Chloroform is a clear, colorless,
and volatile liquid with a pleasant,
sweet odor
• Chloroform is:
–slightly soluble in water
–soluble in alcohol, ether, acetone, benzene,
and petroleum ether
half as dense as water and of about the
same viscosity
has a heavy, burning sweetness of taste
(about 40x as sweet as cane sugar)
almost immiscible in water,
freely miscible with organic solvents
