; hes lost his best endorse-
ments, the magazine covers, he
is no longer the talk of greatness
and the man to beat on the golf
course. He has fallen from
Grace, ruined his marriage to a
wonderful mother and a beauti-
ful woman, from what the pub-
lic saw as perfection at his
profession and from his stoic
and focused demeanor in front
of the camera. I think his fail-
ures and performance on the
fairways of late, has generated as
much interest and public com-
ment, as his successes and tri-
umphs gained for him just a few
short years ago. Tiger Woods
has proven a lot of things in his
career, the most of which is that
he is a human being,handi-
capped by the frailties, desires,
weaknesses and emotions that
go with it. He proved not to be
unbeatable; however, he ele-
vated the other players to his
level of play, like Roger Bannis-
ters breaking the 4 minute mile
for the first time in human his-
tory in 1954. It took hundreds
of years for a man to run that
fast, where today, hundreds of
athletes can do it. It took one
man to prove that it could be
done and then others quickly
reached and surpassed Mr. Ban-
nisters time. The same will be
said of Tiger Woods accom-
plishments on the course and I
believe it will be Tiger himself,
in time, making those come-
back statements while wearing
the Green Jacket once again at
the Masters. But, until his re-
turn to greatness and back to
the top of his game, the sports-
casters will continue to chastise
and mock him, the fans will
continue to revel in his slump
and the other players will have a
chance to say they beat the
Great Tiger Woods.
Though the public and the
reporters might count him
down and out, the players and
his true fans understand his tal-
ent and what a threat he can be.
When he regains his focus, con-
centration and technique, he
will attack the game like he
never did before and I predict
he will be a better player, sur-
passing his best scores, coming
back with feats of amazement
everywhere on the grass, sand
and circumventing water haz-
ards. He is a young man who
found too much success, too
quickly and at too young an age.
He has the most recognizable
face in the world, not just the
sports world and the pressure to
perform and constantly be in
the public eye proved too much

for him, for the moment. After
all of this he fired his caddy,
Steve Williams, (reasons un-
known) who found immediate
success working with the Aus-
tralian Adam Scott. Tiger is
only 35 years old, a young man
in an old game with plenty of
time for a comeback. He has a
new coach and caddy and will
begin again despite the negative
noise from the gallery and press
box.
So too, will the stock mar-
ket recover, despite the many
prognosticators predictions of
gloom and doom. The econ-
omy willrecover, unemploy-
ment will ease, banks will lend
again, the housing market will
once again gain traction and
prices will rise, interest rates will
increase on savings vehicles,
gold and silver prices willfall,
401k and IRA values will once
again increase in value, con-
sumer confidence will rise and
with increased spending not far
behind. This is why they call
the markets cyclical. It has al-
ways happened this way and al-
ways will happen this way. The
big questions are: Will you be
ready for it? Will you be posi-
tioned for it? Will you take ad-
vantage of the depressed prices
of today to profit tomorrow?
Will you take action? A ques-
tion you never want to ask your-
self is: Will you miss the boat?
Think about this for a mo-
ment. If you are at least 40 years
old, economic malaise, such as
we are currently experiencing,
has happened in 1973, 1987,
1990, 1994, 2000, 2001, 2002,
2008 and fortunes were made in
the years immediately following
by average and ordinary work-
ing folks like us. Based on his-
torical facts that you can chart
and judge for yourself and with-
out picking individual winning
stocks, you can benefit from the
cyclical events of the stock,
bond and housing markets, just
like the tycoons do. In most
cases, a minimum investment to
get started can be as low as a few
thousand dollars, maybe even
less. My message for this partic-
ular column is to put a little
Tiger in your tank. Its time to
get back in the game and be an
investor again. Maybe you need
a new coach or caddy also with
new winning ideas, strategies
and techniques to mitigate risk
that can ensure success. Maybe
even with a few guarantees*
thrown-in that insures your re-
tirement income. Would you
like these features for your in-
vested dollars and retirement
portfolio? If so, please consider
me for the coaching and caddy-
ing positions. Id like to help.

