Advantages of K-12 Program in the Philippines

Ten years ago, the Philippines was the only nation in the Southeast Asian to offer a merely 10
years of basic education due to its population. When the Philippines has joined its neighbors in adopting
an education system that would give their children greater options on a global scale, the K-12 program
has placed the nation on the right route. By accelerating the mutual recognition of Filipino graduates
and professionals abroad, the K-12 program promotes global competency. The new curriculum offers
three courses for pupils to choose from: academic, technical-vocational-livelihood and sports and arts.
Additionally, it will offer students the chance to participate in immersions, get meaningful exposures to
a range of companies, and gain experience in the field of their choice. Whereas the old curriculum and
linear curriculum, it did not include enough practical applications like the K-12 does.

The K-12 program has many benefits, the majority of which place the Filipino students at the top
of the educational priority list. The Philippines’ K-12 curricula will bring Filipino pupils on pace with
students around the world. This would serve as evidence that funding for education is essential for
achieving economic and social progress on a national scale. Accepting the K-12 system as a curriculum
remains challenging, but with those benefits, it would be less difficult. The curriculum goes beyond that
because it obviously emphasizes advancing the kid’s development and their future.

K-12 program’s benefits:

 Preparedness for tertiary learning

 Readiness to join the workforce
 Skill competency in the global market

Preparedness for Tertiary Learning

Students are expected to graduate at a slightly advanced age than previous grads due to the
adaptation of the K-12 system. According to DepEd, this is advantageous since graduates will be seen as
young adults. As a result, when students start their college education, they will be more capable of
handling a higher level of learning.

Readiness to Join the Workforce

K-12 education can better prepare pupils for the workforce than the previous system. The
advantage of the new curriculum is that it forces every student to be passionate about the workforce
and gives them the freedom to decide themselves. If they have chosen a track other than the academic
track, they may or may not pursue a college program. Students in senior high school need not to worry if
they choose to explore disciplines other than their own because they are able to select courses that can
also help them polish their skills in particular fields in which they are interested.

Skills and Competency in the Global Market

The K-12 system aspires to raise pupils’ math, science, and linguistic ability so they may compete
more effectively on the international labor market. The Department of Education promises that the new
curriculum will provide students with a higher quality education through the strands. By the end of the
curriculum, the K-12 graduates will be ready to become globally competitive and are set to acquire a
spot in the competitive job market. Each track will provide the students enough time to master a field
and increase their talents in that particular industry.
Disadvantages of K-12 program in the Philippines

 While the financial stability of children and their parents to sustain them through two more
years of school is the main negative of K-12 system in the Philippines, it also puts pressure on
Filipino teachers, particularly in public schools
