Max Shear Stress (MSS) theory :

Tresca criterion
Assumes that yielding occurs whenever the maximum shear stress
reaches the value it has when yielding occurs in the tensile test.

Ex : combined stresses
A ship propeller of 60 kN weight is carried by a shaft of 22 cm diameter and
overhangs the supporting bracket by 44 cm. The propeller receives 2985 kW
at a speed of 300 rpm. If the propeller thrust is 148 kN, calculate the
principal stresses and maximum shear stress at a point E on the surface of
shaft. The point E is at the bottom of shaft. Neglect the inertia forces.

Home assignment:
A trolley on a ropeway is supported by two bent arms, as shown in Fig. Each
arm is offset by the distance b = 180 mm from the line of action of the
weight force W. The allowable stresses in the arms are 100 MPa in tension
and 50 MPa in shear.
If the loaded trolley weighs 12 kN, what is the minimum diameter d of the
arms?