lothing styles change
on a whim according
to what trend forecast-
ers see as the it items of the
season. People looking to keep
abreast of certain styles or just
maintain a fresh supply of dif-
ferent wardrobe options may
find that replenishing a closet
can be an expensive venture.
But it doesnt have to be.
Those without a set
budget may be able to afford
monthly shopping trips to add
new pieces to a wardrobe.
However, the average person
lives on a tighter budget, and
there may not be as much
room for discretionary spend-
ing on clothing and acces-
sories. According to
VisualEconomics .com, a fam-
ily of three making about
$64,000 per year can expect to
spend roughly 4 percent of
those earnings on apparel and
services.
People interested in re-
freshing their selection of
clothing more frequently
should consider alternative op-
tions than buying retail. Here
are some ideas to think about.
Clothing Swap
A good way to socialize
and switch-up a wardrobe is to
host a clothing swap party. In-
vite around 10 friends or family
members to be part of it. Be
sure to have at least 2 or 3 of
the same-sized people so that
there wont be an abundance
of items to fit one person and
not enough to fit another.
Shoes and accessories are also
acceptable.
Set the rules for the
event, where each person is en-
titled to take as many items as
she has brought. Encourage
guests to bring clean, gently
used items that are in good
quality. Because this type of
get-together involves some ad-
vanced work of sorting through
clothing, be sure to give guests
ample advance notice.
Have refreshments on
hand and opportunities to chat
over styles and options. What-
ever clothes are not taken by
others can be donated to char-
ity.
Consignment Stores
It used to be that consign-
ment stores were the stepchil-
dren of the retail world. Many
people viewed them as glori-
fied tag sales and didnt think
they were worthy of investiga-
tion.
Nowadays, consignment shops
are big business and good
places for savvy shoppers to
visit. Much like overstock
stores sell items on discount
that are on par with depart-
ment stores, consignment
shops often offer new or very
lightly used items for resale
at a fraction of the original re-
tail price. Plus, theyre an ideal
place to look for unique pieces
and accessories that might oth-
erwise have been out of budget.
Shop Basics
When buying new items
at a store, buy pieces that can
be put together in a variety of
combinations. Stick to similar
colors and themes so that each
piece will work seamlessly.
Consider multi-layered items
that can be worn with a cardi-
gan or without; or go from the
office to a dinner date after-
ward. Remember, items that
blend can be worn more often
because they wont stick out in
the minds of others as some-
thing flashy.
Consider Shopping Online
Shoppers are often
amazed at the wide variety of
items that can be purchased
online. If a shopper doesnt see
something in a store for the
price she wants, she can com-
parison shop online. Although
she cant try on merchandise,
with the exception of some
sites that offer a virtual model,
many online retailers offer free

ear Doc:
Ive had enough of
this pain in the neck
(and its not my husband)! De-
spite drugs and lots of therapy,
my shoulder and neck pain has
been progressively worsening
for years. What can I do?
Had Enough
Dear Had Enough:
Next to spouses and in-
laws, faulty spinal mechanics is
the primary cause of most neck
pain. Functional problems of
the spine can usually be traced
to incorrect spinal alignment
due to abnormal posture and
previous trauma. Closely asso-
ciated with abnormal posture
are other causes of neck pain
such as repetitive strain, mus-
cular weakness, and degenera-
tive changes of the discs and
joints of the spine.
To find the right solution
for your particular problem,
you need to be accurately as-
sessed. Chiropractic physicians
are specialists in the assess-
ment and treatment of muscle
and joint problems, including
neck and neck-related pain.
From a thorough assessment,
your chiropractor can deter-
mine the most effective and
appropriate course of care. For
example, Sandra consulted
her chiropractor for help with
neck pain that for years had
been getting worse. She had
tried various therapies, exer-
cise programs and medication
to find relief, to no avail.
