(5) EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The goal of this research project is to use broccoli and aloe vera as a soap to treat skin

issues and to regain our self-esteem. Since broccoli and aloe vera is rich in different types of

vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, the use and outcome of the product will be beneficial for

the consumer. It is simple to do because the procedure is simple and what you require is easily

accessible.

Researchers prove that broccoli and aloe vera is safe and beneficial to our skin due to

their different contents and nutrients. The soap is very organic and has no chemical added to

its ingredients, so it is very safe for us to use it. The soap is prepared by grinding the broccoli

and aloe vera and adding it to the soap base. It also contains additional ingredients for a much

better outcome.

(6) INTRODUCTION
(6.1) RATIONALE

Acne is a common skin condition that occurs when the hair follicles beneath the skin

become clogged. Sebum (oil that keeps skin from drying out) and dead skin cells clog pores,

causing outbreaks of lesions known as pimples or zits. (Niams, 2020) They have the

appearance of a whitehead with a red ring around it. Usually, the bump is filled with white or

yellow pus. Picking or squeezing pustules is not recommended. Picking at the skin can result

in scars or dark spots. (Gardner, 2022) It is most common during puberty, when the sebaceous

glands become active, but it can occur at any age. It is not harmful, but it can cause skin

scarring. The glands produce oil and are stimulated by male hormones produced by both male

and female adrenal glands. It is the most common skin condition in the United States, affecting

up to 50 million people each year. Acne affects at least 85 percent of Americans between the

ages of 12 and 24. It usually appears on the face, shoulders, back, neck, chest, and upper arms.

(Brazier, 2017)

Because acne appears mostly on our faces and bodies, it can have a negative impact

on some people's self-esteem. Acne patients have stated in studies that their skin makes them

feel unattractive, embarrassed, or self-conscious. Because they are afraid of being bullied in

public, some teenagers may avoid socializing with others. Bullying can lead to a decrease in

self-esteem. It can make teenagers feel so depressed that they want to be alone. (Gieler U, et

al. 2008)

Acne can undoubtedly cause emotional distress. Acne and acne scars on your face and

other visible body parts can lower your self-esteem and confidence, and they can even

contribute to anxiety or depression. Anxiety and acne are also linked. Patients suffering from

acne are nearly three times more likely to experience moderate to severe anxiety. Anxiety, like
depression, affects both adolescents and adults with acne, but seems to be more prevalent in

adults. (Robinson, 2020)

To address this problem, researchers says that broccoli and aloe vera is one of the

best solutions in treating skin problems such as acne and others. This healthy green veggie is a

miracle elixir for all those dealing with skin concerns such as premature ageing, dull skin and

acne inflammation. (Habib, 2020)

SIGNIFICANCE

Most of the vital vitamins A, K, C, and B complex are found in broccoli, a member

of the cabbage family. It is not only proven advantageous for the health, but also helps your

skin look younger and healthier because it is rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. This

vibrant green vegetable contains the beneficial vitamin A that treats a variety of skin issues,

including acne, dull skin, inflammation, and premature aging. (Organic Harvest, 2021)

On the other hand, although aloe vera does contain well-researched vitamins and

minerals like zinc and vitamins C and E, several studies stated that aloe vera has no valid proof

that it can be able to treat skin problems on its own, but it may be able to improve the effects

on the skin when combined with other products that is good for treating skin problems.

(Brady, 2022)

From this perspective, broccoli and aloe vera combination is very promising for

treating skin problems. Other than they are good medication for skin problems and has a lot of

benefits to our skin, they are also organic because both has no pesticide residues and does not

contain any harmful chemicals.

Aside from being promising for treating skin problems, they can also be planted in

your own garden or area and are easy-to-grow plants because broccoli takes only 50-60 days
to harvest, while aloe vera takes 3-4 moths to grow roots.

