MOMENT - CURVATURE CURVE

Subject: Concrete Structures

Civil Engineering Department
Concrete Structures PE Nº 3-F

EXERCISE Nº 1:
Determine the moment - curvature curves for the sections of a beam given in Figure 1, through:
. a commercial software (for the 3 sections).
. a spreadsheet (for one of the sections).

Figure 1: Sections of a beam

Data:
. Section Properties: Concrete and reinforcement sections according to Figure 1.
. Nonlinear material data:
.. Concrete:
Stress – strain curve: Mander constitutive law (unconfined),
f’c = 20 MPa (compressive strength),
Parametric strain data: According to values predefined by the software selected.
Note: With spreadsheet, use the Hognestad constitutive law.
.. Reinforcement:
Stress – strain curve: elastic - plastic constitutive law
fy = 420 MPa (yield stress)
fu = 420 MPa (tensile stress)
Parametric strain data: According to values predefined by the software selected.

Result:
. One figure with the 3 moment - curvature curves for each of the sections in Figure 1 (using a
commercial software).
. One figure with 2 moment - curvature curves: software result vs. spreadsheet result.
. Conclusion about strength and ductility of the 3 sections.