When the chiropractor exam-
ined Sandra it was apparent
she had serious malalignment
of the vertebrae in the lower
part of her neck. Infact, x-rays
showed a complete reversal of
the normal cervical curve. Her
chiropractor explained how
her neck pain was a direct re-
sult of this abnormal spinal po-
sition, which was causing
muscle weakness, disc com-
pression, nerve irritation and
gradual deterioration of her
spine.
Now that Sandra under-
stood why medication, work-
ing out and various therapies
were not the answer, she chose
to work hard to correct the real
problem: alignment of her
neck. Her treatment involved
specific, gentle chiropractic
adjustments and other proce-
dures to improve joint mobil-
ity and restore normal spinal
curves and alignment.The re-
sult? After several months of
dedicated work Sandras x-rays
demonstrated near-normal
spinal position. Her spine was
now able to move and work
better, finally dispelling her
chronic neck pain. The impact
this had on her life was enor-
mous. Not only was she happy
again and able to do the things
she loved, Sandra realized with
a healthier spine she had been
given a new lease on life!

ogs have a unique
way of introduction
to other dogs...they
sniff each others backsides.
They do this because each dog
has a unique scent that is
produced by their anal glands
or anal sacs. While many peo-
ple arent even aware that
these glands exist, they play
an important role in a dogs
behavior. They use this scent
to identify one another, as a
form of communication, and
when they were in the wild, as
a way to mark their territory
or scare off an enemy.
Anal glands are located
just beneath the skin on either
side of the anus. The glands
produce a foul and often fishy
smelling liquid. Whenever
your pet defecates, a small
amount of this liquid is ex-
creted, contributing to your
dogs personal fragrance. Most
people never even know that
these glands exist because in
most pets they dont cause any
problems. Although anal
glands can fail to empty
sufficiently and cause a
number of issues for your
pet.
The most common
problem with anal glands
occurs when the liquid
produced by the gland
becomes thickened; they
are unable to be ex-
pressed and cannot be
emptied. This results in
impaction which is ex-
tremely uncomfortable
for your pet. Typical signs
of anal gland impaction
include scooting (drag-
ging their rear ends along
the ground) or licking/biting at
their rear end. Sometimes
stools may become loose or
even a drop of blood can be
seen in them. The good news
is anal gland impaction can
usually be cleared up quickly
by your veterinarian. Your vet-
erinarian will manually express
or empty the anal glands. This
can be a onetime trip to the
vets office but for many dogs
anal gland impaction is an on-
going problem.
There are a variety of rea-
sons why a pet might have
trouble expressing its anal
glands. Sometimes it depends
on the thickness of the secre-
tion itself which may be too
thick to express easily. Also,
the consistency or bulkiness of
an animals stools can affect
anal gland function. Stools
which are too small or too soft
might not push on the glands
enough to cause expression.
That is why its important to
make sure your pet eats a
high quality diet which is
high enough in fiber to en-
sure large solid stools. A nat-
ural way to bulk the feces is
to add a small amount of
canned pumpkin to the diet.
An unfortunate sequel to
anal gland impaction is in-
fection and abscess of the
anal gland. If an impacted
anal gland is left untreated
and not expressed, abscesses
can develop fairly quickly. In
this case, your pet will expe-
rience moderate to severe
pain versus just discomfort.
The scooting or licking the
anal area becomes more fre-
quent and dogs will often
growl or try to bite when one
tries to touch them anywhere
in that general area. Anal
gland abscesses usually require
more invasive treatment like
lancing and draining the ab-
scess plus antibiotics. It is
therefore important to bring
your pet to your veterinarian as
soon as you notice any signs
that might indicate an anal
gland problem.
You are lucky if your pet
has never had an anal gland
problem. Now that you know
they exist, it is important to
watch for any signs of anal
gland problems in your pet and
to act promptly if they do.

n addition to having an un-
stable knee, living with an
ACL tear can cause so
much more damage to other
structures of the knee. An
ACL is critically important to
the stability of the knee joint.
