Lesson Plan: Animals and Their Body Parts

Date: Tuesday, February 17, 2022 Grade: 1 EPL: 3-4

Objectives:  Use prior knowledge to talk about animals, their body parts, and the
functions of those body parts.
 Use given sentence stems and discussion structure to talk about pictures
of habitats, the animals that live in them, and how these animals use their
body parts to survive.

Hook Have the habitats and the animals that live in them posted on the walls before
5 min. students walk in. When students come in, they will notice the new material
on the walls. Let them walk around and look and wonder why we have put up
all of these pictures.

Warm-up Ask the students what their favorite animals are and why they are interested
5 min. in those animals. Introduce the kid-friendly version of the essential questions:
How do the body parts of an animal help it survive? How do animals get
what they need to live and grow?

Presentation 1. Refer to the pictures on the walls and let students know that we are
10 min. going to do a gallery walk and talk about the pictures on the walls for
our Turn and Talk.
2. Review the Turn and Talk structure that we have been using since the
beginning of the year. Read the questions for each part that the
students will use to guide their discussions about the animals, their
body parts, and their habitats.

Guided Assign student pairs to a habitat to start with for Turn and Talk. After
Practice/ students finish Turn and Talk for one habitat, they will rotate to the next
habitat and talk about that one. The students will rotate through until each
Assessment
pair has had the opportunity to talk about each habitat and the animals in it.
20 min. Informal assessment: Teacher moves around the room and listens to pair talk,
guiding and facilitating as needed. While listening to the discussions, the
teachers will assess how much background knowledge the students have
about the habitats and animals. They will also assess how much detail and
whether students are using adjectives to describe the habitats and animals,
since one unit objective is to identify and use adjectives.

Wrap Up Have students meet as a whole group and share something interesting that
5 min. their pair talked about during Turn and Talk.