(6.2) SCIENTIFIC BASIS

Broccoli's nutritional value makes it ideal for skin care. Broccoli is a superfood for

many reasons, but one of the most well-known is its ability to improve skin health. Valid

scientific studies have shown that broccoli's botanical benefits promote everything from

youthful appearance to skin cancer prevention. (Graceffo, 2020)

Broccoli contains sulforaphane, which stimulates the production of skin-protective

enzymes and can aid in the repair of damaged skin cells. For example, when Brassica Olarecea

(Broccoli) extract was applied to the skin daily for three days prior to UV exposure, cell

damage was reduced by 37% on average. (drtwlderma, 2021)

Broccoli has numerous skin benefits. These include reducing inflammation,

protecting against UV damage, and promoting collagen synthesis. Moreover, the compounds

in broccoli can lighten skin tone and reduce wrinkles, improving skin appearance. (Shan S,

2022) Aside from the benefits of broccoli to our skin, aloe vera is also a good solution for

treating skin problems.

Aloe is one of the most commonly used and well-known plant names in skin care.

Because of its well-known anti-inflammatory and calming properties, aloe is frequently used

to treat sunburn. (Robin, 2022)

Aloe vera is a common houseplant that is well-known for its skin-healing properties.

When applied to the face, aloe vera can help moisturize the skin. Applying a small amount of

aloe vera to the face on a regular basis can help treat a variety of skin conditions, including

acne, eczema, and sunburn. (Davis, 2020)

Since aloe vera gel is composed of 80% water, it contains a variety of vitamins,
nutrients, and minerals, all of which work to make your skin appear soft and glowing. As a

result, it is completely safe to use every day. (Agarwal, 2019)

(6.3) OBJECTIVES

General:

To produce a soap that is chemical-free, organic, accessible, and capable of curing skin

problems, and beneficial to the product's consumer. These plants can be found or grown in our

gardens.

Specific:

1. Soap made from a vegetable that can treat skin problems.

2. Produce a natural and chemical-free soap.

3. Regain individuals' self-confidence.

4. Produce a soap with accessible ingredients/materials.

(7) REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Broccoli (Brassica oleracea) is a fast-growing annual plant that grows 60-90 cm

(24-35 inches) tall. Broccoli is upright and branching, with leathery leaves, and bears dense

green clusters of flower buds at the ends of the central axis and branches. It thrives in

moderate to cool climates and is propagated by seeds, which are sown directly in the field or in

plant beds to produce transplants. The heads, or florets, mature in 60 to 150 days, depending

on the variety and weather. (Petruzzello, 2018) It is a type of cruciferous vegetable, like

cabbage, kale, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts. Broccoli is high in fiber, vitamin C, vitamin

K, iron, and potassium, among other nutrients. It is also higher in protein than most other

vegetables. (Bjarnadottir, 2019)

Broccoli is good for the skin and helps to clear acne because it contains nutrients
and minerals that are gentle on the skin. It also keeps environmental irritants like dirt, dust,

and bacteria off the skin's surface and prevents clogged pores. This vitamin A-rich, low-calorie

vegetable regulates sebaceous (oil-producing) glands and is an excellent dietary treatment for

acne-prone skin. (Organic Harvest, 2021)

A naturally occurring compound found in broccoli called glucoraphanin is

converted into sulforaphane, which promotes healthy skin and aids in skin restoration. Its

antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties are well known. (Poulson; Kroner

2022) Sulforaphane is activated when glucoraphanin interacts with myrosinase, a family of

enzymes involved in plant defense. Myrosinase enzymes are only released and activated when

a plant is damaged. As a result, cruciferous vegetables must be cut, chopped, or chewed in

order to release myrosinase and activate sulforaphane. (Coyle, 2019)

Since sulforaphane has been shown to have chemopreventive properties, it could be

also used to help patients to reduce the risk of skin cancer. Instead of eating broccoli to get the

risk-lowering nutrients, it is advisable to apply sulforaphane to your skin topically in small

doses. (Dickinson, 2013)

