METRIX
METRIX (Mechanical Engineering Time for Research Ideas Exchange) is an annual event of
the Department of Mechanical Engineering, IIT Ropar. The department took initiative in 2018
and successfully organized three editions till now. The aim of the event is to enrich knowledge
through sharing ideas between research scholars, faculty members and invitees (Industry and
Academia). The key events include Lab poster presentations, Research talks, Expert talks
(Industry & Academia) and Panel discussions.
THEME AND RELEVANCE
This event provides a forum to present and exchange research ideas among scholars, faculty
members and experts from industries working in the field of Mechanical Engineering.
• The event aims to narrow down the gap between industry and academia. This will help
research scholars to ideate new research fields relevant to the state of the art industrial
development. This will enhance the quality research as well as build stronger
collaborations between academia and industries.
• The event will help in showcasing the available research facilities in the Department of
Mechanical Engineering at IIT Ropar which will help the researchers from other
organisations to utilise them.
• The event will give a sense of enthusiasm and encouragement to masters/undergraduate
students from different parts of the country to pursue higher studies as well as to take
research as a career option.

EVENTS
Lab Poster Presentations
• The participants from each research lab will present
their work showcasing ongoing research activities in
their lab. Their performance and novelty of the work
will be evaluated by experts. Best poster presentations
will be awarded.

Research Talk
• The scholars from the department and participants
from other institutes will deliver a research talk
and share their ideas with a bigger audience. It
aims to promote and enhance the quality research
through interactions.
Expert talk
• Experts from industry and academia are invited to
give special talks on the state of the art research
activity and career opportunities. This will help in
creating strong collaborations between industry and
academia. It will also provide an opportunity for the
young researchers to be familiar with the current
industrial challenges.
Panel discussion
• A panel of eminent faculty members and industry
experts will discuss and give their valuable
insights on an exclusive topic.

Lab visits
• The research labs of the Department of Mechanical
Engineering will be opened for visitors as per the
scheduled timings for demonstrations.

Awards
• Best lab posters and research talks will be awarded
along with a certificate of excellence. All participants
will be awarded participation certificates.

ABOUT IIT ROPAR
Indian Institute of Technology Ropar (IIT Ropar) located in Rupnagar, Punjab is one of the top
technological institute in the country which came into existence as one of the eight new IITs
established by the Ministry of Education (MoE), formerly Ministry of Human Resource
Development (MHRD), Government of India in 2008. It is an Institute of National Importance
in the country imparting technical education of high standards with the motto of deploying
intellect in the right direction. The institute has student strength of over 2500. The faculty
strength is about 180 across 11 departments. The institute is spread over an area of 525 acres, on
the bank of river Sutlej. The institute offers B.Tech, M.Tech, M.S., M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs in
various departments. IIT Ropar got 2nd rank in the THE World University Ranking and 1st rank
in Research Quality by QS India Rankings 2020. IIT Ropar ranked 22th in Engineering
Category and 35th in the Overall ranking in NIRF 2022.

DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING, IIT ROPAR

It is one of the largest departments of the Institute, housing 25 faculty members with varied
expertise and hundreds of undergraduate, postgraduate, and more than 150 PhD research
scholars. The department has awarded doctorate degrees to 50 PhD students since its inception
(2008). The faculty members in the department can be broadly categorized into Design,
Manufacturing, and Thermal. Currently, the department offers B. Tech. in Mechanical with
minors in many fields. The department also offers master’s Degrees in four disciplines, viz.
Manufacturing Engineering (MF), Mechanics and Design (MD), Thermal & Fluids
Engineering (TF), and Computational Mechanics (CM). The main thrust areas of the
department are Additive Manufacturing, Bio-Mechanical Engineering, Energy Efficiency and
Sustainability, Intelligent Mechanical Systems, and Micro/Nano Engineered Systems. The
Department also has a unique “Department Research Facilities (DRF)” portal through which
most of the equipment and departmental facilities are open to researchers/engineers from other
institutes or industries.

PROJECT / CONSULTANCY
The Department of Mechanical Engineering has strong collaboration with various
government and private organisations. The department has attracted projects from
government organisations like ISRO, DRDO, DMRL, DST, SERB, and private
organisations like GE (General Electric), ABB Robotics, Dassault Systemes in the field of
mechanical and allied engineering.

✓ Any PhD Scholar / Faculty from any institute can present their on going work of their lab
in the form of a poster.

✓ PhD Scholars / Faculty who wish to present their work in “Research talk” needs to send
their abstract to the email id: metrix@iitrpr.ac.in

✓ Registration is mandatory for all the MTech students to attend the event.

✓ As a part of the theme of event, the organizing committee has decided to waive
registration fee for all participants.
