This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you
develop knowledge, skills, and attitudes in the performance of Drafting tasks. The scope
of this module permits it to be used in many different learning situations. The language
used recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of students. The lessons are arranged to
follow the standard sequence of the course. But the order in which you read them can
be changed to correspond with the textbook you are now using.

The module has one lesson, named:

● Lesson 4 – Drafting Detail of Columns and Footings
a. Procedure in drafting column footing
b. Wall footing details
c. Procedure in drafting wall footing

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. draft column footing.
2. draft wall footing details.

Directions: Describe the following terminologies briefly. (five points each) Write your
answer in your quiz notebook. Write the word “ What I know” L4 on top before your
answer.

1. Deformed bar-

2. Lateral ties-

3. Dowel-

Lesson
Drafting Detail of Columns
4 and Footings

From the foundation plan drawn in the preceding operation, determine the types of walls
and columns used. For every type, draw a detailed drawing of each so that they (civil
worker) will construct according to standard.

Detailed presentation will help the civil worker to easily construct the structure
according to plan. On the part of a draftsman, he has the responsibility to produce clear
and accurate visualization of the said project.

Directions: Tour inside and outside of your house or neighbor for a moment then
answer the three questions on your quiz notebook. (Write the title “What’s New” (L3)
on top of the answer)

1. What size of CHB (Concrete Hollow Block) had been used in the exterior wall?
2. What size of CHB had been used in the interior wall?
3. What size/s of column had been used in the construction of the house?

PROCEDURE IN DRAFTING COLUMN FOOTING
1. Determine the sizes of footings and columns used in the foundation plan. Draw
it at any scale visible for the reader.
(See the illustration1)

3

DISCIPLINE • GOOD TASTE • EXCELLENCE
2. Lay out the deform bars to be used inside of the plan and sectional views of the
plan. (See illustration 2)

3. Draw the lateral ties first on the section part of the plan.

4. Insert the specification or details of the plan, the size of the deform bar, spacing
of lateral ties etc.( as in the figure)

5. Draw the sectional identification of the plan and insert other write-ups. Be
consistent on lettering.

The depth of the column footing will vary on the status of the soil test. The
spacing standard on lateral ties should be: 2 @ 0.05; 3 @ 0.10 ; 3 @ 0.15 and the rest
is at 0.20 on center. Indicate all details. Structural engineers may decide whether some
revision may be done or the design will be approved according to the building standards.

What’s More

WALL FOOTING DETAILS

Same as the column footing detail, wall footing detail must be presented in a
detailed drawing so that the civil worker may easily execute the construction. The depth
of the footing again may vary to the condition of the soil. The thickness of the concrete
wall footing bed is about 0.30 on height. WF1 and WF2 were presented in the illustration
because of some cases. There are lots with a narrow space for the construction of the
structure, so some owners decided to occupy the whole lot to maximize the space and
usability. On that matter, their fence would be their wall now. So, on WF2 you may see
the position of the footing is differ from the WF1. WF1 are commonly used on interior
walls or in a wide space of a lot area.

PROCEDURE IN DRAFTING WALL FOOTING

1. Determine the width of the footing which is 0.40 as an example for a residential
bungalow house.
2. Layout the plan and project it on the upper part for the sectional views.
3. Insert or draw the deform bar to be used as dowels, horizontal bar, cut bars and
continuous bar.
4. Draw the sectional view of the CHB on plan and section.
5. Insert the specification or the detail of footing; the size of deform bar, spacing
between dowels or vertical bar, spacing between horizontal bar and cut bars.
6. Draw the title and other write-ups like in the illustration.

ESSAY TYPE
Directions: Answer the following questions on your quiz notebook. (5 points each)
Write the title “What I had learned”(L4) on top of the answer)

1. Is it necessary for a draftsman that he must have knowledge on national

building code? Why?
2. Why do you need to have knowledge on different sizes of deformed bars?
3. As you studied this lesson, what do you think the other opportunities may
open for you aside from being a draftsman? Explain your idea.

What I Can Do

Directions: For you to help the civil worker or carpenter, draw a plan of a column and
footing detail by simply following the procedure as it stated above at any scale you want
(or copy the illustration of column footing detail) so that they can easily understand how
they will construct it. Draw it in one oslo paper. Write your name and date below right
of your Oslo paper and insert it in your portfolio.

MATCHING TYPE
Directions: Match column A with column B. Write the answer on

your Quiz Notebook. (Write the title “Assessment” (l2) on top of the answer)

_____1. What is the standard thickness or height of concrete of footing bed of a column
footing?
_____2. What is the standard thickness or height of concrete of wall footing bed of a
wall footing?
_____3. What is the standard size of lateral ties used in columns?
_____4. What is the standard size of vertical bar or dowel used in walls?
_____5. The standard spacing between cut bars on wall footing is ____?

Enumerate the following:

What are the three sizes of deformed bars commonly use in building residential
houses?
What are the two sizes of CHB commonly used in residential buildings?
