09 WATER SUPPLY FACILITIES

09.01 General

Iron and steel plant is as such a heat intensive

process wherein a considerable quantity of cooling
water is required for control of metallurgical
processes as well as for dissipation of unutilized
heat. In order to conserve precious fresh water,
water economy has been an underlying criterion for
selection of plant and equipment. In order to further
economize on fresh water demand, closed circuit
water re-circulation systems have been planned to
effect extensive recycling and reuse of return water
from plant processes. Clarified water from surface
water will be used in the secondary side of plate
heat exchangers for cooling of process water in the
primary side and also for direct cooling circuits.
Primary side water will be re-circulated in closed
circuits.
Evaporative cooling towers will be provided for
cooling clarified water re-circulating in the
secondary circuits and direct cooling circuits.
Process water losses will be compensated by adding
make-up water of respective qualities.

09.02 Requirement of water

Estimated requirement of water for various plant

units and process is indicated in table-09.01.

09.03 Availability of water

Make up water will be available from Desalination

plant, provided by ministry of housing, electricity
and water. A water treatment plant shall be
installed for cooling, filtering and reuse of cooling
water.
