INTRODUCTION
It is impossible to overstate the value of trucking businesses and services to all types of
businesses given their significant role in shipping, particularly shipping of commodities. Stan
Mack claims that companies of all sizes depend on the trucking sector to ensure quick delivery
times and ship goods securely across the country. Without it, things cannot be transported and
distributed to consumers, and a country would come to a complete standstill. We frequently are
unaware that the majority of freight, from food to medicine to garbage disposal, is transported by
trucks. The distribution of medical supplies will stop and hospitals will start to run out of
supplies within 24 hours of the trucking industry shutting down due to a natural disaster or
terrorist attack, claims an article in Fremont Contract Carriers, Inc. There will be long lineups at
the pump as gas stations start to run out of fuel. Mail and package delivery will stop, and all of
this will happen merely 24 hours after trucking is banned. As a result, if trucking ceases, many
crucial sectors will as well.

Companies like Custom Load Trucking (CLT) are under increasing demand from
customers to transport their goods more quickly in the fast-paced world of trucking. As the
communications and computer industries continue to grow, CLT has recognized the need for
new information systems that can schedule and track shipments with pinpoint accuracy.
However, with a shortage of project managers in the job market, CLT has decided to develop
strong project managers from within the company. This strategy leads to the introduction of
Stewart Stockton, an up-and-coming systems analyst who has a strong desire to become a project
manager. Stewart has been successful as both a systems analyst and a team leader. However,
moving into a project management role may require him to focus more on the managerial side of
things and delegate technical work to others. It is important to assess whether he is ready for this
transition and whether he has the right balance of technical and managerial skills.

As Monica Gibbons, an assistant vice president of information systems, prepares for

Stewart's annual performance review, she must decide whether to offer him a project
management role and advise him on how to advance his career. Monica is faced with the
challenge of managing Stewart's career development, providing him with advice and guidance on
how to advance within the organization. It is important to identify his career goals and help him
develop the skills and experience needed to achieve them. This may involve giving him his own
project, but it also requires ongoing support and feedback to ensure that he is developing the
right skills and experience. The case highlights the importance of effective project management
in the success of CLT's operations, the challenges of the shortage of project managers, and the
potential for talented individuals to advance within their organization.
DISCUSSION
1. Do you think the decision by CLT to build project managers from its existing
employee base is a good one? What advice would you give CLT to make sure it has
strong project management skills in the company?

- Based on the information provided, CLT's decision to build project managers from within
the company is a good one. With a shortage of job applicants in the market, it can be
difficult to find experienced project managers who also have knowledge of the trucking
industry. By building project managers from within, CLT can develop a team with
industry-specific knowledge and expertise in the new information systems they are
planning to implement. However, it is important for CLT to ensure that their project
managers have the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively manage projects. To
ensure strong project management skills in the company, CLT can invest in training and
development programs for their employees, provide opportunities for job shadowing, and
offer mentorship programs to help employees develop their skills.

2. What kind of criteria would you develop for Monica to use to measure whether
Stewart (or any other potential manager) is ready for project management
responsibility?

- To measure whether Stewart, or any other potential project manager, is ready for project
management responsibility, Monica can use a set of criteria to evaluate their readiness.
Some of these criteria can include their performance on previous projects, their ability to
manage and motivate a team, their communication and problem-solving skills, and their
knowledge of project management tools and techniques. Monica can also assess their
leadership potential, adaptability, and ability to handle stress and pressure. By evaluating
these criteria, Monica can determine whether an employee is ready for project
management responsibility or needs additional training and development before taking on
such a role.

3. How would you structure the job for new project managers to ensure or at least
increase the possibility of a high level of success?

Defining Project Manager

The project manager is a crucial component of the majority of projects because they are highly
skilled responsible for keeping the project on timeline and within budget. In order to ensure that
everyone is aware of expectations and can learn more about how a project is progressing, project
managers serve as the liaison between project team members and project stakeholders which
communicate with both groups regularly.

Project Manager's Qualifications

• A bachelor's degree in business management, computer science, IT, or a linked

profession.
• Any relevant project management-related experience.
• A Project Management Professional (PMP) credential is preferred.

Project Manager's Skills

Project managers have a variety of hard and soft competencies. They should have the
following abilities:
• Adaptability
• Decision-making
• Budgeting
• Industry Knowledge
• Interpersonal Skills
• Leadership
• Problem-Solving
• Risk Assessment
• Time Management

Project Manager's Responsibilities

• Establishing a timeline and different deadlines based on the requirements of the project
and the desires of the stakeholders
• Recruitment and hiring of personnel for the project
• Keeping company and project partners informed on a regular basis
• Examining the budget to make sure the project isn't consuming more resources than
planned
• Assigning assignments to members according to their position in the organization and
their skills and capabilities
• Obtaining resources for the members of the project team to fulfill their obligations

- A successful project manager is one who meets the requirements/qualifications, has

extensive experience managing work related to project management or other relevant
disciplines, possesses skills that will be beneficial to the success of the company and also,
for his/her growth as individual, responsible for undertaking the job, and willing to take on
challenging tasks and obligations.
4. If you were Monica, what kind of advice would you give Stewart about managing his
career and attaining his immediate goal of becoming a project manager?

- When an individual accepts a job as a project manager, in addition to having a prepared

mind and body and project management-related skills and experiences, there are other
considerations that must be made such as:

• Be effective in your team's communications.

• Examine the project specifics in detail.
• Recognize the desired outcomes.
• Consult a mentor for advice
• Actively engage clients
• Research project for management tools
• Be adaptable to changes
• Use your ability to think critically and solve problems.
• Work together with your staff/members
• Goals should be precise, measurable, and obvious.
• Set time to concentrate
• Assign duties as necessary
• Make a weekly agenda you can stick to.
• Having a complete documentation

CONCLUSION
In terms of responsibilities, Stewart has proved many times how effective he is as a leader and a
system analyst. He is indeed an employee who strives harder for success not just of his own but of
the entire company as well. Though, it is still a challenge for him to be a project manager because
he needs to give up such a few things in order to focus on achieving the goals and objectives of
the company as a project manager.

If Monica finally decided to step up Stewart’s career as a project manager, Stewart would
be more likely to be liable and in charge from the beginning up to the end of a project. The project's
scope, staff, and resources are all planned for, carried out, and managed by the project manager.
Project managers need discipline in order to set up clear, attainable goals and see them through to
completion. The assigned project must be completed entirely under the project manager's
supervision. Project managers are one of the vital parts for having a successful and effective system
that helps the Custom Load Trucking achieve their goals. In addition, in order for Monica to attain
her goal in checking and assessing if Stewart has the capacity to be the project manager she will
need to observe the things that need to change and things to improve in order for Stewart to become
an effective and efficient project manager. In that way the company will ensure its project
completion with skilled project managers.
Both project planning and project management are the responsibility of a project manager.
The project manager does not only see the entirety of the project but its risk management as well.
Stewart may have a lot to gain as a project manager, but he will surely need a lot more knowledge
and skills in order to be an effective one. With the help of Monica and her expertise, there is no
doubt that CLT will gain more operational success and more talented employees will be given a
chance to improve and advance their career.
