Conditionals: と、ば、たら、なら
と
“と” marks a conditional clause and indicates:
げんいん こうか お
I) a logical (原因)cause – (効果)effect relationship, and V2 すぐ 起きます
II) an action or event and its inevitable (or natural or habitual) consequence.
So ‘と’ is best used with factual statements that describes something that is true for everyone or true
every time for someone (habitual).

1.秋になると、すずしくなります。 (natural)
If/when it becomes fall, it gets cool.

2.夏になると、毎日 海で 泳ぎます。 (habitual)
If/when it becomes summer, (I) swim in the sea everyday.
3.このボタンをおすと、金が でる。 (habitual)
Note 1: The conditional clause expresses something that happens, (not something the speaker or the hearer

internationally does). Therefore, 文2 it cannot be used with 禁止形・命令形 or such endings as ~
ましょう, ~てください, ~ないでください、 ~ほうがいい、~なければならない、~たいで

It is safe to use ‘ば in factual statement, and
II. Also, ‘ば’ can be used in almost any type of sentence of the first clause ends with and i-adjective.

‘たら’ is the most useful of all the conditional words because it can be used with any type of sentence
ending.
The action expressed in the first clause (clause with ‘たら’) occurs first, followed by the action in the
second clause. V1=>V2

If/when I go to Japan, I want to visit Kyoto.

お金が たまったら、 車 を買うつもりです。
If/when I save up money, I intend to buy a car.

If the weather is good tomorrow, I think I will go to the ocean/sea/beach.
Note 1. Giving specific advice to the other party as to how to cope with a given
situation.

I feel sick today.
B: じゃ、学校をやすんだら、どうですか。
Why don’t you take a day off from school.
On the other hand, “…ba, ii n desu” means “All one can do is…” giving a
solution to a problem in more general terms (see the Note 2 above).
Suggestions for both the speaker and the listener to take a certain action would be
expressed by “---ませんか” “why don’t we do …?” “Would you like to …?
(proposal)”

E.g. A: のどが かわきましたね。 お茶に しませんか。
I am thirsty. Shall we do tea?
B: ええ、そうしましょう。 Yes, let’s.

I. Used in Noun and ナ-けいようし
’ば’ can be used only with verb or i-adjectives. “Verb or i-Adj. + ‘ば’, ...
Instead, ‘なら’ is used with a noun or na-adjectives for conditional statement.
か
E.g. カタカナなら、書けます。If it is katakana, (I) can write it.
