CHAPTER -1
1.1 INTRODUCTION:- Gear is a cylindrical wheel tooth cut that meshed with another gear for
transmitting power from one shaft to another, of which both rotate to opposite directions during
motion. Gear can also be defined as a rotational toothed wheel that is attached to a shaft. Gears are
typically classified to spur, helical, bevel, double helical, hypoid, crown, pinion and rack, epicyclical,
worm gears, etc. In the modern engineering systems, they are practically applied in tremendous
industries; from a tiny wristwatches to huge machinery equipment, such as; rolling, automobile,
aerospace industry, transmitting machinery, hoisting and marine engines.

Spur gear is the simplest type of gear used for transmitting power because of its straight teeth cut on
the rim parallel to the axis of rotation. It is the most common and cost-effectiveness type of gear. Spur
gear is used in oscillating sprinklers, electric screwdrivers, windup alarm clocks, clothe dryers and
washing machines (Sainath). The contact between two teeth follows the line of action. The driving
wheel begins at the tooth root and moves towards the top, while the following wheel moving reversely
from top to root, as shown in Fig. 1. When a Contact is placed between the root and the pitch circle of
the driving wheel in the first half of the meshing, the friction force moved towards the root of the
driving tooth and the rotation counteracts. When the contacted teeth passed through pitch circle, the
friction force alters direction and acts to the rolling motion. Also, this direction reverses to the followed
teeth. Thus, relative motion is fixed across the contact width but is also changed during the interaction.

2.1 LITERATURE SURVEY

• Mahebub Vohra et al. (2014) explained the Metallic material Cast iron and Non Metallic
material Nylon are for spur gear. The stress analysis of the lathe machine headstock gear box
is analyzed by finite element analysis (FEA) and ANSYS. They got the theoretical results are
about to same with minor differences.

• Sangamesh Herakal et al. (2014) investigated the dynamic analysis of natural frequency of
spur gear FEA and MATLAB. The results of FEA and MATLAB analysis are compared and
they found that the natural frequency is increases with increase in fiber orientation.

• Siva Prasad et al. (2012) analyzed design of spur gear and proposed a gear for sugarcane juice
machine. They created a model in PRO-E and analyzed in ANSYS10.0. From the analysis they
found the Nylon gear is suitable for the application of sugarcane juice machine under limited
load condition compared with cast iron spur gear.

• N. Lenin Rakesh et al. (2013) investigated a spur gear is modeled using a modeling software
Pro-E and using software ANSYS. The theoretical stresses of both bending and contact stress
is found manually and then analyzed in ANSYS software. The readings are shown in the tabular
column. It is found that comparing with manual results; results are approximate or closer to it.

• Moya, et al. (2007) they have performed a theoretical analysis of aprocedure to determine the
Lewis Factor and also performed the contact analysis of spur gears to find the stress distribution
between gear teeth. [5]

CHAPTER -3

3.1 PROBLEM DEFINITION:- A gear or "gear wheel" is a part of a spinning machine with cut teeth
or cogs that mesh with another toothed part to transmit electricity. Two or more tandemoperated gears
are called a transmission and via a gear ratio, create mechanical advantages and can therefore be
considered a simple machine. In this project report on stress analysis of spur gears, gears are mainly
used in the mechanical sector for power transmission. In this project, spur gear made of cast iron is
regarded as the traditional model. The traditional model is optimized and the study is done with high
modulus content from carbon fiber. Boundary constraints are established and the overall model
deformation is measured and the results are tabulated

3.2 OBJECTIVE:-

• Geometry construction using CATIA V5

• Generation of mesh using ANSYS Workbench.
• The stress analysis of spur gear was done by using ANSYS software.
• To compare the conventional gear material with the carbon fibre material for different boundary
conditions.

CHAPTER -4

4.1 METHODOLOGYL:-

• Creating of geometry using CATIA software.

• After construction of geometry, export that into ANSYS Workbench.

• Mesh generation.

• Obtaining the stress analysis using ansys

• compare the conventional gear material with the carbon fibre material for different boundary

conditions.

CHAPTER -5
5.1 POSSIBLE OUTCOMES:-

• Calculation of Total deformation, Equivalent Elastic Strain, Equivalent stress of both cast iron &
carbon fiber.

• We can compare the conventional gear material with the carbon fibre material

• The conventional model is optimized with carbon fiber high modulus material and the analysis is
carried out. Boundary constraints are defined and the total deformations for model are calculated
