THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

1.1 Introduction

Health is a crucial component of life and one of the main determinants of

basic human performance. Overall well-being and lifestyle are enhanced by

health. To experience a high quality of life, one must cultivate healthy behaviors

because one’s physical well-being impacts their capacity for activity.

In 2010, it was estimated that overweight and obesity contributed to

million deaths, 3.9% of years lost to mortality, and 3.8% of years with a

handicap. Overweight and obesity increase the risk of developing serious

metabolic diseases such cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure.

The fast rise in obesity and overweight brought on by dietary changes and

sedentary lifestyles had a far-reaching effect on the health of society. Increased

obesity, decreased physical activity, and an increased risk of metabolic and

cardiovascular diseases are results of urbanization, westernization of foods,

lifestyle changes, and consumption of a heavily processed diet. Over the past

three decades, there has been a significant Increase in obesity incidence and

overweight, according to a thorough analysis of data from around the world,

Yarahmadi, Etemad, & Hazaveh (2013).


The findings of the national nutrition surveys conducted by the Food and

Nutritional Research Institute (FNRI), which revealed a significant rise in

overweight and obesity among both preschoolers and schoolchildren, led the

Philippine Association of the Study of Overweight and Obesity (PASOO) to

recognize the growing problem of obesity even among the young. According to

nutritional studies from 2003, the rate of obesity has grown since 1998.

According to the FNRI study, 27 out of 100 Filipinos aged 20 and older

(23.9%), 2 out of 10 children aged 5 and under (1.4%), and 2 out of 100

children aged 6 to 10 (1.3%), are overweight.

In Del Monte, Talacogon, Agusan del Sur particularly in Del Monte

National High School, there are circumstances that students malnutrition and

obesity which are related to health issues on daily lifestyle and Body Mass

Index of the students specifically in Grade 7 department. They are prone to

these factors because lack of physical activity, sleeping habit, waste elimination,

water intake and nutritional supplement. This study will be conducted to

determine if the above-mentioned factors relate or affect the BMI of the

students.

1.2 Conceptual Framework

This research study aims to determine the relationship between the daily

lifestyle and body mass index (BMI) of Grade 7 students. This study also

specifically intends to determine the:


Health is an element of life that is fundamentally one of the key variables in

fundamental human performance. Health adds to overall well being and

lifestyle. Good health habits must be achieved in order for an individual to

enjoy the quality of life, because fundamental health determines what individual

can do.

1. Level of daily lifestyle when analyzed according to:

1.1 exercise;

1.2 sleeping habits;

1.3 waste elimination;

1.4 water intake;

1.5 nutritional supplement;

2. Level of Body Mass Index(BMI)

The figure above shows the effects of daily lifestyle to the Body Mass

Index (BMI) of the Grade 7 students. Daily Lifestyles that are shown above will

be use as based if whether their daily lifestyle has anything to do with the result

of their BMI.

1.3 Statement of the Problem

This study aim to determine the daily lifestyle and its effect on the Body

Mass Index of the Del Monte National High School Grade 7 students.

Specifically the study seek to answer the following questions:

1. What are the affect of daily lifestyle on the Body Mass Index of the

Grade 7 students?

1.4 Significance of the Study

This study will be benefited the students by allowing them to understand

and can conclude which five of the factors (exercise, sleeping, habit, waste

elimination, water intake, and nutritional on their supplement) has the greatest

on their Body Mass Index (BMI). They may able to practice healthy lifestyle

with the findings that are established on this study.

Provides you with an approximate overall health calculation and the risk

of developing chronic conditions and is a measure of fat based on height and

weight that applies to children men and women in fact, knowing your BMI can

help you and your GP determine any health risks you may face if it’s outside of

the healthy range.


Moreover this study is beneficial to the following:

Students. The primary stakeholders of the research study ere the

students regardless of their education level. The findings of the study will able

to know the lifestyle of the student who delayed growth and low wright.

School Administrator. Another main focus of the study was about the

possible intervention that could they give to their student who those belong to

obesity and malnourishment. Findings of this study could give provide the

schools and idea to formulate a program that would fit and support these

students.

Field of Psychology. The finding of the research study can contribute

in the field of psychology for us to know about the symptoms of unhealthy

students.

Parents. The study could help them to be more focusing their children

daily lifestyle. Moreover, parents of unhealthful students will realize the lack of

nutrition of their children.

Teachers. School was our second home, and teachers were our second

parents. The teacher also played an important role in modeling us. Findings on

this research study would shed them some light in the current situation of the

student malnourished and obesity that will help them fully understand them and

give some due consideration.

To future researchers. This study may serve as an inspiration for

researching and learning more about body mass of the child. This may serve as
useful source for their studies. The knowledge they collect though their research

could be used to become an active future researcher.

1.5 Scope and Limitation of the Study

This study will be conducted at Del Monte National High School, the data

will be collected at the Grade 7 classrooms and this study will last before or

after the end of this year. The respondents would be Grade 7 student at any age

and any gender.

We will collect their BMI and also their daily lifestyle mentioned at

Figure 1.Other factors not stated in this section are beyond the scope of this

study.

1.6 Definition of Terms

Body Mass Index (BMI). Commonly used and easiest anthropometric index for

evaluating the dietary status of kids and adult.

Exercise. Any physical activity that enhances or retains physical fitness and

general health and wellness.

Nutritional Supplement. Taken by mouth and generally includes one or more

dietary ingredients such as vitamins, minerals, herbs, amino acids and enzymes.

Sleeping Habit. During the day and particularly before bedtime, behaviors can

have significant effect on sleep and it can lead to good sleep and sleeplessness.

Waste Elimination. Bowel elimination is the way solid waste is removed from

digestive tract itself.

Water Intake. The consumption of water daily.
