Fe2O3+3Co->3CO2+2Fe

Average atomic masses are:

C=12

O=16

Fe+56

1- Calculate the mass of Co2 Produced when 400g of Fe2O3 react with Co:
Mass is unknown. The given is 400g of fe2O3 which is a reactant. We call it the given mass. So
you are given a mass and you want to calculate the mass, that is why it is called mass mass
calculations.
Takes 3 steps
-change the mass given into moles: Fe2O3, and you are expected to calculate the grams of Co2
in 3co2.
Number of moles = M/Mr calculate the mass of Fe2O3 first 2*56+3*16 =160g/mole, then
We find the number of moles by dividing mass/mr.
400/160=2.5 moles of Fe2O3
- Find what is missing then write down the given. In this case you are given a mass and you want
to calculate the mass.

Step 1 in the solution:

Change the mass given into moles. It is a must. Use the triangle mole =mass/mr. the mr is the same
compound used with the given grams.

Step 2: find moles of co2 using mole ratio

1fe2o3(arrow)3cO2

2.5 moles (arrow)x multiply the moles beside the compounds not the compounds

X=7.5 moles

Step 3 chenge the moles of the unknown mass to mass.

Mass=molexMr

Mass=7.5x44=330 g of Co2

Change mass to moles, use mole ratio change moles into mass.
Calculate the mass of Fe produced when 280 g of Co react

1- Change the mass into moles: n=m/mr 280/28 = 10 moles of Co

2- Find moles of fe using the mole ratio: 3co/10 x 2fe/x then cross multiply 3x=20 x=6.8

3- Change moles of Fe to mass m=nxMr 6.6x56 = 396.6
