Grammar - Translation method

- memorization is important

- traditional way to teach a foreign language

- one can pull adjectives and nouns from the story and translate them into English (abuela –
grandmother), bonita can be changed to bonito if we’re talking about a male person (pretty)

- write the noun and adj combination and expect the students to learn them (pretty girl, old
grandmother)

- deductive vs inductive

- the need for the communication of students is needed (that’s why the method emerged)

- you need to make your students communicate, as a teacher

Audio-lingual method

- you listen and learn

- teacher: say bottle, the student says it

- you’re encouraging your students to imitate

- teacher: repeat after me

- backward build up: repeat again

- repetition drill: they talk to each other and repeat the questions/answers

- chain drill: volunteers talk to each other

- show them pics…are you going to the bakery shop? If it’s a different pic, say no, I’m going to x

Direct method

Silent way (method)

- show them an object and they will say what it is

- the chart is behind the teacher and the teacher points to the chart, it is possible to pronounce words
that aren’t on the chart

- colors on the left, group of letters on the right…teacher says color, students say the group of letters

- make the students speak autonomously

Demo/physical response

- pre teaching key words by showing them pics and repeating the name of the thing that is drawn on the
pic

- ask students to read sth before sleep the brain isn’t relaxed), when they wake up, it’ll be relaxed

- support the teacher in whatever they need

- they work with foreign kids

- those with special needs

- no teenagers (they don’t need their assistance)

- TA are required for young students
