COPE TO SURVIVE

By: ARA JEAN MULLET

The Philippines is prone to natural disaster. Typhoon (Hurricane) was one of a severe
form of natural disaster in the country that literally cause a huge impact to the people, and that
impose a huge economic loss, and causalities on society.

Each time when an adversity occur, masses of school students were seemingly affected
by a different and severe way. And with that, students are more vulnerable compared with the
elder during a catastrophe. In the study of Yang et. al, (2021) they found out that the students
faced a high risk of post-traumatic stress disorder (PSTD), depression, and other health
problems after typhoon. Furthermore, Tang et. al, (2021) the study also found that PSTD has a
direct influence on the suicide risk of adolescent who have experience typhoons. Although the
students are highly aware of the typhoon outbreak, they do not have an obligatory discreet
action.

Moreover, in the studies conducted by (Adam et. al, and Miceli et. al,) they identified
that there is a positive relationship between risk understanding and an effective response of
the public. Therefore, in order to reduce the negative impacts of typhoons, students should
develop and understand more about the disaster risk and should investigate typhoons to boost
their prevention and mitigation efforts.

On the last December 2021, the typhoon Rai known as “Odette” smashed through the
southern region of the Philippines and has devastated the livelihood of the farmers, fishing
community, and tourism operations and even the learnings of the students. But despite of the
tangible devastation of Super Typhoon Rai, the intellect of the Filipinos/ students in being
resilience in such destructive situation remains. Students should really learn to possess their
own coping mechanism to survive, for them to cope and get rid in such tremendous disaster.

In addition to this, the Senior High Students of Balite National High School conducted a
research entitled “PAGBANGON SA BAGYO: Coping Mechanism of the student affected by Super
Typhoon Rai” and based on the information gathered during their interview they come up to
conclusion that students coping mechanism are having Faith with the Almighty Father, Familial
Support/Bayanihan, Sharp-mindedness, and being optimistic.

To sum up, we may face a lot of storms as days go by but let us remind ourselves that
God doesn’t give us what we can handle instead God helps us handle what we are given.
Remember also the verse of Isaiah 43:2, “God will carry us to the storm”.
THE BOON IN EDUCATION SYSTEM

By: ARA JEAN B. MULLET

Stakeholder in education are people, and we know people are the hearts of education
system. The pursuant to Republic Act (RA) No. 9155 known as the Governance of Basic
Education Act of 2001, the Department of Education issues the implementing Guidelines on the
Establishment of School Governance Council (SGC). This policy aims to recognize and
strengthen the role of school stakeholder, alongside Local Government Units (LGUs), as
partners in providing learners accessible and quality education, upholding children’s rights, and
promoting respect and well-being in the learning environment to ensure effective education
service delivery.

Moreover, the Balite National High School are grateful to its stakeholder who vested
interest in the success and welfare of school. In the article of Getting clearer: stakeholders at
the Hearts of education it states that “In stakeholder it lies the resources, information,
opportunities, the love, care, and wisdom needed to support the goals of the education system-
creating the conditions for student to thrive now in the future”

To give an instance, honorable Val P. Pinat the mayor of Municipality of Anao-aon San
Francisco, gives donation for the construction of the covered court in school. Wherein, Balite
National High School teaching staffs and learners are delighted and humbly accepted his
donation.

In addition, the people behind this prestigious school are the stakeholders who are
willingly able to help the academe to be more accessible to the learners. Hence, the
collaboration or support of all the stakeholders yielded to success and can now assess the
learners needs and can make sure that learners can study more comfortably within the
academe.
