For every tonne of steel produced, about 3 tonnes of raw materials are consumed, so transportation costs are important when identifying raw material sources. The raw materials must also meet quality standards required by the steelmaking process and equipment. This chapter studies raw material sources for a steel plant based on its capacity, location, and technological requirements. The major raw materials needed for the plant's 100% scrap-based steelmaking process are scrap, ferro-alloys, and sponge iron, and the chapter details the annual requirements, specifications, proposed sources, and transport modes for these materials.

For every tonne of steel produced in an integrated
steel plant about 3 tonnes of raw materials are consumed. Transportation cost of raw materials becomes, therefore, a very important consideration while identifying the raw material source with respect to the location of the steel plant. Further, the raw materials must fulfill the quality requirements demanded by process, equipment and technological parameters. Taking into consideration the capacities of the steel plant, its location and technological quality requirements, a study of raw material sources has been presented in this chapter.
06.01.01 Raw material requirement
Since the steel melt shop project is based on 100%
scrap charge-mix, scrap, ferro-alloys & sponge iron(DRI) are the major raw materials required for making steel. The annual requirement of the above major materials and their indicative size specification, proposed sources, and mode of transport.
