Field Study 1

The School Environment

SPARK Your Interest

This Episode 1 provides an opportunity for students to examine and reflect on a school environment that
promotes learning and development.

TARGET Your Intended Learning Outcome

 At the end of this Episode, I must be able to determine the characteristics of a school environment that is
safe, secure, and is supportive of learning (PPST 2.1.1)

REVISIT the Learning Essential

1. A physical environment conductive for learning is one that has consistent practices that:
 Keep the school safe, clean, orderly and free from distraction;
 Maintain facilities that provide challenging activities; and
 Address the physical, social and psychological needs of the students.

2. Display boards can be powerful in communicating information about the learning environment. They help in
building and establishing the school culture. These boards become one way for everyone to learn about the
vision-mission, goals, and values that the school upholds.

3. As a basic part of the school’s visual environment, display board have four general purpose:

 Decorative- they offer visual stimulation and appeal to aesthetic. They set the social and psychological
atmosphere of the school.
 Motivational- they encourage students to perform better and have greater confidence. An example would
be the display students’ outputs that show that each output is recognized and valued. The bulletin boards
help celebrate the learners’ growth and progress
 Informational- they are used as strategy to readily disseminate information.
 Instructional- they move students to respond and participate through interactive displays. They get students
to think about and communicate their learning.

4. The set of criteria for evaluating bulletin board display includes effective communication, attractiveness,
balance, unity, interactivity, legibility, correctness, and durability

Analyze
How do the school campus and the classroom in particular impact the learning of the students going to school?
What are your conclusions?

The school really establish name with quality education in district of Pampanga. When we first arrive in the field the
atmosphere of the school establishes a respectable vibe not only because of the staffs but also the building design.
The charisma of the school gives us appearance of a well-disciplined student. Almost of the students needs where
provided and also the type of the students are in are also capable of providing their needs, because of this I think the
only thing will matter inside the schools was the impact of the staffs and teachers quality of service.

How does this relate to your knowledge of child and adolescent development/how does this relate to your
knowledge of facilitating learning?

Because of child developments theory we were equipped with the outcomes of each students’ actions regarding to
their ages. Through this we can figure it out on how to communicate and interreact to each student. But I can’t den
that students now a days are changing and developing so new approach must be consider in the future.

REFLECT
1. Would you like to teach in the school environment you just observed? Why? Why not?
Yes, I would like to teach on the school we were deployed with. Since it is private school students are very
capable of achieving resources which will help them to be more productive. I want to maximize the
resources that we have to give a quality output of their skills and knowledge, along with my skills and
knowledge about film making and photography I think I can really teach them to do a quality films promoting
not only education but their capabilities and skills in different aspect which schools must exposed their
learners to discover their selves, because believe it or not, not all students excel in academics.

2. What kind of school campus is conductive to learning?

A campus that is student friendly, wherein learners can free express their selves inside the community and
not only those who are academically good receives special treatment.

3. What kind of classroom is classroom is conductive to learning?

A classroom that scope all types of learning and not only exercise paper and pen method, but consider each
students personality.

4. In the future, how can you accomplish your answer in number 3?

By knowing your student personality, you can identify their needs and align your ways on their capability.

5. Write your additional learning and insight here.

In teaching it is important not only your relationship with your students but also with you colleague, in the
field of teaching we must be teachable for us to move forward.

Activity 1.2 Observing bulletin board displays

Resource Teacher: _______________________ Teacher’s Signature _____________School ___________

Grade/Year Level: ________________________ Subject Area__________________ Date_____________

The display board, or what we more commonly refer to as bulletin board, is one of the most readily available
more versatile learning resources.

To achieve the Intended Learning Outcomes, work your way through these steps: 1. Examine for bulletin
board display. Include samples of those formal at the entrance, lobby, hallway and classroom 2. Pick one and
evaluate the display. 3. Propose enhancement to make the display more effective.

OBSERVE

As you look around and examine the board displays, use observation guide and forms provided for you to document
your observations.

An Observation Guide for BOARD DISPLAY

Read the following carefully before you observe.

1. Go around the school and examine the board display. How many board display do you see?

2. Where are the display boards found? Are they in places where target viewers can see them?

3. What are the display about? What key message do they convey? What image and colors do you see? How
are the pieces of information and images arranged?

4. What materials were used in making the display? Are borders used?

5. Do you notice some errors? (misspelled words, grammar inconsistencies and the like)

6. Are the message clear and easily understood?

7. Think about what got your attention. Why did it get your attention?

8. Take a photo of the display boards (if allowed).

Based on the question on the observation guide, write your observation report:
Observation REPORT
(You may paste picture of the board displays here.)

As we inspect each bulletin board inside the school, ths is the the most creative and full of effort
bulletin board I saw, although the design was very simple composing of only parpers but the content
was full of hard works that not every person are capable to do. We can see how passionate are those
artist who draw those arts in the board and those artist are really worthy of exposure not only for them
to showacase their talents but for others to inspire those who are also has passion in art.

For a bulletin boar this is good enough, but it has much great potential to improve like in composition
of placing of items inside needs to properly align, the design can be flashier knowing that the students
have skills and it can also add quotes regarding art.
From among the board display that you saw, pick the one that you got most interested in.

Evaluate it using the evaluation form below.

Recommendations or Suggestion for Improvement

I recommend that to keep the board active as much as possible and not only treat as a design inside the
campus, improve the design and context of the board. Put name of the artist along with their drawings.

ANALYZE

What do you think was the purpose of the board?

The purpose of the board is to engage to each student, to communicate but also to interact them by the use of
words and illustration to reach them.

Did the board display deign reflect the likes/interests of its target audience? Why? Why not?

Yes, because the board content is mostly about performance and not just for academic purposes, it is design to
reach out every student even those who doesn’t have skills they can skill view the board because of the entertaining
output of the students.

Was the language used clear and simple for the target audience to understand? Why? Why not?

For the labels it used English but for the artwork it can be universal. Because arts and crafts are not only limited by
language. Sometimes it is about cultural difference, I believe that art doesn’t limited by text some are pure
illustrations.

Was the board display effective? Why? Why not?

Yes, it is effective because board display is passive and anyone can view it without any permission. It gives every
student change to witness some works or announcement and even past events in which some missed. Board are also
teachers to is passively teaching those who views.

What suggestion can you make?

Each school are capable of doing board, but the only thing I can suggest is that to keep them active and consistent.
Boards are not just designing in schools. It is also reaching students.
Based on your suggestion, purpose an enhanced version of the display board. Use the form below.
