Diversity & Inclusion ESSEC

Course outline

This "Diversity and Inclusion in the workplace" course is about becoming familiar with diversity
and inclusion issues in the workplace, understanding cognitive processes that fuel diversity
dynamics, and developing reflexive reactions to these cognitive processes in order to develop
your inclusive capabilities as young professionals working in a global environment. The course is
laid out in weekly sessions that will take you on a learning journey that will enable you to
effectively apply concepts and skills to concrete situations.

In Module 1, you will be introduced to key diversity-related concepts and understand how they
developed in the workplace. You will learn about the facts and figures for five key diversity
categories and the issues associated with them. You will also evaluate a firm's diversity and
inclusion initiatives applying these concepts and categories.

In Module 2, you will become familar with cognitive processes that impact our reactions to
diversity and difference. You will have the opportunity to test your own diversity reflexes and use
the results from this test to help you think about and share your diversity experiences.

In Module 3, you will learn about the difficulties in implementing inclusion at both the individual
and firm level, and explore how some firms are trying to drive inclusion by encouraging
awareness through a disruptive process.

Finally, in Module 4, you will encounter diversity and inclusion best practices from around the
world.

The videos and other pedagogical supports will introduce you to important perspectives and
ideas. The cases, quizzes, exams and other resources will help to embed your learning. In order
to incorporate a diversity experience to this learning journey, the presentations have been
recorded by different people with different cultural backgrounds, and with different accents. This
not only reflects our increasingly diverse professional environment, but is also an essential
element in the learning process. It is relatively easy to understand diversity issues, but
understanding does not necessarily impact behavior change. Experience is key to embedding
knowledge about diversity.

Your involvement in the course is essential to develop your inclusive capabilities as young
professionals working in a global environment. We encourage you to participate fully in the
discussion forums in order to benefit as much as possible from the diverse insights and
experiences of your peers.
