How contagious is Delta variant?

Delta variant = 6x Alpha variant

Note: The cleanest way of comparing the pure biological spreading

power of viruses is to look at their R0 (pronounced R-naught). It's the
average number of people each infected person passes a virus on to if
nobody were immune and nobody took extra precautions to avoid
getting infected.

Why is delta able to transmit more easily?

- The virus was “fitter in human airway cells,”

 an increased amount of the virus in the infected person
 may expel more virus out into the air to pass on to the next person.

- the CT value (cycle threshold) seems to be lower

 contain more virus.

- People may become infected after a lower exposure.

Why Delta variant is dangerous

- Mutations in the Delta variant make it replicate faster and evade the
body’s immunity mechanism.

- WHO:
* it is the ‘fastest and fittest’ variant yet.
* The Delta variant is 50-60 per cent more transmissible than the
Alpha variant which was 50-60 per cent more transmissable than
the original strain of COVID-19.

The differences among Rapid antibody test, rapid antigen test, and RT-PCR test
Rapid Antibody Test Rapid Antigen Test RT-PCR Test

What it is Test to show if a person had an Diagnostics test (antigen) to show if a Diagnostic test (molecular) to show if
infection in the past person has an active infection a person has an active infection

Test duration 10 – 15 minutes 15 – 30 minutes Same days or up to a weak

Sample collected Blood from fingertip/vein Nasal or throat swab Nasal or throat swab

What the test detects Antibodies (IgM and IgG) in the Specific proteins from the virus Virus’s genetic material
person’s immune system
Best time to test > 7 days after exposure 1 – 5 days from onset of symptoms 2 – 7 days after exposure to virus

Positive/reactive means Infected in the past Active virus infection Active virus infection

Accuracy Sometimes a second test is needed Positive results usually accurate, but Typically high accurate rates
for accurate results false negative can occur. Negative
results need to be confirmed with a
molecular test
Consideration Accuracy rate varies depending on Negative results should be confirmed Expensive, facilities not widely
the test kit and timing with an RT-PCR test available
Usefulness in diagnosing covid-19 Able to see if some one has past Useful for detecting covid-19 Considered the gold standard in
patients infection, but it is not suitable to outbreaks quickly and in large diagnosing covid-19 virus due to high
detect current active covid-19 quantities sensitivity (accuracy) rates
infection

Com-Cov Study (Oxford University):
Mixing Covid jabs has good immune response
The doses four weeks apart in 850 volunteers aged 50 and above, found:

•AZ followed by Pfizer induced higher antibodies and T cell responses than
Pfizer followed by AZ

•Both of these mixes induced higher antibodies than two doses of AZ

•The highest antibody response was seen after two doses of Pfizer, and
the highest T cell response from AZ followed by Pfizer
