Overview:
In real life, we might encounter many problems. To solve these problems, we may have a series of questions
that can be answered by statistics, and some are not.
A statistical question is one that can be answered by collecting data that varies from each other and should have
different answers.
If someone will ask you this question: How old are you? or What is your name? These questions cannot be
answered statistically because it has an exact answer but if the question are: How old are the students in this
classroom? or What are the favorite colors of students in these class? This question can be answered statistically
because it has different answers and can be drawn through collecting, organizing, analyzing, interpreting, and
presenting data.
Answers from statistics are called DATA which are classified into two:
1. Quantitative Data is when every value in the set are numbers such as 1, 2, 3, 4….
2. Qualitative Data can be taken as non– numerical values such as colors, labels, and others. Some examples are
small, medium, large, tall, big, red, orange and others.
Data are units of information, often numeric, recorded and used for the purpose of analysis.
Problems that can be solved by statistics are statistical questions that can be answered by collecting variable
data (data values are not the same). Statistics is the study of variability (changes/different data). You need to be able to
identify and pose questions and problems that can be answered by data that vary. Statistical questions are questions that
have a different answer. The answer to this question/problem is a range, percent, or an average.
The following examples are presented for better understanding between statistical questions and those that are
not.
EXAMPLE 1
Answer: NOT STATISTICAL QUESTION
- How many days are there in March?
(The answer is only a single number or answer.)
EXAMPLE 2
