A. PREPARATION

a. Opening Prayer
Class let’s all stand,
Before we start, Erika please lead the prayer. “Heavenly Father, we praise you Lord, we thank
you Lord for this beautiful day, give peace our
minds and hearts and let us be happy with all
moments, all we ask in Jesus Name, Our Lord,
Amen.”
Good morning class, Praise be Jesus and Mary! Now and forever
Amen.
b. Energizer
Now class, do you know the song “Its
Mathematics time?” No ma’am!
Ok, for those who don’t know the song, I will
teach you. Now, I’ll sing it first before you
followed. Yes ma’am
“It’s Mathematics Time”
It’s mathematics time!
It’s mathematics time
Let us all get ready now
Its mathematics time
“It’s Mathematics Time”
Ok now, all together! It’s mathematics time!

And that’s it, now, before you may sit, please

pick up some pieces of papers under your chair
and inline your chairs properly.

You may now sit.

c. Checking of Attendance
let’s check your attendance first, is everybody
present today? Yes ma’am
Very good!
d. Assignment
now, do we have any assignment? None ma’am

e. Imposing Rules
Okay class, before I will start our discussion,
I would like to imposed my rules in this class.
First, if someone is talking in front please
listen very carefully and quietly, you can talk
freely if it is your turn. Second, raise your
hand if you are going to answer. And lastly,
participate and enjoy the class.
Is that clear? Yes ma’am

f. Review

Okay class, who can still remember what was

our last lesson?
Yes? Erika? We discussed about PEMDAS ma’am

Okay very good! Last meeting, we discussed

about PEMDAS.
Now, what do you mean by PEMDAS? Ma’am, its Parenthesis, Exponent,
Yes? Regin? Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction.

That is correct! We solve multi operation

expressions by following the operation order of
parenthesis, Exponent, Multiplication, Division,
addition and Subtraction.

Any questions or clarifications? None ma’am.

Very good! Now let’s move on. Yes ma’am!

g. Motivation/Activity

Now, I have here an activity entitled “Who Am

I?”, with a group of two, guess the word out of
the given numbers.

Okay, by the way, how many letters are in the

English Alphabet? 26 ma’am
Okay very good! now class, I am basing these
numbers to the placement of letters in the 26
letters of English Alphabet.

Mechanics: You are going to find out the

hidden word out of the given numbers.
I’ll give you cut letters for you to choose the
right letter to the corresponding numbers and
paste it in the given space.

Is it clear? Yes ma’am

__ ____________________________ S U B S T I T U T I O N
19 21 2 19 20 9 20 21 20 9 15 14 19 21 2 19 20 9 20 21 20 9 15 14

Very good! Now, what is the hidden word for Substitution ma’am
group 1?
Now, where do you usually hear the word In games like basketball ma’am
substitution?
Very good!
How about the second word? Expression ma’am

That’s right, and where can you usually see In our faces ma’am
expressions?

Yes! Sometimes we have a smiley face, sad

faces, it depends in our mood swings, right? Ye ma’am

Very good! And that is how you define these

words.

Now, did you know class that these words have

another meaning in mathematics? No ma’am

Since you don’t have any idea, so, be with me

today as I will discussed to you on how to
evaluate the “Algebraic Expression”

B. PRESENTATION

Now class, since our topic is about evaluating

algebraic expressions, did you know what is
algebraic expression? No ma’am
Okay here is the definition.

Algebraic Expression – or variable expression is

an expression that includes at least one variable.

By the way what is variable class?

Yes? Variable is a letter used to represent one or
Very good! Now, can you give me an example more numbers ma’am.
of a variable?
Yes? X ma’am
Okay very good, remember class that any letter
can be represent as a variable.
Is that clear?
Yes ma’am
Now, how about the word expression? Did you
know what is expression in mathematics?
No ma’am
Now, Expression is consisted of numbers,
variables and operations.
It is not how your face looks like every
mathematics period.

Okay now, can someone give me an example of

an algebraic expression? Since it must have at
least one variable in an expression.
X+2 ma’am
Yes? You’re right, very good!
Another?
Very good! 2x ma’am
Now, do you consider x 2+ x+2 as an algebraic
expression?
Okay very good everyone. Yes ma’am
Take note class that, it is called an algebraic
expression with at least one variable in the given
expressions. And off course having two or more
variables in an expression is an algebraic
expression.
Is that clear?
Very good! Yes ma’am

Now, let’s proceed to evaluate algebraic

expressions.
To evaluate algebraic expressions, you are
going to? Everybody read?
Substitute a number for each variable, perform
the operations, and simplify the result, if
So, you are going to substitute the given value necessary.
of the variable to the given algebraic expressions.

Let’s do this example, for more understanding.

Evaluate the Algebraic Expression 6x2+3 when

a. x=0
b. x=-2
c. x=1/2

for letter a, how do we evaluate?