While certain patients may tol-
erate living with a PCL tear
with reasonably good out-
comes, most patients do poorly
with an ACL deficient knee.
The typical history is an
athlete who comes to a sudden
stop and turns. Typically, fe-
males are at increased risk than
males. A pop may be felt,
and there may be a significant
amount of associated pain deep
in the knee joint. Within the
next 12 to 24 hours, the knee
may swell. A visit to the emer-
gency department and initial
radiographs may not show any
problems. Many patients at
this point may dismiss it as a
bad sprain and not seek fur-
ther evaluation and treatment.
The issue is that radiographs
are useful mostly to show bone
structures, and will not pick up
further internal pathology such
as ligament tears and meniscus
tears.
Over the following weeks,
the swelling often settles down
and the patient may feel
pretty good. It may only be
with cutting and pivoting ac-
tivities that the person many
feel any instability. The typi-
cal story that we hear is that
they gave up certain sports be-
cause they couldnt trust their
knee after a bad sprain. Their
biggest concern is that their
knee feels loose when going
down a set of stairs. In many
cases, this may just be the
honeymoon phase as their
ACL deficient knee further de-
teriorates.
As a central ligament in
the knee, the ACL plays a key
role in stabilizing the knee in
translational (front to back)
and rotational stress. When-
ever coming to a stop or chang-
ing directions, the femur (thigh
bone) naturally glides 7 to 8
mm relative to the tibia (leg
bone). The ACL acts as a stop
for the leg from gliding further.
Without an ACL, there is lit-
tle to prevent the joint from
shifting further. Herein ar-
guably lies the biggest problem
in a knee without an ACL: the
extra shifting and gliding puts
a tremendous amount of stress
on the other structures in the
knee. The cartilage surface
gets a characteristic pattern of
wear and tear, leading to pre-
mature arthritis. The instabil-
ity may lead to a tear of the
medial and/or lateral meniscus,
thereby damaging an impor-
tant shock absorber in the
knee. Fragments of cartilage
may slough off, turning into
loose bodies, which can cause
serious havoc in the knee.
The question often gets
asked by mothers of teenagers
and 42 years old weekend war-
riors alike: which patients
should have their ACLs recon-
structed through surgery. The
textbook answer for decades
has been those with func-
tional instability. However, as
we learn more and more about
the importance of the ACL,
the trend clearly has been to
intervene sooner, in order to
avoid damage to the other
structures in the knee.

lence of DCD is estimated at
8-12% of all school- aged
children with more boys diag-
nosed than girls (2:1). As a
result of the wide diversity in
the DCD diagnosis, finding
its true cause has been diffi-
cult and is unknown at this
time. Some speculate that
DCD can be caused by an in-
jury that occurs before or dur-
ing the birthing process.
Others say that DCD is a re-
sult of damage on the cellular
level.
In order for a child to be
diagnosed with DCD it must
impact on some aspect of his
or her life. These children
often exhibit poor balance,
tripping on uneven surfaces,
an awkward running pattern,
dropping items, frequent trip-
ping and falling, difficulty im-
itating body positions and
following 2-3 step motor di-
rections. These motor prob-
lems will affect the childs
ability to complete motor ori-
ented tasks. Because of these
problems, children often per-
form poorly in sports demon-
strating slow reaction and
movement times. Since these
children do not feel successful
when participating in sports,
they may feel insecure. This
insecurity can lead to a more
sedentary lifestyle for the
child thus causing poor mus-
cular strength, decreased mus-
cle force and ultimately
weight gain. Unfortunately,
children with DCD may ex-
perience other difficulties, be-
sides the physical limitations.
These children may exhibit
psychosocial problems. Be-

types of attention. They may
be the class clown or act out
more often than the other
children. Adolescents with
DCD have been found to
have fewer friends, lower self
esteem and more anxiety
than their peers without
DCD.
