CASE STUDY

I. The discrimination against a transgender woman who was barred from using a
women’s comfort room in a mall in Quezon City is raising calls for the passage of
the Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, and Gender Expression (SOGIE)
Equality Bill.

II. The janitress who prevented Diez from using the women’s restroom. Diaz
insisted that she use the men's restroom, then she was isolated from the other
shoppers in a room that had swinging doors. The janitress then said: "May utin
ka pa rin. Tandaan mo 'yan". That’s why she can’t enter the women’s restroom.
She said that she will file a case against Diez.

III. Gretchen Diez was the transgender who was dragged, harassed, and arrested
after entering a Cubao mall toilet. Gretchen just needed to pee. She was
deprived from her rights of the members of the LGBT+ community, particularly
transgender people’s choice of which restroom to use.

IV. Gender inequality is a result of the persistent discrimination of one group of people
based upon gender and it manifests itself differently according to race, culture,
politics, country, and economic situation. Gender inequality and discrimination are
argued to cause and perpetuate poverty and vulnerability in society as a whole.
We can state that Gender inequality also means social inequality because some
people are deprived from their rights, just like the LGBTQ community. Most of the
time they are being discriminated and insulted because some people cannot
accept them and they treat them like they don’t belong to the rest of the
community.