What should we do first?

We substitute the given value of x in the given

equation.
Now let’s try, since x=0, so:
6(0)2+3

After that, we will perform the indicated

operations.
Since we got here a multi operation equation,
what should we do?
We need to apply the rules of PEMDAS ma’am.
Very good! Can someone show us how to use
PEMDAS at this problem? Yes Mia?
6(0)2+3=
That’s correct! Everybody let’s do the Right 6(0) +3=
Clap! 0 + 3 =3
(student’s do as told)
Now for letter b, x=-2
Who would like to try following the same
steps? For step one, Lyca. A student will be called to answer.
Step 1.
6x2+3=
For step 2, Stephany. 6(-2)2+3=
Step 2.
6(4) +3=
Very good! I know you are all good in math! 24 + 3 =27

And for the last example, x=1/2

Show as the step 1, Aiko
Step 1.
6x2+3=
Step 2, Cath 6(1/2)2+3=
Step 2.
6(1/4) +3=
6/4+3=
Following the rules in adding dissimilar
That’s all correct! fractions.
6/4+12/4=18/4 or 9/2
Now class, in evaluating algebraic expressions,
what are the steps that we need to follow?
1. Substitute the given value to the variable
Very good. 2. Simplify if it is necessary and perform the
indicated operation by following the rules of
PEMDAS.
Activity
Okay class, I have here a lucky box, each of you
will get one of the rolled paper.
(Each student will get one rolled paper inside
Do not open it yet! Now raise all the rolled the box)
papers!
Now, some papers are blank but there are five
lucky papers among that.
Now, Everybody open!

Okay, who got the five lucky papers?

Congratulations! Now come here in front and
write what is on your paper on the board Erika, Kier, Rushel, Hannah, and Kareen

Evaluate: (Students do as told)

1. 15x when x= 4
2. 1.6-g when g= 1.2
24
3. when f=8
f
4. x +y when x=11 and y= 6
3
5. x 2 when x=
4

Now class, are you happy because you got the

blank papers? (Talking to those who got blank
papers) Yes ma’am

Okay! Erika call someone to solve the algebraic

expression you’ve written, as well as Kier, and Erika: Messy ma’am
also the rest three Kier: Moda ma’am
Rushel: Rigen ma’am
Okay! The five missioned name please here in Hannah: Mayen ma’am
front and solve the following. Kareen: Warren ma’am

1. 15(4)= 60
2. 1.6−1.2=0.4
24
3. =3
Now let’s check their answers 8
4. 11+6=17
That’s all correct, let’s give them You’re Right 3
2

Clap 5. ( ) =
4 16

C. APPLICATION (Students do as told)

Activity
Okay class, do you want to play a game?
This game entitled “the quiz show”

Mechanics:
The group who got the higher score will have a
price after the class.
I will group you into 4 groups and each group
will be given a cardboard and chalk for you to
write your answer of the following algebraic
expressions to evaluate. 10 seconds will be given
for you to answer and afterwards will raise your
cardboard with your answers.
Is that clear?
Are you all ready? Yes ma’am
Yes ma’am
Direction: Evaluate the following algebraic
expressions showed by the flashcards when x = 3.

1. 2x +2 1. 8
2. x 2+ x 2. 12
3. 5x - 3 3. 12
30 4. 10
4.
x 5. 8
5. x 2−x +2

Congratulations to the winning group, please

claim your prize after the discussion, everybody (Student’s do as told)
let’s do the victory clap! Now, this is how you do
it

D. GENERALIZATION
Again class, what is our topic this morning? Evaluating Algebraic Expression ma’am.

And what are the steps that we are going to

follow in order to evaluate Algebraic Expressions?
1. Substitute the given value to the variable
First? 2. Simplify if it is necessary and perform the
Second? indicated operation by following the rules of
PEMDAS.
Very good everyone!
E. VALUING
Okay now, going back with our first activity,
from the word substitution. If you are going to
substitute the value of someone into numbers 0-
10, how much is it and why? (Specify that
someone. Ex. Mother)
Ma’am, if I could substitute the value of my
Anyone? Yes? parents into numbers, I will choose none of the
given because for me, there is no such numbers
that can count their value for me. They are the
most valuable thing that money can’t afford.

Okay, very good Justine!

You’re right, parents are unchangeable, nothing
can substitute them, remember class to value
your parents more than anything. Agree?
Yes ma’am!
Now class, sometimes substitution is not good,
we should be careful always in choosing a
substitute to your missing piece, we don’t know if
that chosen one will ruin us or it brings good to
us because sometimes it is good enough to leave
what is really meant to be and just move on and
continue the life.

F. EVALUATION

Class, get a ½ sheet of paper and complete the

table by evaluating the given expression.
a.
X X2+7x+12 a.
