Accomplishment Report

Conducting community services build relationships with the recipients. CHED

Memorandum Order No. 52, s. 2016, explained that to pursuit an inclusive social and economic
development, there should be research development, innovation extension. Then, the Wesleyan
University – Philippines is implementing the trifold function: instruction, research, and extension.
Through this, the College of Business and Accountancy (CBA) conducted an extension and
outreach program week, from December 06, 07, and 09, 2022. This endeavor aimed to lend a
helping hand to the beneficiaries.

December 06, 2022

The first event was with the partnership with East West International Educational
specialists inc. The event entitled “The widening global digital skills gap across all industries:
Exponential technologies affecting global education and ways forward in the midst of the 4th and
5th industrial revolution” which occurred in the Wesleyan University – Philippines Aurora Campus
with 500 students attendees. The speaker was Mr. Dennis Franco Layug.

December 07, 2022

The second activity was with a partnership between the Wesleyan University – Philippines
Cushman Campus and Wesleyan University – Philippines Aurora Campus, the Financial Literacy
Program entitled “Be Financial Literate: A financial literacy program for small scale business
owners “at Brgy. Dianawan, Maria Aurora, Aurora. This was initiated by Prof. Jelwin D.L.
Bautista, Associate Dean, in collaboration with Dr. Mary Anne G. Castro, Program head of

Head of Bachelor of Science in Accountancy (BSA). The resource speakers were Prof. Mary Berly
M. Salvador, BSBA Program head; Prof, Kristan M. Licaycay, BSA Program Head and Prof.
Ronnie Joseph Odulio, CPA, JPIA adviser.

COLLEGE OF BUSINESS AND ACCOUNTANCY
CONCEPT PAPER
FINANCIAL LITERACY PROGRAM

Rationale

Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are essential to the economy's growth. It provides
opportunities for entrepreneurs, generates employment, and develops rural areas. SMEs created 82
percent of jobs in Ghana in 2016 (Amoah & Amoah, 2018). In addition, SMEs eradicates poverty
between the years 2001 to 2017 in Pakistan through an increase in employment growth (Zafar et
al., 2019). Al-Haddad et al. (2019) supported that SMEs reduce poverty since it increases the
income of individuals. These are pieces of evidence that SMEs contribute to the growth of a
nation's economy.

In the Philippines, SMEs have the biggest number of contributions to the Philippine Gross
Domestic Product (GDP). According to the Department of Trade and Industry [DTI] (n.d.), the
total number of businesses is 1,080,810, and 99.58 percent are SMEs that produced 64.67 percent
or 5,461,731 jobs in the country. Mapa (2022) informed that one of the main contributors to the
GDP growth in the third quarter of 2022 was SMEs in the wholesale and retail trade
sector. Therefore, these SMEs play a vital role in the economy.

Challenges are part of growth. The SMEs encountered challenges despite their contribution
to the country. Amoah and Amoah (2018) identified problems faced by the SME sector, such as a
lack of managerial skills, record bookkeeping, and access to the global market. For these reasons,
Tambunan (2019) concluded recommendations to assist SMEs with their problems (1) provide
training, (2) provide funding with low interest, and (3) provide financial support for beginners.
These problems, challenges, and struggles that the SME sector experienced can be avoided by
equipping them.

To assist and contribute to the raised problems of MSEs, there will be a partnership between
the Wesleyan University – Philippines Cushman Campus and Wesleyan University – Philippines
Aurora Campus that aims to conduct a Financial Literacy Program on December 06, 2022, at Brgy.
Dianawan, Maria Aurora, Aurora. The activity is entitled “Be Financial Literate: A financial
literacy program for small scale business owners “with the resource speakers Prof. Mary Berly
Salvador, Prof, Kristan Licaycay, CPA and Prof. Ronnie Joseph Odulio, CPA.

Aims of the activities

Financial literacy is essential to attain financial freedom. Being financially literate benefits
individuals in managing their finances and making intelligent decisions. This activity aimed to
equip small-scale business owners in managing their income, expanding their businesses, and
achieve financial stability. The tackled topics were Concepts of credit, Business registration
process, and Advice in managing finances

COLLEGE OF BUSINESS AND ACCOUNTANCY
CONCEPT PAPER
GIFT-GIVING PROGRAM
Rationale

The Philippines commemorates the longest Christmas holiday worldwide. When the month
of September arrives, Christmas songs and decorations are everywhere that evidence the Christmas
season is coming. In addition, Christmas is a gift-giving season. According to Caplow (1982),
Christmas is a symbol of social bonds. A private organization, institutions, and individuals extend
their hands to less fortunate families, individuals, and barangays to share their blessings. 33.6% of
annual donations from the United States throughout the Christmas celebrations (Müller & Rau,
2019).
Third-world countries, wherein the Philippines belongs are still in the process of recovering
from the losses from the global pandemic last 2020 due to Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) which
led to numerous lockdowns occurred. Everyone is affected by this situation, especially minimum
wage earners. Therefore, it is important for the less fortunate families to look and aid from support
from the Local Government Unit (LGUs), and private sectors.
Wesleyan University is a non-profit organization and a Methodist institution. It extends its
helping hand since 1994 and with the support of the Christian Children's Fund, Inc. (CCF), reached
out to 24 municipalities in Nueva Ecija and five barangays in Bataan in 1970 (WU-P, 2021). Now,
there are four existing partner barangays: Purok Manggahan, Pangatian, Purok Riverside
Pangatian, Brgy. Kalikid Norte and Brgy. Bakod Bayan that receives 60 grocery packages each
barangay. The College of Business and Accountancy also extends its helping hands to two
barangays from Maria Aurora, Aurora namely: Brgy. Bayanihan and Brgy. Diana receives 100
and 40 grocery packages respectively. This was with the partnership with Wesleyan University –
Philippines Cushman campus and Aurora campus.

Aims of the activities

The annual gift-giving of the College of Business and Accountancy (CBA) aimed to extend
a helping hands to the beneficiaries partner barangays of the university. It provides smiles to the
recipients and shows the true essence of Christmas season. In addition, the activity ties the
relationship of the students, volunteers, faculty, and staff who worked together to make this
outreach program viable.
