Learning Inputs

Communication is a vital part of human existence. Without communication, life is

miserable and boring. In the present times, communication could be in the form of print,
broadcast or new media.

Print media refers to the more traditional platforms of communication that are
tangible and have undergone printing. It comes in the most popular forms such as
books, newspapers and magazines; journals, pamphlets, brochures and any other
reading materials.
 Books more often than not, are reference materials used for academic
purposes but they also come in the form of novels, historical and biblical
manuscripts, prose and poem compilations, short stories and essay books
among others.
 Newspapers on the other hand, are either in the form of broadsheets or
tabloid and could be further distinguished through its scope: local or national
coverage. Alternative forms of newspaper come in the form of campus,
community or regional papers. Newspaper forms may be different but its
primary goal of delivering latest information and current events to public
remain across its various forms.
 Magazines just like its other printed contemporaries are published monthly,
quarterly or annually catering to specific areas of interest like fashion, home,
technology, business, entertainment, politics, sports, world news and others.

Broadcast media, are the communication platforms described through its capability
of distributing audio and video content to a wide array of audiences. Broadcast
media comes in the form of radio and television.
 Distribution of broadcast content are through analog, telephone and satellite
methods. Radio refers to the communication device that allows transfer
and detection of signals through air. Most often than not, radio is

considered to be the "dying medium," due to its poor popularity among the
different medium of communication.
 TV a communication medium which is capable of transmitting and receiving
images accompanied by sounds. The word television has Latin and Greek
origin. It came from the word "tele" which means far and Greek word
"visio" which means to see, perceive, look or view. Thus, when combined,
television means "far sight".

New media, the latest form of mass media is described through its forms and
technology usage such as: computers, internet, digital devices, video and
online games, web and search engines, social media and networking,
digital information, telecommunication, mobile telecommunication. New
media is characterized as fast, interactive, manipulated and addictive.
Internet and social media are the most common types of new media since they
are considered to be the widely used platforms.
 Internet allows an individual to access information and resources through its
various knowledge databases and connect to the world through e-mails, news
groups and file sharing.
 Social media is composed of computer mediated tools allowing individuals to
communicate and share information, pictures, events, videos with other people.
Social media most often than not is known to be social networking and classified
through the platform being used such as: Facebook, Twitter, YouTube,
Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest and Tumblr among others.

E. Discussing new concepts and practicing new skills #2

 Print, broadcast and new media can be further differentiated using the various
categories: message type, language, structure, audience and reachability.
 Message type refers to the unit of the communication being delivered.
 For printed materials, the messages are in the form of words, phrases,
sentences or paragraphs organized toward a certain thought or topic.
 Broadcast media on the other hand, comes in verbal, aural and visual
content (spoken words, languages, verbal symbols, pictures, videos, graphic
designs, etc.)
 New media are in document forms composed of electronic texts, hypertexts,
photos and videos which can only be read using electronic devices.
 Language on the other hand pertains to a systematized code, established long ago,
used or shared by a group of people, and is handed over through time.
 Print media uses technical and passive language.
 Broadcast media utilizes technical, active and conversational language.
 New media employed less formal and conversational shorter language with
jargons and abbreviations acceptable in certain portals or websites.

 Structure is the arrangement of information in a specific medium. Print and

broadcast media's information structure varies from organization to organization.

 Audience pertains to the receiver of the message, their classifications and

backgrounds. Classification of audiences may be determined through educational and
cultural backgrounds, religious affiliation and socio-economic status.

 Reachability refers to the scope of the communication platform.

 Print media's reach is limited especially in some areas where transportation is
challenging (mountainous and rocky locations).
 Broadcast media offers a wider national audience reach for as long as there
are radio transistors or TV sets that can receive signals, broadcast content
could be enjoyed and consumed.
 Internet just like broadcast media offers a wider reach compared to print
media, though the reachability depends on the internet connection and its
speed. If the connection is excellent one could access the internet and
indulge in its numerous services. But with poor connection, one could find it
useless and non-sense.
