Non-Mendelian Inheritance

Key to Correction
Learning Task # 1 Handout: Exploring Snapdragon (Total for LT1=18 points)

POINTS: (2 points each)

Guide Questions:
1. The law of inheritance was proposed by Gregor Mendel after conducting experiments on pea
plants for seven years.
The Mendel’s laws of inheritance include law of dominance, law of segregation and law of
independent assortment.
The law of segregation states that every individual possesses two alleles and only one allele is
passed on to the offspring.
The law of independent assortment states that the inheritance of one pair of genes is independent
of inheritance of another pair.
2. The two alleles are R (for red) and W (for white)
3. Incomplete Dominance-a heterozygote shows a phenotype that is intermediate between the two
homozygous phenotypes. Neither the allele is dominant over the other.

Learning Task # 2 Answers to questions in page 20. (Total for LT2=10 points)
POINTS: (5 points each)
1. Based on the results of genetic crosses, the red and white alleles remain separate and distinct.
Half the gametes of the snapdragon carry the allele for red and half carry the allele for white. A
completely dominant allele does not occur resulting to an intermediate which is the snapdragon
with pink color.
2. The result will be completely different because there will be no intermediate. If the red and white
flower will be crossed there will be only homozygous red (FRFR), heterozygous red (FRFW) and
homozygous white (FWFW) as the phenotypes of the offspring for F1 and F2 generation.