Historically parents have
been told not to worry about
their childs clumsiness. The
child will outgrow the prob-
lem. However, current re-
search states that children do
not outgrow clumsiness and
without intervention, will not
improve.
Motor control processes
are complex and depend on
integrating the sensory, per-
ceptual, cognitive and motor
systems. A skilled Pediatric
Physical Therapist can work
on integrating all of these sys-
tems to assist the child in
working toward age appropri-
ate functional goals. By
breaking down components
of a task, practicing each
component repetitively and
translating the new skill into
the childs natural environ-
ment, motor skills can be
greatly improved, confidence
and self assuredness enhanced
and enthusiasm and partici-
pation in sports and age ap-
propriate games greatly
increased. I have worked
with hundreds of children
with symptoms that fall into
this category with excellent
and permanent results that
both parents and children are
greatly pleased with.
Gena Livingston is a pediatric
physical therapist, who brings
over five years of experience to
Kids Therapy Center of
Riverdale. Specializing in early
childhood intervention, Gena is
very experienced treating chil-
dren with cerebral palsy, de-
layed motor development,
autism, torticollis, post-surgical
corrections, and athletic in-
juries. If you would like to

nce someone has the
love of dance in
their heart, it never
leaves them and hence the
reason for the long lived suc-
cess of the Linda DAmico
Academy of Dance for the
past 34 years.
From recreational to
competitive, Linda DAmico
has been teaching area
dancers how to enjoy dancing
from the heart, just as she has
for all these years.
It is truly impressive to
see people of all ages come to
the Academy and dance at
their own level to release
their tension and express
their joy and grow as people.
Eight instructors bring
their expertise in different
types of dance offered in their
state of the art studio located
at 574 Newark Pompton
Turnpike in Pompton Plains.
From ballet, Pointe, ball-
room, tap, jazz, lyrical, mod-
ern and hip-hop, musical
theater and gymnastics to the
exercise programs of Latin
aerobics and Pilates, Linda
DAmico says the instructors
lead classes that are at differ-
ent degrees of intensity in a
relaxed atmosphere.
As lead instructor Linda
M. DAmico has owned and
operated the Academy of
Dance since 1976. Her motto
is share your love of dance,
and she has been living it for
the last 56 years through
studying, performing, choreo-
graphing and teaching.
Linda was born and
raised in Cleveland, Ohio.
She studied at Charlotte
Teller School of Dance, the
Cleveland Institute of Music
and Arthur Murray Dance
Studios. Lindas love of
dance brought her to New
York to study at Ballet Arts
and June Taylor Dance Stu-
dio, and vocally trained with
Robert Lewis of NYC. She is
Vice President of the New
York Chapter of the National
Association of Dance Affili-
ated Artists.
Linda has been dancing
since she was three years old
under the loving care of her
mother. She started off per-
forming as a child in the pro-
duction of The Nutcracker
with the New Jersey Ballet
and was crowned Miss Tal-
ent by National American
Miss. She has grown to be a
very versatile performing
artist and choreographer
while still pursuing her BFA
in Dance at Montclair State
University.
Along with continuous
study in all venues at Steps on
Broadway and Broadway
Dance Center in New York
City, she has substituted for
Derek Mitchell at Broadway
Dance Center as well as
served as an assistant at Na-
tional Association of Dance
and the Affiliated Arts and
has most recently studied
under Nicole Smith with
Freespace Dance 2. Linda
continues to study and train
with enthusiasm, dedication
and true love of her craft and
seeks to continuously inspire
and be inspired.

odays kids are busier
than ever before. Be it
the increasingly com-
petitive nature of scholastic life
or the increase of two-income
households where kids need
something to do other than
come directly home after school,
children today are much busier
than their school-aged counter-
parts of yesteryear.
While it can be fun and
beneficial for kids to participate
in extracurricular activities,
finding the right fit isnt as easy
as it sounds. When helping kids
find an extracurricular activity,
its best to consider a host of fac-
tors. Especially keep in mind
that not all kids are the same
with respect to interests. And
what was enjoyed by their par-
ents wont necessarily be en-
joyed by them.
