The advertisement showcases a simple, illustrative depiction of Facebook’s

services. The people in the main, bigger picture are taken as examples of people
connecting online to “SHARE” experiences as seen in the bottom illustrations.
A striking feature of the advertisement is the subheading being able to form an
acronym of SMS TEAM-UP, which directly refers to the services Facebook
provides, and shows the value that Facebook’s services held at the time the
advertisement came out through strong descriptive terms, “miraculous,” and
“striking”. The heading saying “Facebook” utilises the 1990’s style fonts for
display, usually on television, combined with its iconic blue shade, which
makes it quite attractive on display. The advertisement also utilises the
Facebook logo’s blue to highlight the medium through which the woman can
connect to the man (the computer), but also the two-sided arrow between them
in the bottom illustrations. The presence of vibrant+ colours is only visible in
certain aspects meant to be highlighted: the arrow in the bottom illustration and
the entire computer set including the display is coloured in various shades of
blue again utilising the commodity of the colour blue in Facebook to highlight
its significance as an online connector between two or more people.

The advertisement shows Facebook’s vision created as a result of its services,

through a future shown as a more polished version of today not just through the
displayed furniture (the chair, table, and plant holder), and technology (a
computer set of a different shape), but also the woman’s joyful expression
showing the satisfaction that its customers will gain by online messaging on
Facebook. Her expression can also suggest a juxtaposition between the colour
blue symbolising sadness and her expression being joyous, suggesting the
absence of sadness when using Facebook though its main colour persuades
sadness. The setting of a home consisting of this organised room also persuades
a relaxed mood while using Facebook to the reader, as cleanliness creates an
environment fit for free mental stimulation.

This advertisement suggests that technological culture is evolving at a rapid

rate. This idea is suggested by the juxtaposition of the overall visual theme - the
main colour is the same as old printed papers - to the illustration of a futuristic
view of life and technology. This is added to by the descriptive paragraph
mentioning Facebook as the “next look,” and that it makes “eloquent
economical (...) our times” - this sentence explicitly states that the futuristic
illustration is a “modern example of communication” though such a vision is yet
to be reality, suggesting that the vision will become reality in so less time, that it
will be considered as recent.

In conclusion, the advertisement portrays Facebook’s vision through clear,

simple illustrations, and speech. It also adds to the overall message of
technological evolution and its rapidity, by becoming a representative of the
future, as seen in the advert. Its simplicity gave way for it to become a
straightforward depiction of Facebook and its services, making it arguably a
fantastic representative advertisement.