Because of "Broccoli Seed Oil," broccoli has been proven to be a skincare

ingredient. Broccoli seed oil's moisturizing and antioxidant properties are just a few of the

reasons why this skincare ingredient is gaining popularity. Just like the Broccoli seed oil,

broccoli soap is directly absorbed into skin cells when applied topically and works on a

cellular level to reduce the harmful effects of UV ray exposure. (Andezion, 2021)

The Aloe vera plant has been known and used for centuries for its health, beauty,

medicinal, and skin care properties. The name Aloe vera comes from the Arabic word

"Alloeh," which means "shining bitter substance," and "vera" means "true." Aloe vera was
regarded as the universal panacea by Greek scientists 2000 years ago. The Egyptians referred

to Aloe as "the plant of immortality," and the plant is still used in dermatology for a variety of

purposes. (Surjushe; Vasani; Saple, 2008)

Aloe vera, also known as the "wonder plant," is a short-stemmed shrub. Aloe is a

genus of over 500 flowering succulent plants. Many Aloes grow naturally in North Africa.

Aloe vera's leaves are succulent, erect, and form a dense rosette. The gel obtained from the

plant's leaves has a variety of applications. It offers anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antiseptic,

and hydrating benefits for the skin. (Newman, 2017)

The gel produced by aloe vera leaves is high in vitamins A, C, E, and B12. It has an

antioxidant effect that can aid in the repair of sun damage and the slowing of the skin's aging

process. It also contains 98% water, which aids in skin moisturization, soothing, and

hydration. (Davis, 2020)

Aloe vera contains antibacterial properties that can aid in the control and reduction

of acne-causing bacteria. It prevents the growth of bacteria that cause acne. The salicylic acid

in Aloe Vera helps to unclog pores, which is beneficial when dealing with pimples and

blackheads. Aloe vera also aids in the removal of unsightly scars and the fading of blemishes.

A 2018 review of studies discovered that an aloe vera compound called "aloesin"

may help to reduce hyperpigmentation in acne scars. Aloesin inhibits the overproduction of

melanin, a darker pigment that can make acne scars more visible. (Nall, 2019)

Polysaccharides and gibberellins are also found in aloe vera. The aloe vera hormone

"Gibberellins" acts as a growth hormone for skin cells. As a result, your skin heals more

quickly and with fewer scars or skin marks, while also decreasing inflammation and redness.

Aloe vera may be a natural treatment for a variety of skin ailments. Nevertheless,

the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health says there is not enough

conclusive evidence to support all of aloe vera's claimed benefits. However, the use of aloe

vera gel in topical applications has been widely confirmed in clinical studies as safe. (Cherney,

2019)

Vitamin E is best known for its skin health and appearance benefits. It can be

applied topically to the skin to reduce inflammation and rejuvenate it. (Watson, 2019) Vitamin

E has long been thought to be an anti-inflammatory agent in the skin, and several studies have

supported its ability to prevent inflammatory damage after UV exposure. As previously stated,

topical vitamin E can reduce UV-induced skin swelling, thickness, erythema, and edema,

which are all symptoms of skin inflammation. (Michels, 2012)

The most important ingredient in the production of soap is soap base. Transparent,

white, or organic soap bases are all options. They are made up of various ingredients like

distilled water, alkali, glycerin, surface-active substances, and essential oils. The white base is

made of titanium dioxide, a cosmetic ingredient. Because the ready soap base has almost no

scent, essential oils or perfumed water are used to scent the soap. The base cools quickly,

which makes the job easier. (MelScience, 2022)

Broccoli and aloe vera is a good combination based on the researchers because of the vitamins

they contain and the benefits we can accquire by using them. Broccoli and aloe vera is safe

and effective to use as stated by the researchers.

These two organic products are very accessible and cost-effective. They can be planted

or purchased inexpensively at supermarkets. Aside from being cost-efficient, it has a very

simple process and can be done in our homes.

The development of such a product will have a significant impact on the treatment of

skin problems. It will also greatly assist in restoring people's self-esteem.

It is also expected to help the environment significantly because it is natural and does

not contain chemicals.