Getting Started
The best place to start is to
speak to kids about their inter-
ests. Just because Dad loved
playing football doesnt mean
Junior is destined to be a grid-
iron great. Kids have their own
interests, and those interests can
be cultivated with the right ex-
tracurricular activity. For exam-
ple, a creative child might enjoy
an after-school art class a couple
of times per week. Parents
should also consider extracurric-
ular that can help kids grow as
people. For instance, a child
whos shy in public but loves
hamming it up at home might
embrace an after-school theater
program.
Once options have been
discussed with kids, take in a
session or two before commit-
ting to anything. The shy
youngster might visit the local
theater program and enjoy it
thoroughly, or he or she might
decide against it. Either way, a
visit will give kids and parents a
sense of what the program is like
and whether or not its the right
fit. When visiting, observe the
nature of the program. Is it an
encouraging, vibrant environ-
ment? Do the adults and kids
involved appear to be having
fun?
Get the 411
Parents want their kids to
be as safe after school as they are
during it. When looking for an
extracurricular activity, inquire
about the staff-to-child ratio
and about the staffs professional
background. Any staff-to-child
ratio that is greater than 12:1
likely indicates a program that
is understaffed, which mean
kids could wont get the atten-
tion they need. Also, ask for the
staffs references and work his-
tory in the field of child care. If
certification is necessary or rec-
ommended, make sure the staff
meets all requirements.

omeowners who
have had prior issues
with mold know just
how pesky a mold problem
can be. When mold spores
land on surfaces that are wet,
mold may begin to grow in-
doors. And the growth of
mold takes just a matter of
hours. According to the Na-
tional Association of Home
Builders, all it takes is 48
hours for a moist environ-
ment combined with room
temperature to produce mold
growth.
When mold does begin
to grow, homeowners will no-
tice a less-than-wel-
coming aroma often
characterized as
musty. In addition,
mold growth, which
is most common in
areas of the home
like the kitchen,
bathroom and base-
ment where humid-
ity and moisture
levels are higher,
can be unsightly and
unhealthy. In 2004,
the Institute of
Medicine linked in-
door exposure to
mold with upper res-
piratory tract symp-
toms, cough and
wheeze in people
who, prior to expo-
sure, were healthy.
The IOM also found
exposure to mold
can exacerbate
asthma conditions for people
who already have asthma and
even linked respiratory illness
in otherwise healthy children
to exposure to mold.
What such research
highlights is the emphasis
homeowners must place on
removing mold from their
homes. While mold is a natu-
ral part of the environment
that is impossible to eliminate
entirely, homeowners can
take steps to stop mold
growth in their homes and
protect themselves and their
families along the way. When
addressing a mold problem,
keep in mind the potentially
negative impact mold can
have on your health and dress
accordingly. Wear long
sleeves, gloves, protective
goggles, and even a mask or
respirator that covers the
nose and mouth to reduce
your risk of developing a res-
piratory illness.
Fix leaky pipes and addi-
tional water problems. Mold
growth can cause cosmetic
damage that can
never be repaired.
But fixing leaky
pipes and addressing
other water prob-
lems, including leaky
windows, is a good
way to stop future
mold growth and
prevent further cos-
metic damage to the
home.
Scrub and dry
moldy surfaces.
When addressing
moldy surfaces, scrub
them hard with de-
tergent and water,
once finished, dry
the surfaces thor-
oughly. Going for-
ward, routinely clean
areas of the home
that have had mold
growth in the past.
