Poem Comparison

Group 1

The speakers' moods differ in the two poems, even though both speakers mention
signs of acceptance for winter at the end. First, the speaker of How still, how
happy! claimed that she prefers summer as a symbol of happiness and dislikes
winter as a symbol of sadness, but she eventually accepted that she now embraces
winter as well, which can be a sign that his sadness, trauma, or negative feeling
has already been healed enough by time because she can get over it and think of
it as one of the lessons in his life that he can learn from. The speaker of Wood in
Winter, on the other hand, may accept the idea of winter at the end of his poem
as well, but because he said that his action was walking, it can be interpreted that
he was still not over his winter (trouble). And as he said that his ear has grown
familiar with the winter song, it shows that his journey of healing is progressing
(not done yet to fully familiar but growing).
The speakers used a variety of poetic devices in these two poems. First, visual
imagery depicting scenes from winter and summer, as well as the changing of the
seasons. Second, personification is used several times to illustrate natural
movements through human action. Finally, anaphora is used in both poems to
repeat the pattern and highlight the main topic.
