CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Securing  a   good  job   after  college   and  finding   an  exiting place to begin
the Career  is the prime focus of every fresh graduate. Desire of success in the  job
market and how to click the first job becomes an issue  of survival. In such a situation
it becomes even more vital to understand and accept the fact  that the  degree alone
is not  sufficient to survive the Job Market. It certainly makes their candidature
eligible   to  apply  for  that  particular   job.  The subjects / specialization and
grades/marks obtained etc. are also equally important. However in the present
competitive scenario there   is   a   strong   possibility   of abundance   of equally
qualified and competent candidates.(Sufia Rehman and 2DR. Afaq Mehmood April
2014).

According to Yorke M. (2004) Employability, therefore, is not just about getting a

job, it is about a broader set of skills and attributes that will enable a graduate to be
successful throughout their working life.

Since lifetime employment within the same organization is no longer a

prerogative for all, job security has to be safeguarded differently. In this respect, ‘lifetime

employability instead of ‘lifetime employment’ is often put forward as the new protection
in the labour market. Although employability became a buzzword in organizational
literature, no clear consensus about its meaning and measurement can be found. In this
paper, we bring some clarification to the debate about employability. We develop a
conceptual model of the ‘employability process’. This conceptual model offers a
framework for future empirical research on employability. It can help to identify the main
factors that may influence labour market transitions for individuals. In addition, it may
clarify the role government and employers can play in shaping these career moves.
The focused of this study is  to determine the employability status of the senior high
school graduates of Florita Herrera Irizari National High School of the s.y 2016-2017.

RELATED LITERATURE

Employability is students’ ability to get a job that matches their educational

standards after graduation (Cox & King, 2006). Furthermore, employability is
categorized into two aspects, namely transferable skills or employability skills (ES) and
subject skills. ES are general skills needed to get and keep a job, while subject skills are
specific skills relevant to a specific job (Cox & King, 2006). These specific skills are
important because students without specific skills tend to have difficulty in finding and
obtaining jobs after graduation (Kigotho, 2019). As a result, it is strongly advised that
students develop and shape these two types of abilities in order to enhance their
employment opportunities after graduation.

According to (Gishan Tharanga Sumanasiri, MSA Yajid, Ali Khatibi Journal of

Studies in Education 5 (3), 75-88, 2015) There is increasing pressure from
governments, funding organizations, students and parents on universities around the
world since graduate employability has been clearly recognized as one of the main
objectives of university education. Accreditation bodies also appear to measure quality
of education through the contributions made towards employability. In such a context
one would assume that employability of university graduates to be clearly understood
and extensively researched area. However, the real situation appears to be one which
requires the urgent attention of all stakeholders of university education. A review of
literature on graduate employability is a clear need today and current paper achieves
this by summarizing the major articles on university graduate employability theoretical
frameworks and empirical studies. Despite the large number of studies, graduate
employability appears to be suffering from the problems of lack of theoretical control
and politicization which appear to have become major obstacles for future
developments of the concept.

ES, there are many opinions about the elements, which may also be termed
skills, just as there are various ideas about the definition. This variability is a result of
the variety of situations in which prior research on ES has been conducted. From the
perspective of an employer, Naawai (2021) identifies the ten most essential qualities
that businesses look for when hiring new graduate students. Among the 10 abilities
are: Computer literacy skills; Team work skills ;Intellectual skills; Work independently;
Communication skills; Skills to acquire new knowledge; Analysis and problem-solving
skills; Numerical skills; Character or personality; Language skills.

Among the ten skills, computer literacy skills are the most important for
employers in recruiting fresh graduates. The computer literacy skills refer to the skills to
operate tasks on the computer which are divided into two categories, namely software
and hardware. Skills in computer software, such as understanding and being able to run
programs, applications, equipment, and so on that support individuals in carrying out
their work. Meanwhile, computer hardware skills, such as being able to activate a
computer and a basic understanding of supporting components in operating a
computer.

RELATED STUDIES

According to these authors (Hillage and Pollard(1998, 2) the employability of

individuals depends on their knowledge, skills and attitudes. Moreover, they argue that

employability is linked to career management skills or the way in which individuals

mobilize, present and update their resources in the context of the job market.

According to(Alex Tymon, Studies in higher education 38 (6), 841-856, 2013)

Despite ongoing debate about whether they can and should, most higher education
institutions include the development of employability skills within their curricula.
However, employers continue to report that graduates are not ready for the world of
work, and lack some of the most basic skills needed for successful employment.
Research into why this might be abounds from the perspectives of multiple
stakeholders, including government, employers, higher education institutions and
graduates. Interestingly though, the views of undergraduates, the recipients of this
employability development, are not well known.

According to (skills you need.com) In today’s competitive landscape of

businesses and careers, there’s a tough fight for every vacancy.

Since coveted jobs are few, it has become imperative to get noted by prospective
employers fast. But employability too has overcome its boundaries that were earlier
defined just by skills. Now, it includes a bigger vertical, which consists of behavior,
attitude and aptitude. It has become more demanding than ever in terms of being simply
qualified since it now tries to reach a better version of YOU – as a person, as a team
player and as a leader. This are the key qualities employers are looking for in their
future employees. Good personal presentation, a positive attitude (a can-do approach),