Discard certain ma-
terials that fall victim to
mold. Porous or absorbent
surfaces will likely need to be
discarded once they have
been victimized by mold
growth. Ceiling tiles and car-
pets, for example, are espe-
cially difficult to rid of mold
once its settled in because
the mold finds cracks and
crevices in which it essen-
tially hides from cleaning. In
such cases, its best to simply
discard the items and have

odays homeowners are
increasingly eco-con-
scious. As a result, many
homeowners take an eco-friend-
ly approach toward home im-
provement projects. Whereas
homeowners once worried most
about their bottom lines without
regard for the environment,
nowadays a projects carbon
footprint is high on many a
homeowners priority list. Whats
more, eco-friendly additions or
adjustments to a home might
make homeowners eligible for
tax breaks, and such projects of-
ten make a home more appeal-
ing to prospective buyers. Some
of the more common ways to
make a home more eco-friend-
ly includes:
Replace vinyl flooring with
natural linoleum or recycled
rubber floors.
Replace old carpet with carpet
tiles made of recycled content
or use organic cotton area rugs
throughout the home.
Replace stone countertops
with bamboo, terrazzo or paper-
stone alternatives.
Replace traditional wood
flooring with reclaimed wood
flooring or aesthetically appeal-
ing bamboo flooring.
them replaced.
Do not mask the mold prob-
lem. Painting or caulking
over mold wont work. When
applied to moldy surfaces,
paint typically cracks. Instead
of wasting paint and time,
scrub and dry the surfaces,
making sure the entire mold is
gone, and then paint or caulk.
Leave big jobs to the pros.
Smaller mold growths can be
addressed by the average
homeowner. However, when
mold growth is especially
large or mold has grown on
valuable items, including
heirlooms, its best to hire a
professional. When doing so,
try to find one a friend or
neighbor can recommend, as
not all mold-removal special-
ists are created equal. If its
hard to find a recommenda-
tion, look for a specialist who
is affiliated with a profes-
sional organization. Such or-
ganizations typically insist
their members have a certain
level of experience and train-
ing before they can become
members.

reating simple, deli-
cious meals does not
have to be difficult.
With the right ingredients on
hand and a little know-how, you
can create tasty meals right from
your own kitchen. Italian dishes
full of flavorful, fresh, tomato
bases are some of the most pop-
ular around. Just think of the
multitude of pasta options or
meat, seafood and vegetable a la
parmigiana dishes.
Tomatoes: A staple of Italian
cooking
Tomatoes are the heart of
many popular Italian-style or
Mediterranean meals. Not
every home chef has the time or
the space to grow their own
tomatoes. Even still, certain va-
rieties taste better than others.
Pre-packaged tomatoes are a
handy option for home cooks.
When shopping, select high-
quality, fresh-tasting, garden-
ripe tomatoes, like those from
Pomi.
Not all tomatoes are cre-
ated equal. Those from Pomi
are specially grown in Italy and
processed right next to the fields
where they were harvested.
These 100-percent natural
tomatoes yield some of the
freshest flavor for cooking.
Studies indicate that cooked
tomatoes are an important com-
ponent in immune system
health. Tomatoes are high in ly-
copene an antioxidant that
gives tomatoes their bright color
and can fend off certain cancers.
You also want to look for
tomatoes that are safely pack-
aged, without the use of BPA
(bisphenol A), a carcinogenic
chemical that is often used in
plastics and in resin linings of
metal cans. Pomi stay-fresh
packaging is always BPA-free
and is specially designed to en-
sure a long shelf life. These
tomatoes are always available.
So, just Pomi when the urge to
create delicious food strikes you.
Secret of the professionals
The popularity of cable how-to
cooking channels has enabled
home cooks to learn some in-
sider secrets from some of the
worlds most renowned chefs.
For decades, Mario Batali
has wowed diners with his culi-
nary flair at several successful
restaurants, including Del
Posto and showed his expertise
on many long-running televi-
sion cooking shows. He has also
authored several best-selling
cookbooks. In his 2010 release
Molto Gusto, Batali an ex-
pert on authentic Italian cuisine
routinely recommends the
use of Pomi tomatoes for his col-
lection of pizza, pasta and an-
tipasti recipes.
Inspired menu creation
Chefs looking to get
started on their next mouthwa-
tering culinary creation can
consider this recipe for Chicken
Breast Sorrento, courtesy of
Pomi.
