Lesson Idea

Lesson Idea Name: Seasonal and Weather Patterns

Grade Level/Content Area: 1st
Content Standard Addressed:
S1E1: Obtain, evaluate, and communicate weather data to identify weather patterns.
b. Ask questions to identify forms of precipitation such as rain, snow, sleet, and hailstones as either
solid (ice) or liquid (water).
d. Analyze data to identify seasonal patterns of change. (Clarification statement: Examples could
include temperature, rainfall/snowfall, and changes to the environment.)
ISTE Technology Standard Addressed:  What would you like students to know and
Knowledge Constructor -- 1.3.c: be able to do by the end of this lesson:
Students curate information from digital resources I would like my students to be able to identify
using a variety of tools and methods to
create collections of artifacts that seasonal patterns and the weather changes
demonstrate meaningful connections or conclusions. associated with them using basic productivity
tool to collect research and create an artifact
using sway.
What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea?
I can use sway and other basic productivity tools to collect research and create an artifact
concluding my research.

Selected Basic Productivity Tool: Sway

How will this lesson be implemented? Check all that apply.

☐ Teacher-directed: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations.

☐ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic for
presentation and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. Products of
learning will be uniquely designed. Teacher simply facilitates the learning in a lesson like this.

☐ Project-based and/or Publishable: Students are completing projects to demonstrate their learning
and the projects can be shared outside of the classroom. This objective could be reached by
displaying the project on the school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom
blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing it via an outside source.

Lesson idea implementation: To start the activity, I will introduce the standard and our
learning goals. I will then show them my artifact as an example of what the students are to

do. The students will then be put in groups to do research on their assigned weather pattern.
After the students have completed their research, I will give them the option of creating an
artifact to display their research on Office 365 Sway. As the students are completing the
tasks, I will help to guide them through the activities where it is needed. After all the artifacts
are submitted, the students will get the opportunity to share their artifacts to the class,
displaying all their research and what they have learned. After each group presents their
artifact on weather patterns, the students will fill out a graphic organizer on the weather
patterns and use it as their ticket out.
Managing engagement: Describe a way to use this technology in a way that gets students
actively involved in authentic tasks and contexts? For this activity, each student will be given
a role by the teacher, and each group will be issued an informational book on their assigned
weather pattern. The students will oversee gathering all the research on their school
implemented laptops, along with creating the artifact; working together to create a product.
This project will be broken into three days: the first day the students are to gather all their
research, the second day they are to complete their research (if they didn’t the first day) and
start on their artifacts, the last day the students are to compete their artifacts and make any
changes that are needed. After the projects are finished, the following day we will present
our artifacts to the class.
Before starting to work on the projects each day we will watch an informational video on a
different weather pattern on BrainPOP, then go over the learning goal and the standard. As
the students are working, I will be walking around monitoring progress and making sure we
are staying on task.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL):
This activity gives students the opportunity to use technology to express themselves
creatively, while learning how to navigate the technology tools Sway or PowerPoint. As each
student has a different learning style, there are different roles each student has the option to
perform. This gives students the opportunity to create what they think is beneficial to the
learning of their peers, along with using their strengths to create a product. With each
student having a responsibility in their group, this keeps them actively engaged. The students
will also be engaged through learning from their peers, because it is a different and more fun
way to get information, being able to see your friends/classmates’ personalities in each
presentation.
Reflecting on enhanced learning: After creating this lesson, I feel that this activity will
positively impact the students learning. I feel that this will give them the opportunity to learn
their learning styles better, how to conduct research, how to navigate technology tools, and
build confidence. I am most excited to see the students present their hard work while
showing their personalities and teaching their classmates.
