Lesson: Book Introduction

Due to some of it's characteristics, Coraline could be considered a


fairy tale, some of a fairy tale's elements are:
Highly imaginative story that often features magical elements
and creatures such as witches, ogres, and talking animals.
The "hero" or "heroine" often must complete a task in order to
win a treasure or break an evil spell.
Things often happen in groups of three

In order to understand the story there are a few concepts we

Alternate reality: In fiction, an alternate reality is a world or setting
that is similar to the real world but with key differences. Within the
alternate reality, rules may be different and characters may have
supernatural powers.

Imagery: Imagery consists of words and phrases that help the


reader imagine how things look, feel, smell, sound, and taste.

Suspense: Suspense is a feeling of growing tension and


excitement. Suspense makes a reader curious about the outcome
of a story or an event within a story.

Foreshadowing: This occurs when a writer provides hints that


suggest future events in a story. Foreshadowing creates suspense
and makes readers eager to find out what will happen.