Chicken Breast Sorrento
2 whole chicken breasts,
skinned
1 cup water
11/2 cups Pomi, strained
1 small onion
1 small carrot
3 tablespoons olive oil
Juice of one lemon
Salt and pepper
Lettuce for garnish
Simmer chicken breasts in
water, tightly covered, with 1/4
teaspoon salt, onion and carrot
until tender (about 1/2 hour),
adding water if necessary. Cool,
drain, remove bones and slice
breasts. Mix the lemon juice
with olive oil, 1/4 teaspoon salt,
pepper and Pomi. Pour a small
portion of the sauce onto a plat-
ter, place the sliced chicken
breasts on top and pour the re-
maining sauce over the
chicken. Garnish with lettuce.

Parents should also in-
quire about program costs.
Though many programs are up-
front about fees, some have
hidden fees that can add up.
Such fees can be for uniforms,
equipment, class trips, etc.
Extra fees dont have to ex-
clude a program from consider-
ation, but its better to know
about them in advance than
have them come as a surprise.
Consider a Childs Grade
Level
A childs age and grade
level should also be considered
when choosing an extracurric-
ular activity. Consult teachers
about finding an age-appropri-
ate extracurricular activity. For
example, less competitive ac-
tivities that emphasize fun
might be more appropriate for
kids in kindergarten and the
first grade. For second graders,
activities not offered at school,
like learning to play an instru-
ment, can help cultivate a
childs interest in a noncompet-
itive environment. As kids
reach third grade and beyond,
consider more rules-based ac-
tivities, including team sports,
as kids at that age are more ca-
pable of understanding rules
and handling losing than
younger kids. As children get
older and move on to middle
school, look for activities that
reinforce learning and help de-
velop a young persons charac-
ter, including their ability to
interact with others.
When looking for an ex-
tracurricular activity for kids,
parents should consider a host
of factors, including the childs
interests and age.

vorite online retailers and sign
up to be notified of any deals or
sales.
Coordinate with teachers
ahead of time. Parents should
consult their childs teacher be-
fore school begins and through-
out the year to determine if
there are any special projects or
reports coming up that require
certain supplies. For instance,
kids might need costly graphing
calculators next semester. If par-
ents are given advance notice,
they can shop around to get the
best deal. Talk to local school
officials to see if its possible to
make a list of school supplies
available at the end of the year
instead of at the very begin-
ning. If so, this gives parents
several months to shop around
for the best deals.
Do your own homework. Par-
ents of college-bound kids
might think an e-reader would
make the ideal gift, saving kids
the trouble of lugging all those
books around campus. How-
ever, parents should do their
homework before making any
such purchases. Thats because
not all textbooks are available
as e-books, and kids might end
up having to buy hard copies of
their textbooks anyway. Before
kids head off to college, exam-
ine their first semester schedule
and then look online for each
class corresponding syllabus. If
most of their required textbooks
are available as e-books, then
an e-reader might make a great
gift. If not, think of something
else.
Dont make the bottom line
the determining factor.
Whether a student is in grade
school, high school or college,
his or her school supplies tend
to undergo more than their fair
share of wear and tear. So par-
ents looking to save on school
supplies should consider that
when shopping. Though the
less expensive backpack might
seem more affordable, make
sure it can withstand the test of
time and all the wear and tear
that comes with being a stu-
dents backpack. If not, it will
likely need to be replaced be-
fore the school year is out,
which can end up costing more
money in the long run.
Recycle school supplies.
School supplies can be recy-
cled. At the end of each semes-
ter or school year, perform an
inventory of existing school
supplies. If last semesters note-
books were hardly used, theres
no need to buy new ones for
the new semester. Similarly,
parents who have a couple of
students in their household
can embrace hand-me-down
school supplies just like they
do with clothes. If one child
finishes the school year, but
didnt quite use up all of their
supplies, save those supplies for
the day when their younger
siblings end up in the same
class.
